Too late. Good lord it was bad, it was poor until the end, but the end was somehow even worse. Just started a six month free trial of Apple TV+ (PS5 owners!  Download the app, the promo ends 22nd July), so will rinse that before thinking about going back.  I also have an Apple 3 month trial from my new iPad that didn’t activate.

You don't seem to be able to use multiple trials.  I got a 1 year free sub with my iPad, and then my LG tv had a three month offer, but it wouldn't let me apply the 3 months from the TV after my iPad 1 year free ended, even though it wasn't in the T&Cs anywhere I could see.

"Brilliant attorney Woo Young-woo tackles challenges in the courtroom and beyond as a newbie at a top law firm and a woman on the autism spectrum." It's been a wonderful warm-hearted, feel good show so far.

It seems to assume that a cartoon with swearing and meta references is automatically funny, but it could not be more wrong. It might be the worst thing I've seen on Netflix, and that's saying something.

This just confirms my theory that anything Netflix recommend in their ‘we just added a film you might like’ is guaranteed to be crap and something I’d hate.

I watched the first couple of that anime series bastard as netflix recommended it.  Its like you took the worst bits of many animes put them together and then let netflix slash the budget.  It's bloody awful, like a lot of netflix at the moment. 

 

I cant see the new direction of slash production budgets and increase subscription costs working for them.

Late 80s/90s anime was generally excessive as a product of its time, but usually actually had some artistry to it.

 

The anime series described above is absolute hot garbage. I checked it out out of curiosity and it's bad, and gets worse.

 

It's treatment of sexual assault is unbelievably crass and infantile. Even in early exploitative 80s anime it tended to be gross but assumed the viewer was an adult. I have no idea who this new series is aimed at, as it's presumably for adults but it's been written and drawn by teenagers.

 

You could argue that's the whole point, but it's just unbelievably shit anyway. A genuine turd.

 

The most successful attempt at the more shocking adult style of anime Netflix have done in the past was Devilman Crybaby. That contained a lot of shocking and sometimes very questionable shit, but it was leagues ahead of the above effort.

There’s a cracking 45 minute doc on Netflix at the moment called Nordfor Sola, which is about two Norwegian surfers who go and live through winter in a bay off the Arctic Circle to surf, live off waste and tidy up the rubbish that washes ashore. Perfect viewing in this heat!

There’s a decent doc about the life of Anthony Bourdain on Netflix at the moment, called Roadrunner. I’ve only ever read Kitchen Confidential, not seen any of his shows and it’s mainly about that for obvious reasons but seems like a pretty unsparing examination of his life through the eyes of his friends, with loads of great footage.

I watched the sprigan series after it was mentioned above.  I have a soft spot for the film as I think the animation is decent although it's half a story.  The series is just a collection of short non interconnecting stories of which I'd say 3 are okay and 3 are pretty poor.  One is primarily the film as a series episode.  A decent chunk is cgi rather than hand drawn and the cgi at points looks very marionette like.  

 

Overall its bang average so if you really like it you'll get something from it but it's not worth looking at if you've no history or reason to.

The Sea Beast is really good if anyone's in the mood for a family film that's equally appealing for parents and kids. It's clearly a massive labour of love for the director given the attention to detail on the sailing sequences and the full-on nautical jargon and terminology. The opening sequence in particular, where a crew of monster hunters fight a gigantic sea creature, seems to have been the driver for the whole film because it never quite recaptures the sheer intensity of that bit - I get the sense the director and his team put a lot of love into that bit. It's absolutely spectacular.

 

The rest of the film is pretty good too. The setup is very similar to Moana, and while it's not as good as that film, it's pretty interesting in its own right. It might be a bit intense in places for very young kids and it's possibly a bit long at two hours, but the performances are great, it's funny, there are some good messages for kids (especially the anti-monarchist bit), and it's visually very striking. The aesthetic is a mix of realistic environments, exaggerated character designs that remind me of Dishonored, and almost cartoonish monster designs - it's an odd mix, but it works. If the monsters were too realistic, it would probably be a bit much for young kids, but as it is, it's quite charming.
