GameCube nearly catching up to PS2 in US

Everytime the GC gets a big game the sales increase massively. Now if only Nintendo can get more than one decent release every 6 months they might be competiting

Can't wait for their next console though. They've learnt a lot since the 16 bit days!

The only problem with the GameCube selling more than the Playstation 2 is that all the Nintendo fanboys would explode when they suddenly become the mass-market. Although I would take a certain pleasure in watching this happen I don't think I could be bothered cleaning up afterwards.

You're missing the bigger picture :

I would be delighted if Nintendo were popular again.

every time in a game store I hear a blatant OPSM2-style rant, I want to smash the offender's face in with an iron.

Wouldn't those figures put the cube in clear number 2 spot? Less than a million behinf th xbox in the states, god knows how far out in front in Japan and slightly behind in Europe. I may be wrong, but to me the cube looks to be in the number 2 slot depsite its pasting by the press and people alike...

Whatever their new machine is called, I hope they actually call it the Nintendo Megaton.

It's going to be that Cubeboy though, really...

Brilliant.

I stood in the queue listening to one of them telling this guy that MoH:RS was the best thing since sliced bread.

Then the guy infront of me got to the head of the queue and he said he had heard that a game called Viewtiful Joe was good and was it on the Playstation2?

The guy behind the counter said 'Beautiful what?' Not heard of that one.'

Yeah, things like this irritate the shit out of me. I was touch and go whether or not to buy 'The Thing' a little while ago in Game. The assistant said that it was amazing. I naively believed him. It went back the next day.

If I hear a customer being spouted rubbish, I usually pull them to one side after the assistant has gone and tell them the facts.

I just wish that gamers in the Uk would appreciate the cube more too. As a market, the UK is far more prone to buy into hype rather than quality. Mind you it would help if NOE were to provide some (any) hype!

More than the US?

I think a lot of this has to do with marketing and Nintendo having more serious third party support in the US. PoP GC coming out at the same time as the PS2 version, for example.

I like my GameCube, but I couldn't give a fucking fuck how many they've sold in comparison to the other two consoles.

You should do, because less sales = less developer support.

I see your point and I agree to some extent, but conversely when the next great comes out I don't really care which format I buy it on as long as it's fun. In fact, if anything, I'd rather it came out on XBox as I like the controller a bit better.

Maybe I should revise my original statement to:

I like my GameCube, and I do care about developer support, but I don't care quite enough to be analysing sales figures every week.

I suppose thinking about it there are advantages and disadvantages to each console. To me it looks like this (this is not an exhaustive list, just shows my thoughts on the consoles):

XBox:

Pros:

Good graphics (sometimes the best)

Live support is the best online solution

I like the controller best

Hard drive

MP3 jukebox

KOTOR, Splinter Cell (w/downloadables)

Cons:

Huge and ugly

EA online thing

GC:

Pros:

Looks very nice

Good graphics (sometimes the best)

Nicer controller than PS2, not as nice as XB (IMHO!)

Some kind of "cool factor"

Zelda, MP, FZGX

Cons

Online is a non-starter

I'm not so keen on some of the Ninty franchises (doesn't count as a con really)

Can't play music or DVDs

PS2:

Pros:

Looks quite stylish I suppose

DVD player out of the box

Grand Theft Auto (yeah I know), Gran Turismo

Online support is OKish, only use it for SSX3

Cons:

Technically bettered by the other 2

Don't count the pros and cons, it's pointless. To me the above list makes them all equal, although it is probably telling that I have twice as many games on both XB and PS2 than I do on GC.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Sorry.

As someone who has lived in the US for almost 5 years after living in the UK for many many years let me answer this: YES!!!

The UK is way more driven by hype/fashion than the US is. Don't get an impression of the US based on experience of internet based fanboy idiots. In reality people in the US are far more likely to have the opinion "$99 for a Gamecube - thats a great deal I should buy one" than the UK's common opinion "my mate Barry sez it's shit so I'm buying a PS2".

That's precisely the feeling I get to speaking to the 12 to 16 year old kids that live up our street. They want or get given PS2's because their friend's have them or get given Xboxes because their Dad thinks its best for them. Not one of them is particularly driven by the choice of games (GTA excepting) so long as FIFA, The Hulk, Spider Man, Enter The Matrix and MoH are on the machine. Nintendo have an extremely difficult job in the UK to penetrate the mindset of these kids (even though virtually all of the games they want are also on the GC).

Going with this point - I've noticed in the run up to Xmas in the US NOA have obviously been doing something to counter this in the US by running ads for a lot of non-exclusive games (e.g. THUG, PoP, Soul Calibur) and having "Gamecube" logo prominent at the end of the ad.

Clearly their message is "yes - these games you want are on the Gamecube", something it sounds like NOE could learn from.

Yeah Nintendo have never been 'fashionable' in the UK and never will, as far as I can see.

When you'e in places like Game all you hear is townies/kids saying how 'wicked' PS2 is. gameCube is either just 'shit' or 'for babies'. That sort of thing.

It's a shame BUT so long as Nintendo keep releasing the games, even if they do this infuriatingly slowly, I don't mind too much.

NOE have started doing that over here as well I notice with the TV ads for the new EA Lord Of The Rings game.

What like at the end of every EA advert just now? I've noticed the Gamecube logo come up on everyone of those now.
