Hmm, CDPR are equal parts geniuses and fucking assclowns. If you turn off subtitles, and someone speaks in a language other than English, tough fucking luck.

I hate substitles unless I fucking need them. Looks like I'll have to leave them on for the entire game in case I miss an important piece of dialogue. Games should always have the option for non-native language subs.

The subtitles don’t translate languages your character doesn’t know though right? I think you get that translation with Cybermods. Sure I’ve read that somewhere.

Some impressions on a PC with a AMD 3900x and RTX3080-I was expecting the worst after reading people’s reactions but it’s running fine tbh. It’s not perfect don’t get me wrong with the main issue being the fluctuations in FPS more than anything. More often than not I’m above 60 though, a bit more optimisation wouldn’t go amiss though. Looks stunning in places too, especially the city. Character models on the main cast have been very good too. Although my character looks average in the inventory menu and doesn’t look great in photo mode either annoyingly. Probably my fault in the creator!

Only played the first couple of hours but I’m so invested already and can’t wait to fully jump in over the weekend.

Well I guess I've completed the prologue now.

Man I am looking forward to spending a LOT of time with this over the Christmas holiday. I'm still getting :o moments all over the place - walking out of your apartment in to the bustling city, it's seriously impressive. And the sound work is brilliant, walked in to a nightclub during last night's session, and the sound was like that scene from John Wick, heavy and oppressive.

I've only really played story missions so far, but going to spend more time off the beaten track I think. Just want to soak this up for as long as possible

Not surprised by that as Stadia works a lot better than I anticipated when I had a blast. The lack of games put me off though.

Have to say I'm loving this so far.

Playing on PC (2060) so no performance issues and the only bug I have encountered so far is that sometimes when I ride a bike my V loses his trousers and drives around naked from the waist down. Who am I to judge - when in Night City....

Oh you absolute shit. I'm trying to hold off on this until the next gen version is released and you've just made the wait a million times harder.

I was going to hold off until I got my hands I a PS5 also but then the game arrived ... whatcha gonna do?

im playing ona PS4 pro and whilst it makes it sound like a jumbo jet taking off in some areas I’ve not seen a glitch or poor performance yet

Played a few hours of this now on PS5 and I'm backing off til a proper next-gen update drops. It's a real curate's egg. The first impression is so odd - a kind of clash of impressive and retrograde. In its current console form it just feels a bit underwhelming to me. I think that's exaggerated by how bad it looks next to Miles Morales and Demons Souls. This feels like a game that needs to be played in its best state. It doesn't feel that fresh to me, in a way that Witcher 3 really did, partly because of overfamiliarity with the source material and variations on it over the years. I'm still looking forward to it, but I don't really want to play it like this.

Maybe it's because I started as Corpo that the game does it, but either way I fail to see the relevance of your point. Whether V can understand Japanese via a mod or just normally is irrelevant. If he can understand it, subtitles should remain on for it so the player can follow the conversation.

Played ten minutes of this last night on Series X. Saw those beautiful holographic fish from the trailer that float in the air.

This does not appear to be the same game. A bit like getting the spectrum version after seeing the screenshots from the amiga.

So how are people finding the combat in this? I'm actually enjoying it (bar the aforementioned weightless melee). I received a katana as a quest reward yesterday and despite consigning it to - never going to touch - I had to use it as I ran out of ammo and it was amazing! Feels really, really brutal but leaves you exposed as anything. Finding pistols to be my favourite gun so far too. Unlike most games they hit like absolute trucks and it's fairly easy to headshot for days, certainly easier than trying to tame the recoil on an SMG or assault rifle.

Only problem I'm finding is the character almost refuses to crouch sometimes but that is probably me being cackhanded rather than the game being at fault.

Other than the crouch thing, I'm in complete agreement. (I find myself accidentally crouching on occasion, instead!) Pistols are simply so satisfying to use, and have greater accuracy than the SMGs I've found so far.

I ran into a room full of Militech and sliced them all down, and it was both fun and, more importantly, so visceral. Enemies were reacting like some nutter swung a sword at them, and I'm now looking forward to using the baseball bat I looted from a side mission. With a bonus +2 Street Cred, to boot.

Can you have multiple games in progress at the same time?  If I hit the New Game button on the title screen will it wipe out my current character or let me build a second?

