It wore the themes of child abuse and folklore pretty uncomfortably and didn’t do much with either - felt a bit appropriated. 

 Yeah, I thought it had some nice moments and was quite pretty but ultimately everything they added to the short story made it worse, particularly in relation to the cultural appropriation...

Unless my memory is completely shot, I don't think it had anything to do with Native American folklore in the story, and the nature of what the dad and younger brother had become was way better than what they went with.

Yep was worried this was going to be Trueblood: Down Under or Anne Rice in Australia or something but nope it seems decent and looks to have a cool backstory etc. Hoping it might tap into a similar vibe to John Carpenter’s Vampires, which while not great has a lovely atmosphere and general aesthetic (that the rest of the film sort of wasted).

Anyone watch the TV show Evil? It's from Robert and Michelle King who made The Good Wife and a few other shows. 

 

It's about a psychologist who works with a Catholic priest in training to investigate possible possessions, demonic hauntings etc. The 3rd part of the team is their tech guy who looks for IT explanations for their cases. 

 

I've watched 6 of the first season, there's 2 seasons out, and it's pretty good. The tone is all over the place - there's knockabout jokes one minute and possible child murders the next. But it's legit scary in places and despite the 'monster of the week' format there's enough arc to keep it interesting. And Catholic imagery is always good horror fare.

Thanks for the recommendation. I binged both seasons this weekend and I bloody loved it.😁 It's weirdly transgressive for what is on the surface a standard network procedural with supernatural overtones.  I'm all in on season 3 later this year.

Have any of you watched Be My Cat?  Adrian Țofei's depiction of a nutcase obsessed with Anne Hathaway is about as chilling as it gets.

 

Several of you mentioned Midnight Mass (something I enjoyed greatly), I would also recommend season 1 of The Terror which is set in the 1800s about two ships stranded in the Arctic who have to contend not only with the harshest environment on the planet, but also with brutal and deadly attacks from something else out there with them.  A great cast, superbly acted and a decent blend of drama and horror in good measure.   

 

I did start season 2 but lost interest in the new storyline after about three episodes, but I would wholeheartedly recommend season 1.

Tonight I watched an Argentinian film called The History of The Occult after it appeared on a few 'best horror films of 2021' lists. I rarely have to google '..ending explained' but this one defeated me. It was hypnotic and captivating though.

 

It's set in 1980, filmed in black and white and in a 4:3 ratio. It's the last episode of a popular current affairs television show, 60 Minutes to Midnight, and for their last broadcast they're going to expose a link between the government and *something* supernatural. 

This starts off in a fairly conventional fashion - TV host interviews occult expert and a guy who claims to be a Warlock - then takes a MASSIVE swerve into totally wild territory. 

 

It looks great - glossy black and white mixed with TV broadcast type pictures and occasionally breaking out of it's 4:3 ratio - the acting is good all round and the production design is quality. But the story is so esoteric that I was pretty lost for a lot of the short running time. And the ending left me totally baffled. 

 

I think this was on MUBI for a while but looks like it's gone now. Netflix have bought the rights so hopefully it appears there soon. I pirated it but will get it when it's out to buy.


I don't know if I'd recommend it or even what I'd score it. What a trip.

Anyone watching the new one on Netflix that went up yesterday, Archive 81? It does the same split time-period thing that Yellowjackets does with the story cutting between the 90's and now.

 

It's about a video achieve/restoration expert hired to restore a collection of fire-damaged video tapes. The tapes are a college project, interviews with the residents of an apartment building which subsequently burns down. For plot reasons the archivist has to do his work in an isolated mansion with no internet access and a barely working phone line. 

 

I watched the first one and it's OK. There's a lot happening in the contemporary bits and the flashback but there is enough focus on the story to keep it interesting. James Wan is involved and I think it's based on a Podcast. I'll watch a few more for sure.

Yeah, it is a fantastic look at the genre.

 

I have the Severin boxset here which includes that documentary along with twenty folk horror movies, a book, CD's and countless extras. It's a pretty extraordinary package that I really need to find the time to get started on beyond the doc.

Shipping was relatively speedy and I escaped customs charges which was a bonus as they had the potential to add a fair few quid to the already expensive set. IIRC they marked the value down substantially so that might have helped on that front. 

 

The only thing to consider is that the two discs of UK films are both Region A so you'll need a multi-region Blu Ray player.

It's only on Prime as part of a Shudder sub btw. 

 

Which means I can't watch it. But I'll be subbing soon so I can watch S3 of Creepshow.

Watched one tonight on Shudder called Superhost. It's about a couple who travel to remote Air BnB properties and make YouTube reviews. When they meet the host of their accommodation things quickly go south.

 

I thought this was lots of fun. It's all set in one location and there's only a handful of characters but they maximise the laughs and shocks. Gracie Gillam as the host is the breakout star but the others put in good shifts. It's only 85 minutes and definitely worth a watch.

Has anyone seen the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix?

 

I flicked through it earlier and while it didn't seem up to much, it didn't shy away from the gore. It's meant to be a direct sequel to original Tobe Hooper original and there are more than enough nods, including

John Laroquette doing the narration, and the final girl from the original movie, returning as a sort of Sarah Connor badass. 

 

It's barely 80 minutes, but does contain a scene on a bus that

could rival the recent Malignant's jail scene. There's also a number of splintered bones, heads smashed in etc, and a great final fuck you - which you know is coming, but was still quite well done.

 

 

Given how low on blood and gore the original was, this goes in the complete opposite direction. Even just skimming through, there's way too many 'about to get chainsawed to death but a character you thought was dead is really still alive' moments. Maybe watch a highlights reel on YT.

When I posted similar about Brand New Cherry Flavor earlier in the thread, someone pointed me towards the Channel Zero series that Nick Antosca did previously. We've watched 2 of 4 seasons now and they're really good, so I'm just passing along the same tip for anyone that missed it the first time.
