We finished Schitt's Creek last night, including the making of\ back patting episode. We loved it! Probably the best sitcom since Parks and Rec, it was really refreshing to watch something that was well spirited. Great characters, performances and writing for all six seasons.

When does this get good? We didn't make it through more than 2 episodes bit I'm well aware that sitcoms sometimes take a while to find their feet.

At first I didn't think it would be possible to warm to the characters, but a few episodes in you start to see their good side coming through and the series begins to shine. Can't remember the exact point we 'got it' but it didn't take long.

The new Unsolved Mysteries is a serious vibe for those of us who can’t get enough nicely shot whispery crime. There’s the usual shady doings and a transpirings, then out of nowhere you get a very compelling alien abduction episode. My only criticism is that it doesn’t throw it back to Robert in a bustling control centre or a floodlit airstrip between each story.

Yeah, it’s not incredible but there’s enough intrigue in each case to make it worth while. I agree with you, the gap seemed eminently jumpable to me. Flip flops are like slippers, if you’re motivated enough then you can get some pace in them.

Yeah, we made three it episodes in and couldn't be fucked any more.

Same with Modern Family.

In other news, Warrior Nun can fuck right off.

A cool premise turned into meandering pish, with an ending that'll have you throwing shit at the TV.

We loved Modern Family from the first episode! We are currently watching New Girl. It's not amazing or anything but it's fairly watchable when we just want something light and 23 minutes long.

I watched the first one which was the least mysterious mystery ever. The dude jumped.

 Does it get better?

I dunno. Seemed suspicious enough to warrant telling the story. Even if you think it's suicide there wasn't a logical case for why he jumped and why he wouldn't leave a note. The fact that the company and his best friend weren't talking was odd.

Unsolved mysteries ep 1 has 2 mysteries for the price of one: the flip flop faller and also how the man in charge of building maintenance for the Belvedere didn’t spot a hole in the roof and a corpse for 6 days.

I thought it was mysterious enough. I was looking up how far you can realistically jump from a rooftop. This is from a parkour website:

"Assess the situation. Gauge how far the building is from where you are standing. The maximum distance most people can jump, even with a running start, is about 10 feet. If the roof you’re jumping onto is lower than the one you’re leaping from, you might be able to go a couple feet more because of the added momentum."

The high roof was about 40 feet away from the hole. The lower car park roof was 20 feet away. As the cop said, it just doesn't add up that he jumped and went through that hole.

In any case the business 'friend' he worked for seemed well shady.

I hope this Netflix series throws up some new information.

I did the other day. It absolutely does. Although...

Spoiler

I always remember being disappointed that he didn't give his "best friend" a good earful before he goes.

I've seen half a dozen facebook posts and tweets this morning from friends commenting on The Truman Show. Has it just been added to Netflix or something?

Yep. I talked about it in the "Rate the last film you watched" thread. It's still fantastic.

EDIT: They've also added Mission Impossible Fallout, the best of the MI movies in my opinion (waits for someone to say the first is the best because it's a smarter movie).

The 1st is the best because they seem like they might be undercover  as opposed the Ethan motorbike chase support group on tour.

Also it's the sma....

Sorry, something else occurred to me, Fallout is a decent enough action movie and the fight in the toilets is great but the central chase is dragged out too long, saw casino Royale again  a day later and it just seemed a much tighter and better movie action wise, the chases are actually shorter and better for it.  Don't know if MI attempting to go bigger at every iteration is to the benefit of the franchise.

Unsolved Mysteries is brilliant.

Only watched the first 3 eps, but so far they are more like "unsolved" mysteries, in that it's obvious who the murderer is the cops just weren't willing or able to pin them for it.

Ep2 takes a real turn towards the end:

  Hide contents

Early on I thought "the husband is being up front about this, I don't think he did it" and then it goes from 0-60 where he's smooching with her skull and fondling a bag of her ashes and talking about how her remains are his prized possession. Lock him up now FFS.

Re the husband:

Spoiler

I agree that him cuddling some ashes in a box was creepy but it didn't make me think he was the obvious murderer. If he did kill his own wife it would be a bit daft to admit all that stuff to camera. It actually made me think he was genuinely bereft.

To be honest, the second episode was quite dull and that bit was the only part which stopped me focusing on Picross. I thought it was much more likely that it was one of the later imprisoned serial killers operating in the area at the time.

But the 1st also has Jon Voight in it so it's also the best and worst.

Just to add to the Schitt’s Creek talk, I also thought I would hate the vast majority of the characters at first.

I’m glad I stuck with it. Catherine O’Hara is amazing in pretty much everything she does, but at first I thought the voice she was putting on was going to irritate me immensely.  Now that I’m further in, some of her intonation in this slays me.

And David is just amazing. Such an excellent character.

We’ve just started S2 and are likely to race through the rest.

Floor Is Lava is some silly fun if you like Wipeout or Finders Keepers or physical shows like that. Keeps it mostly tight on the obstacle coursing itself rather than other fluff.

Needs more Pat Sharp and screaming audience of kids, though.

This bugs me a bit. people no longer seek out good films do they, they just watch whats put in front of them by Netflix.

Well, I'm sure a lot of us on here do. When I mention at work some of the films I've watched, I usually get sideways glances and a "Where the hell do you find out about these films?" Actually, I think I've probably just proved your point.

If you liked this (we did!) then Ultimate Beastmaster offers more of the same straightforward style of entertainment. Lots of people falling off stuff into water, it’s basically a genre to itself at this point. There’s a Great Britain version of one of the Beastmaster series which replaces the over-excitable Yank commentators with, well, over-excitable Brits.

Unsolved Mysteries is an utter drag. Falls foul of the Netflix kryptonite - too much bloat. A 30 minute programme stretched into a 50 minute episode.

The first two cases, whilst tragic, really aren't very interesting. There's so many decent examples of true crime programming out there, this really isn't one of them.

The Floor is Lava however, is great family fun. Even better when cocksure contestants faceplant into an Easter Island head located in a bright red swimming pool.
