Edge - Do they think I'm Stupid?

After my current sub runs out I'm not going to bother to renew it. Pretty much all the reviews appear on the web now (usually before the mag itself has been published) and I plan to download iPad copies on the App Store if the articles in an issue look particularly interesting.

I received an email from the Future Publishing "Customer Service" folks this morning:

Dear Mr G,

Blah, blah blah, costs going up, blah, blah, blah

Edge Subscription will now be £43:69

Wow, another increase. That's brave of them right now. Let me just check...

Yep, sure enough if I go to the www.myfavouritemagazine.co.uk website they are offering exactly the same thing on there for £38:99.

Maybe the web site (being 3rd party) just hasn't got the updated price on yet?

EDIT: No, I am an idiot - it is the Future official site! Bit of an ego stroke they're calling themselves that!

Maybe you should call up and ask if they can do you a deal. I really, really wanted the BBC Archimedes t-shirt that was the subs gift a while back, but I was already a subscriber. I called up, and they just sent me one in the post so I think they try to satisfy customers.

Got the same email. Cancelled this morning - annoying that you can't cancel from the site. Also, they tell you to remove the direct debit from your bank account, so it's obvious that they'll just process it anyway unless you stop the payment manually. Shady.

I never get a chance to read the mag anyway - I'm always surprised when the new one arrives as I think it's only a week since I got the previous one. Waste of money.

That's what I'm doing. Works well.

What are you lot whining about? I pay about £63 every year, living in the Netherlands :quote:

Are they still terrible with posting times? I often didn't receive my copy until 10 days after people in the UK already had theirs. While I paid something crazy like a 50% premium for postage. At the same time, Amazon can deliver stuff to my door in 2-3 days. For free.

Yeah, I've cancelled all my magazines except Tap now, and that'll probably go given the fact I just found 3 unopened issues clearing out my desk.

Used to sub to 360 (but then it went every 3 weeks and there were too many of them) and Retro Gamer (but I found it became largely repeats, things written by readers and things I just wasn't interested in).

Should just have taken out the 2 year option they were offering a while back, £30/year, not via DD, sorted. This month's issue is surprisingly hefty, only ~22 pages devoted to reviews, and about the same near the end devoted to region-specific, not bad for the money compared to the barrel scraping the single format mags seem to have to resort to these days.

Are they still doing that Region-Specific feature? Geez. What a complete waste of space. It's the most boring part of the mag by far, and as far as I can see is only in the mag primarily so they can get the featured companies to pay for ads in the same section.

Well as those pages are on-top of the normal content, I don't see much reason to complain as you can take it or leave it and it doesn't affect the part of the magazine you do pay for usually, and it's about the only way I'll ever see publicity for those particular dev companies as the usual places online are unlikely to devote bandwidth to covering the industry in any depth.

I thought Focus Home Interactive were British up until now  , a very un-French name.

I think it's the disappointment of getting an new issue, thinking "Crikey, look how think it is this month, can't wait to read all those review, previews and articles!" then coming to the dawning realisation the bulk is because there's 30 pages on the games scene Bedfordshire.
