I'm holding off for some newbie feedback. The demo really put me off, felt like it was a very unforgiving hardcore shooter which isn't really my thing. That and I didn't have a clue what was going on during the demo matches!

It probably does but my PC is in the attic, with a pull down ladder and a baby sleeping below. So its gotta be 360 for me, living room, turtle beaches, sounds set to 'war tapes' and my buddies doing the same. They have mostly moved from PC to xbox gaming.

Short of someone sending you a message after the game to gloat (which happens, but rarely), then there is very little asshattery to put up with in Battlefield on the 360 at least. I don't if you can taunt the other team via text chat on the PC or what, but in general Battlefield's got big enough teams and maps that you can do your own thing without worrying too much what some douchenozzle might think of you. Unless you play slayer, but then you'd be doing it very wrong anyway.
