What I want most from Day Z is people on comms to stop calling me Sponge.

Heh, do you reckon if we swap our Mumble names people would still get it wrong?

"Spork is that you over there?"

"..."

"Spork?"

"..."

"Spork?"

"Do you mean Sponge?"

"Oh shit, ha, yeah sorry"

With the Bohemia humble bundle being so cheap I caved and have spent the last couple of hours playing DayZ Mod (after a bit of a faff with Steam saying serials numbers and other bits and bobs were missing).

My first couple lives weren't much to write home about. Killed a couple of zombies, got used to the controls, had a bit of an explore of Elektro (I think...), fell off things - the usual. My third life though is going pretty swell. I spawned really close to this other survivor who was having a bit of to-do with a couple of walkers so I chimed in and axed them down. He thanked me with a can of beans before he got shot dead by a bandit! I get hit and just go prone hoping that he thinks he's knocked me unconscious and combat roll behind a hedge. The bandit comes charging in and starts pawing through his victim's belongings. I stand up, Axe ready, and just go to town on this bandit's face. Blood is gushing out of his head. He crumples in a heap, knocked out. I stand triumphantly over him. He wakes up. I shit myself, then deliver the killing blow. "Zach has been killed". The cayote pack is mine, 5 blood packs are mine, as are the bandages, your map and your Makarov. Some ammo would have been nice.

Things went downhill after that. I raided a barn and broke a leg so now I'm aimlessly crawling around some woodland looking for a big enough city with a hospital to get some morphine. Lots of fun! Will invest in a headset very soon, I think. :)

Sure thing!

1. Exit Steam then go to Start, type 'run' then type 'regedit'
2. Go to LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/
3 . There will be two folders we need to alter, Bohemia Interactive and Bohemia Interactive Studio
4. For both folders, right click

-> Go to permissions
-> Change the permissions to allow full control
5. Now open each of the folders and delete "ARMA 2 OA"
6. Exit
7. Start Steam

-> Go to your game library

-> Right click on ARMA 2, go to properties, local files, and then click 'verify integrity of game cache'

-> Do the same for Operation Arrowhead (and the beta)

-> Then finally do the same for DayZ Mod

Now when you start DayZ Mod with the Beta patch everything should work! Apologies if some of that sounds patronising or anything. I'm not much of a PC gamer so stuff like regedit was new and scary for me!

Just spent an hour getting to know Elektro. Found a makarov and three mags, a nice back pack, found the hospital and the shop and got tooled up. All was good until I tried to leave and got one shot killed by literally the first player I had seen all game. HE WASN'T EVEN WEARING A BANDIT SKIN! What a bastard. I was all set to go into the woods and make my way to Balota to scope out the military base. :(

Just had an epic session on DayZ Mod.

Having had my previous two lives tragically cut short by bandits I came into this life with a new outlook on shooting people with bandannas.

I resumed from my last play at Kamyshovo with nought but a 12 slot backpack and some beans and an empty water bottle to my name. Bummed around a bit there and picked up some food and drink from a shed. Feeling equipped enough, and with nothing to lose, I started my raid on Elektrozavodsk. I picked up a crowbar from the northern most fire station then investigated the two residential areas. In the apartments I found a Winchester and a Lee Enfield with ~100 ammo each! I took the LE and went in to the school and got some standard supplies from there and the shop (including a watch and some binoculars). In the shop I got mauled by a zombie and had to get the eff out of dodge. I called for help in the sidebar and this hero came and found me, bringing 40 zombies with him... He put a blood bag in my backpack then ran around while I, between fainting, chopped them down with my mighty crowbar of crushing! I patched myself up then more zombies came at us. Eventually, we dealt with it but not before my saviour got badly wounded. I blood-bagged him, said thanks, then left town via the central fire station, picking up an M9 as I did (which I now know is not compatible with Makarov rounds *sigh*). Saved in a tree in the woods above Elektro feeling like I can hold my own now - even if I am low on medical supplies! Won't chance Chernogorsk just yet but will check out some barns and maybe head to Balota. Could really do with a map or a GPS...

Love how this game creates its own stories through relatively standard player interactions.

played one of the most funniest and unnerving sessions tonight - and came accross a virtual serial killer in the process. was heading to meet a mate in Berezino. he was hold up in the office block at the lumber yard. by the time i got there the building was under siege by z'ds ive never seen so many ( have they increases the z count in the game?) they were outside and on the stair wells and floors. so i managed to get onto the roof were my mate is and he also there with a group of 4 other randomer's who had all ended up there on the roof to avoid the horde that was now surrounding the office block etc.. so as a group we decided to leg it down the ladder (first person fended off any attack while the rest came down.) one particular guy was very pleasant to the degree that we was giving off a creepy vibe. So the 6 of us head off still being chased by remnants of the horde. As we worked our way through the back allies etc... i noticed that one of the guys in the group had disappeared. so i asked had anyone seen him . polite guy "oh he is dead he wont becoming back - i saw him die" so we let it slip assuming that he had been killed by the chasing z'ds. so with peeps in the group need various things like water,, food we decided to scavenge around the local houses. my mate and i took one house and the other guys other houses. we met up and again are numbers were down by another player. so again i asked anyone seen were they went. Polite guy " oh i saw him run off". so we decided to scavenge some more places in the town again me and my mate sticking together, this time we waited and followed polite guy and other randomer. and low and behold when polite guy had the other guy alone out came his axe and he whacked the other player and started scavenging his corpse. We confront him and he started coming at us with his axe, all the time saying "its ok im your friend" 3 magnum shots later and he was a dead nut job on the ground. never trusting another randomer again!!

  • 2 weeks later...

New patch is live.

Includes hard hats, a children's backpack and the ability to pour water from one bottle to another.

There is also now a log out timer as well as a some sort of queue system which will hopefully mean less combat logging and server hopping.

Plus a new town.
