Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim

That trailer is much more effective than the earlier one. I've seen Del Toro talk about how he really wanted to give a sense of scale and this new trailer gives a much stronger sense or how massive the machines and monsters are.

Agreed. I was completely underwhelmed with the previous trailer but this one has really perked me up. Love that shot of the second Kajui leaping out of the water to attack one of the robots fighting his pal.

Looks great. But why are there 2 drivers? That bit looks weird.

I'd guess that they're going to say that one brain can't handle it, so they need two together. Towards the end of the film Idris Elba will heroically pilot one alone to save everyone, which will give him an aneurism.

It's a film that's supposed to make you feel like a kid again, but can the opposite effect if you find yourself somehow totally disinterested in it, it makes you feel old and dead inside.

I think that's what people can also mean when they say 'it looks like a videogame'.

Worked for me at 42 years old. So excited I've gone out and bought the Gundam Origin manga and a couple of Tau XV88 Broadside kits for Warhammer 40,000 to tide me over until the film comes out.

And Del Toro knew this. Before the clips got going, the director appeared in a Sorry I Can’t Be There video, explaining how he had personally chosen these particular scenes to flesh out our ideas of what Pacific Rim is really about, and to reveal how it will really look and feel. Del Toro knew he was going to turn us into ambassadors for the film, people who could pass on word that while the film was going to deliver on all of the apocalyptic action in the trailers, the content and quality certainly don’t stop there.

And having seen what I did, I’m happy to oblige. I won’t know if they’ve really pulled it off fully until I see the whole film, but for now, I’m more excited about Pacific Rim than anything else the studios have set for summer release.

Hellboy 2 and Blade 2 are pretty much amazing visual entertainment in spades. This on the other hand, actually looks pretty bad. I really hope it's not, as he's like a more intelligent version of the Buffy guy.

If its a success he can make the sweet horror film he's wanted to make for ever.

The embargo for this may be up. /Film got permission from Del Toro to share their views. Might only be reaction stuff again, rather than a full review. All these are from Peter Sciretta's Twitter Feed -

I’m allowed to tell you GDT showed me #PacificRim, and it is as awesome as you were hoping it would be. :)

Its the closest thing to a live action anime. some sequences look unlike anything you’ve seen before, over saturated neon. #PacificRim

#PacificRim: The action is insane, and feels huge and heavy. Biggest surprise is the humor. Ron Pearlman steals his scenes.

#PacificRim: Charlie Day’s performance is like 75% Rick Moranis from Ghostbusters and 25% Doc Brown.

#PacificRim: @travisbeacham’s script is filled to the brim with mythology which makes the world feel real and expansive.