All your saves from the first character are still in the load screen even after you start a new one so you'll be ok

I think the most worrying thing I've heard from reviews so far is that the XP/skill tree stuff is wildly unbalanced and a bit rubbish; i.e. you don't get enough XP to really customise your V in a meaningful/good way.

Seen people say despite playing through the whole campaign and all side content, you still can't even max out a single 'branch' of the skill tree, which just seems bafflingly stupid.

I just won a competitive street brawl against these “two guys” by blocking one punch. They both fell down and I won 4000 Eddies. Fuck it, that’s a glitch I’ll take

After meeting the trainer, right? When I fought his robo-sparring partner I hit it once with a strong attack, it fell down, got back up, attacked me again then collapsed before I did anything more to it.

More on the world - it's absolutely not empty, even on base PS4. Not during the day, on foot, anyway.

This is the main reason I'm thinking of holding off. The bugs generally sound tolerable, if a bit immersion breaking, and the next-gen patch will be nice but I have a feeling they're going to end up overhauling the balance of the XP/progression system so you can actually unlock more than just a few skills. It seems bafflingly pointless to have a set of comprehensive skill trees and then not give out enough XP to be able to make any meaningful use of it.

Probably worth pointing out that in Witcher 3 it's only once you get into the Blood and Wine DLC that you have enough points to really start going deep into multiple skill trees. So it could partly be a design choice with a few to adding more content and ability points down the line.

Started this today on the Series X, much like everyone else I have early game Pros and Cons -

Pros -

It looks absolutely bloody glorious

Night City really does feel like a living breathing place, the amount you can do seems staggering

The work that has gone in to the side missions is excellent, puts other games fetch quests and repetitive go from A to B to shame

Cons -

Shock horror there’s bugs, loads of them, everywhere. I’m in no way a purest when it comes to games, if it’s janky so what, however considering I’m only a few hours in there have been an abundance -

3 times during the combat tutorial it froze and I had to reload my save, no biggy, it auto saves constantly.

Dead body’s ragdolling around the floor, reminds me of Goat Simulator.

There’s a ton of other minor niggles but nothing worth talking about.

Overall - Yes it has a few issues that I’m sure will be ironed out eventually and I really hope it doesn’t taking any of the shine off of what looks to be an amazing experience. I think I’m going to leave it there until the next patch but I will very much be looking forward to playing it when it’s a bit more finished.

Here are my first impressions spoilered for length.... probably of no interest to anyone that's played it but maybe useful to those on the fence.

Spoiler

Right I'm 9 hours in. Lets vomit up some first impressions.

I haven't quite managed to avoid the main storyline so far, I am doing it in dribs and drabs but I'm a bit scared that you can plow through it in 20 hours. This is colouring my play through a little bit with a constant worry about finishing it too fast.

The main missions I've done so far have introduced some great mechanics that I wasn't getting from the open world stuff. So I would say, run with the main story for a little bit and have a free roaming break. I found the start of the game a bit abrupt (I began as a Nomad) and was a bit put out by having my path decided for me but that's a minor niggle. The pacing at the start is really odd but business as usual soon resumes.

Difficulty:

The game has Witcher 3 levels of complexity but I haven't used a single consumable or crafted a single item yet. There has been no need. I'm playing on Hard. I started on the hardest difficulty which seemed fine until the second car chase, that was easy on Hard but seemed nearly impossible on the hardest setting.

I still have a nagging feeling that you need to be on the hardest setting to get the most out of it. But Hard seems ok for now. On Hard I cannot engage level 4 gangs successfully yet, but level 3 perps are  easy. I've died a couple of times on one of the missions and have utilised some minor hacking stuff.

My Mistakes / Their mistakes?:

The subject of hacking brings us to my stupidity, up until about 8 hours in I thought you had to hold down tab for all the hacking stuff, so I was really annoyed about how slow it all was. Hacking a camera meant an interminable wait while it loaded, quick hacks my arse I thought, and was looking at the skill tree to see how to improve the speed. When I suddenly found out you release tab after triggering the hack.....

I also hadn't spotted that you can switch between hacking and info mode while scanning. I feel like some of this stuff could have been explained a bit better.

Same with missions that involve Vendors. Get your gun it says, with no dialogue options or instructions. It turns out you just grab the free item from the shop. No one has even mentioned crafting or consumables to me yet.

I didn't bother using any skill points for the first 4 levels either as I really didn't have a clue where to put them (and still don't).

