Let's start the madness...

Well, I did say at the start of the thread that his article was interesting and could do with some further discussion.

It reminded of one of the most annoying things in Splinter Cell. Why, when faced with a guard does Sam elbow them in a slow and clumsy fashion? Why not just punch them in the face, kick em in the nads or something else much quicker and snappier rather than standing there like a lemon getting shot to ribbons? Hmm?

So, for those of us still without our subs copies, what was his article about? Not about kicking guards in their privates I guess?

My favourite bit from the column (which pretty much gives the flavour of it):

"The average adult occasional gamer is simply not willing to put in the time and effort required to memorise one arbitrary videogame system. And why should he?

It's different when you're 12, but when you're grown up there are all sorts of interesting things you could be learning instead. Personally I would like to memorise more French words, and various lines of the Sozin-Velimirovic attack in the Sicilian Defence. You might want to memorise a Linkin Park guitar riff, or some Shakespeare soliloquies. Whatever."

Then he's got a point.

It's about realism, and why it's got so much appeal to non-gamers, then?

Okay, so that quote didn't really give a helpful flavour of the column. It's more about a game giving you a fun experience and how an inadequate system (he cites lack of stealth moves in Hidden & Dangerous 2 as an example) doesn't compel you to play it, rather, do something else. The title is 'Videogames? Sometimes I'd rather play chess'.

Then he's got a point.

I agree.

Re. the Manhunt thang:

Yes, the first 5 or 6 levels are rather tedious and consist solely of hide in shadow, wait for bad dude to turn his back on you, walk up and execute, repeat...

BUT

...once you get to the mall and get some handguns, the game starts becoming really frickin' tense and brilliant and basically turns into a playable John Carpenter movie. I was completely unimpressed at first but the atmosphere kept me (just) interested enough to persevere and it does become ace, with some of the best gunfights/battles in gaming ever. Plus Brian Cox is frickin' fabulous in it.

But yeah, it means sticking it out for several levels of dullness first, if you can be bothered...

Cheers for that, Ulala - I was getting a bit bored of Manhunt and was about to jump into the thread screaming, "A fucking 8 outta 10?!! Bollocks!".

Thing is, I've only got as far as that bit where you're dropping the fridge on scumbag's heads.

You've just convinced me to keep playing. Cheers! :)

Ha, that was where I was closest to quitting too - I frickin' hated that bit with a passion and the fact the save before the second one is so badly positioned so you might have to spend 5-10 minutes faffing about just to get back to the sodding crane again. It really is the nadir though and thereon is where it gets good. Strapped For Cash is evil, in a good way, then comes the mall...

But honestly, the guns are soooo satisfying. Sure, hundreds of games have shotguns but few other ones feel so right, as you hide round the corner and a bunch of SWAT-style guys come charging down the corridor in a well observed cover formation. They get closer to your position...they're almost at the corner...you swing round and take out the bastard on point with a point blank blast to the chest, then spin back to cover while they frantically scatter behind filing cabinets and boxes. Game on.

The Counter Strike score is to high. I bought this game when it came out and was really excited about it. Imagine my disapointment. It really is (in no way) better than Rainbow 6 3. Its a badly animated, shallow, muliplayer shooter.

Counter-Strike is an arcade multiplayer shooter with a terrorist-counter terrorist theme. Rainbow Six 3 is a (flawed) attempt at creating a semi realistic terrorist-counter terrorist game. While it's natural to compare the two, it's not fair to either game.

(For the record, I felt that the RS3 review was spot on.)

Hehehehe, mine came this morning, they do have a sense of humour! I love the 'Mainstream' Christmas style writing on the front, and bundling in OPSM2? Genius! It's either intentional or an unintentionally hilarious bonus. Haven't opened it up yet though as I have to go to work now

This month's Redeye column would really mess someone up who was new to the magazine, they'd wouldn't know he is being hilariously (okay, 'quite funnily') ironic.

While I appreciate that RedEye was being ironic I still found it one of his worst columns to date. It was horribly patronising (I think that is the right word) the whole way through and the only redeeming feature was the last paragraph.

I'm fast becoming sold on this Manhunt...

Brian Cox is in it, yes? Did they get him because of the Title association with Manhunter?

More likely just because he's very good at being an evil bastard.

I would especially recommend it if you have a headset - I don't myself but from what I've been able to gather, all Cox's speech is screamed directly in your ear instead of through the TV for that true feeling of being there and if you talk/cough/sneeze while a hunter is near, he will hear you and investigate.

People with flu need not apply.

I loved the headset idea, totally inspired. I am going to have to get one and try this game again some day. But it's just so dull ...

HUNGRY HORACE (G13/R)

19?? Beam Software

Horace is forever being chased around the park by guards.

He steals their lunch, eats pathway flowers and creates chaos in the park by ringing the alarm!

You'll have to be quick to keep Horace out of trouble!

I blame being young on my woefull memory. :(
