I am sitting here thinking about how they managed to do that real-time, in a single take (well it took 4 attempts overall so I read but still), its just mind-blowing to me and to top it off the acting was superb across the board, they didn't seem to miss a beat.

Soft and Quiet was good. LOTS of loose ends though, and was surprised when it ended.

I guess no on-screen repercussions for any of the group could set up a revenge horror sequel where the survivor goes around picking them all off. The deal she makes to model some "vintage clothes" is clearly going to be a load of old Nazi uniforms but would be interesting to see play out. Would like to see how they use the husband character in a sequel as well. 

 

Glad I didn't know anything about it before watching as the reveal of the pie was a perfect 10/10 moment.

I really wish I'd seen Mia Goth's utterly mesmeric performance in a cinema to be honest, one shot* in particular would have been incredible to watch alongside others.

...the end, with that held smile that cracks and wobbles the longer the camera holds her gaze. Imagine among a crowd it would have induced nervous laughter before giving way to stunned silence.

I thought it was ok as a film. I gasped at the early reveal but the rest felt a bit predictable. Technically it was brilliant, though.

My list of shit I'd never even heard of, let alone watched, has grown considerably. 

 

Last years box set from Severin, All The Haunts Be Ours, which includes that brilliant documentary, should be considered an essential folk horror buy.

It's very expensive and appears to have Region blocked discs in there.

It is definitely expensive but don't forget there are 20 films, a decent little book, and a couple of CDs. 

 

Yes, you'll need a multi Region blu ray player for the two discs of UK films but, even if you are unable to play those, there are more than enough wild, weird, and wonderful films in the package  (many of which have been very hard to come by until this amazingly curated box set) to help justify the outlay.

 

I'd say it is essential for anyone with even a passing interest in the genre.

Watched a new one on Shudder last night A Wounded Fawn. The set-up is pretty basic, a woman heads off to a remote cabin with a guy she just met and things quickly go south. There's a standard serial-killer vs. victim scenario for a bit then it takes a wild swerve and becomes something much more interesting.

 

It's hard to write much about this without ruining it but I had a blast with it. It was definitely made with a super-low budget but they do a lot with it and the few locations they have. There's some great, schlocky practical effects and impressive performances from the 2 leads. I know the last 20 minutes will be pretty divisive but I loved it.

Soft and Quiet felt like (yet another) movie where they confused "horror"  (a genre of film) with "horrible" (something that's upsetting or hard to watch), and I don't think these two words are interchaneable. You can't criticise the acting, the direction, the film-making... It's competent in all areas, but it's not enjoyable as horror because everyone involved has made a film that is horrible. 

 

Thinking of horror films I've enjoyed they tend to have a story, characters, a beginning, a middle and and end.  Sometimes you get humour mixed with the horror, sometimes there's gore.  Often you have a bad guy character, a Micheal Myers or Freddy Krueger.  A good twist at the end perhaps. Or someone dies in an especially gruesome way and you watch through your fingers but you get the thrill of a horror film.

 

Soft and Quiet has all these things. Yet there's something about the story that's missing. This film, and a number of others recently, seem to step away from the story arc .and just focus on showing you something really unpleasant.  S+Q was a really unpleasant film but all the pieces were in the right places. The setup was good , the pie was a great moment and everything up to the store built really well.  But from there it just seemed to be shoving a horrible situation at you, forcing you to sit through a deeply unpleasant series of events.  Somehow the point to the film wasn't about telling a horror story, it was about making something extremely unpleasant to sit through.  Torturing the audience.   I was very impressed by the structure, the setup, the film-making, the acting, it's technically brilliant. But I wouldn't want to see it again and it feels like I was the one being abused.  Horror films may be scary and horrible (it's in the name) but they recently seem to have moved on to be Jackass Style "can you watch this film without vomiting" viewer challenges, and I miss the story arc.  This film could be half an hour longer and do something at the end but they'd shown you all the horrible things by then and it ends.

Totally agree with your view on Skinamarink. Waste of time. It's movie student project stuff. No idea why there is a buzz around it tbh.

I still am annoyed at Fawn some days after watching it.  It feels like I have been robbed of a potentially great horror movie, and I am not happy!   This, off the back of Satans Slaves 2 which had just about everything needed to end up being an excellent horror movie, yet I found it to be just so terminally dull that I needed to have multiple breaks just to get through its overlong runtime.

Skinamarink was utter torture.  Sometimes I hate this thing I have that no matter how little I enjoy a horror movie, I feel compelled to watch it to completion.  I blame most of that on my Letterboxd account.  And to think I chose to watch this instead of The Invisible Maniac (1990) which also looks terrible, but is sure to be more interesting than this.