Performance (on a 3070):

Starting in the desert I was pleasantly surprised with the performance 70 fps on high RTX. Of course that all fell apart in the City, 20-40 fps is the norm. But I've managed to get my settings tweaked to get it looking great, with RTX still on and mostly between 40-60 fps which is fine for me. The Nvidia sharpen mode at 60% has helped I think, DLSS on performance. There is tonnes of discussion going round on this, with odd GPU usages being reported while CPU is maxed out. So I expect performance to improve with patches. As it is for me its very playable, but I'm not that fussy about framerate.

Visuals:

My god it looks good. It really feels next gen to me. Just walking around watching night city do its thing its a trip. Sure it has a limited pool of pedestrian types. And to begin with there doesn't seem to be much going on. But then suddenly the map fills up with events and you can just roam around fighting crime of exploring, and there are some fun little bits and bobs to uncover.

If you can keep the RTX on, its a delight, but I've only just got an RTX capable card so its all new and shiny for me. I'm looking into puddles and car windows a lot. Only mildly disappointed my character doesn't show up.

It all round looks good – really good (and sounds great too) , characters, interiors, exteriors are all impressive.

Combat:

I don't think the combat is 100% there. The cover system is a little glitchy, I often find myself suddenly standing up and getting shot which can be frustrating. The gun play is acceptable, I've turned off all the auto aim etc and it can be tricky at times. The challenge seems acceptable. I was a bit disappointed with the shotguns and grenades, but have been enjoying the sniper rifle.

The melee combat is nothing new. It's a little disappointing that they don't seem to have brought anything new to the game here. That said I am having great fun wading into gangs and dicing them up with my Katana :) Don't expect the melee approach to always work though.

All in all although it's not that original I'm enjoying the combat. Maybe I need to force myself to explore hacking / stealth etc a bit more.

Bugs:

I have experienced some bugs, but nothing like the crazy stories I'm reading. The negativity on this (on PC at least) seems way out of proportion.

I've died once on scenery. Crashed once and seen a couple of minor clipping issues. One bar person was slightly off centre for their pose. And that's it. The whole thing has been smooth sailing. Lets hope I haven't just jinxed it.

As Is aid I find the cover system a bit glitchy, and something odd about the movement, I may be triggering the dodge occasional by the way I play. The driving is a little odd in first person , but I'm sticking with it as a matter of principal, but I enjoyed hoofing it around the desert in third person a lot more.

Oh I also got the bald head / hat bug in the mirror.

Overall (Should you get it)...

Yes (if you are on a decent PC). It an amazingly well realised world. A visual feast. If you are a fan of Witcher 3 I am sure you will get on with it, you can see it's genetics in most of the game. Including a bit of clunkiness. If you are a fan of Cyber Punk or sci fi in general I think you will love it. Some great stuff that feels more cyber punky has started happening as I get a bit more into the main story, which is a relief.

There is def a strong GTA feel to a lot of it, which Isn't a bad thing but makes it feel … a little familiar. But it's well executed and being able to approach missions or encounters in different ways is really nice, even if I'm not exploring that as much as I should.

Be prepared for some bugs but not the glitch Armageddon you may be expecting. I found in fact that I was distracted some of the time looking out for problems that weren't there as a result of all the internet negativity!

Just lose yourself in Night City and enjoy it.

Some fun bugs i've had so far

  • Jackie walking straight through a closed elevator door
  • A bin lorry that refused to go round my parked car on a road wide enough for five cars. When i moved the car it teleported to it's destination
  • Parking the car on a slight ramp and going into a shop, then turning round and looking at the car and it's floating a foot above the ground (but straight)
  • Going to the gun range and shooting at targets in the underground , on site shooting range and hearing the people outside scream in terror and run for the cops (the people in the gun range carried on shooting)
  • A large part of my jacket clipping through my arm when holding a weapon
  • V's trousers and cock disappearing when he looks in the mirror of his apartment

As long as they don't break the game or i get stuck they are quite entertaining

yeah it was the first one after that was ready for an intense brawl but I blocked one of their attacks and they both took a dive like a premier league footballer

all in all its phenomenal but feels like it could have done with another 6 months. Small things like COMBAT MUSIC!!!!1 being triggered for the least bit thing and staying on forever, and the general murkiness and texture pop-in. Happens with my car a lot, where it looks like a PS1 model until the layers pop in.

Oh well. I’m just going to complete a Streetkid play through and work on my backlog until PS5 patch or whatever
