Ah, man, I'm going to have to replay this now I have a PS5, aren't I?

Yes

This is one of the very very few RPGs where I’ve actually Pd an R earnestly. When I played Skyrim or some other RPG I have certainly been blown away by the world, the narratives, the lore etc, but I always had a sense I was a person playing a game. Obviously I’m not suffering a psychotic break - I know I’m playing a game when I’m playing Cyberpunk - but I’ve never really inhabited the “role” part of RPG like I have playing this. I get lost in it, like a form of hypnosis. It’s not so much that I become V - we’re very different - it’s more that V becomes me. *I’m* exploring Night City, *I’m* skulking in the shadows watching Maelstrom through a CCTV screen like a predator, *I’m* investigating a crime in a dilapidated slum. *I’m* a down-and-out gunslinger with a deathwish and nothing but a fat fucking revolver and my wits to keep me alive.

I don’t know how to describe it. It’s almost like one of those 3D optical illusions with the two pictures side by side and you have to go cross-eyed to see it. You stare at it for a minute and then suddenly it transforms and you’re lost in this 3D image, and then you return to reality with blurred vision.

Or maybe I just sit too close to the TV.

I mentioned much earlier in the thread that I wish you could interact more with the environment, by like sitting down at a food court or whatever but having thought about it a bit more I’m not sure it really would add anything. Like @ZOK said in response to me, I crave more *content*. I want more stories, more characters, more intrigue, more Peralez. Playing darts won’t help me lose myself in Night City because V doesn’t give a fuck about darts. Fuck darts. She cares about *getting shit done*. She doesn’t want to join all the normies in the food court - V eats because she’ll die if she doesn’t, not because she wants to read a book and savor every bite of her beefless beef and peppers. You can only call it beef and peppers if you’re broke, and she’s sick of being broke.

How can you be sure? What if you're actually already in a game, and Cyberpunk is a mini-game within it?

I'm past the Act 1 starter stuff and I'm very impressed with the characters and storytelling and atmosphere so far. It's a lot more "human" than I was expecting. The city is still mostly unexplored and overwhelming, but I'm really looking forward to putting hours into it (as the only person on Earth who won't be playing Elden Ring).

I think the game struggles on Series X a bit though. Performance (in 60fps Performance mode) dipped to a much lower framerate in the dense and busy markets and red light areas of Japantown, and when riding Jackie's bike - felt like it went down to the 30s. Also the audio makes a break-up/stuttering noise quite often, which might be happening as things load in.

Not to mention the cosmetic and mostly harmless bugs - pedestrians glitching out, etc. During a mission the minimap shunted itself above the top of the screen and wouldn't come back until I reloaded.

I've played it for about a week now, and mostly enjoyed it, but think I need a break for a while (handy with Elden Ring due today).  I realised last night that I was finding it really depressing.  It's a testament to how convincing the world is, because they've built an incredibly believable dystopian future city and it's totally worked on me.  Everything is so dirty and sleazy and corrupt, and every character is so unhappy or angry or frustrated that I was feeling the same way after a couple of hours of playing.  Felt like I needed a shower after a main story mission in a high end brothel.

I can't imagine what it would have been like working on this game for 5 years or something.  You'd be suicidal by the end.

I agree with this having put 5-6 hours in. I think it works okay in small chunks though. I’m quite happy to play this alongside something else I think.

It’s the first open world game in a while where I’ve had no interest in fast travel.

Haven’t checked yet, but am I still the only biker in Cyberpunk? It’s a little thing, but honks me off enormously that you can buy loads of bikes, you see the, parked up with gangs by them but never driving on the roads.

There is a serious shortage of parked cars in the game. I was looking for one last night as I needed to get across the city and didn't have one of my own as I'm still at the start of Act 2; I was roleplaying a bit, and my character isn't mental enough to carjack someone, so was a bit stymied. You get the occasional gang car parked up and surrounded by goons, but I didn't think it was worth clipping five or six people to get temporary use of a vehicle.

I got stuck out in the boonies after I beached my van on a massive landfill area while doing the Delamain taxi missions. I headed to the closest road and thought I was in for a long walk but then I saw a car parked up not too far away next to a couple of cops in hazmat suits waving metal detectors about. I decided to chance stealing it, expecting to get shot dead as soon as I attempted it but they completely ignored me and I just drove off. It wasn't a police car, just a civilian model.

Didn’t you have the bike available? If not, then you should really complete the Jackie quest line. I did it very early (for RP reasons).

I like how sleazy and corrupt and grotty the world is -- it's like a culture with all its goodness sucked out. It's a culture where the most obnoxious green-haired Youtube influencers became the most sophisticated members of society. With a touch of Mike Judge's Idiocracy thrown in. I like how there's pornography everywhere -- there are adverts for hardcore porn on the News channel inbetween news segments. Children walking around the streets getting exposed to it all. It's got that 2000 AD/Judge Dredd style of grim satire that makes it work.

Maybe I haven't reached some of the really grimdark moments yet through. I just experienced the end of Act 1 and thought that

Spoiler

Jackie's death, and the wake held by Mama Welles at the bar

were handled really well - emotional and human. Made me feel that there is still plenty of human feeling still left in this world, and real human connections haven't rotted away entirely.

No. I did have a bike for a bit, but that was nicked from a gang I fought. I had to abandon it during one of the earlier taxi missions.

I’m not sure if I’ve completed the Jackie quest line.

Spoiler

Jackie is dead, and I think my next story mission is to meet Takemura in a cafe or something.

Played an hour of this last night. It strikes me as a cross between gta and fallout. There were a few bits that made me think 'fucking hell, that's amazing' and other bits that were so, so very janky that it was slightly bewildering in a 'is this running in dos?' kind of way....

Yes, CD is especially good at that. To echo this sentiment I was trying to find a tarot graffiti in the centre and I wandered into a building I had no idea what it was. After some moments it dawned on me that it was the Arasaka memorial - no major need but spoilered that just in case

Spoiler

the one Jonny had hit. It just felt such a human world building moment, seeing the ruins of the tower under my feet and listening to a conversation about the rescue effort of that day, one of the people saying "they kept finding bodies for hours and hours". Going into the main outside level with the memorial tablets, a group of monks was praying under the main Arasaka tower and the oppressive Militech building looming over the area.

Such a grand tragedy which became even more personal and chilly, when I remembered I had the one responsible stuck in my head.

I think the Jackie mission you get early in Act 2 depends on what you do at the end of Act 1.

Spoiler

If you get Del to deliver Jackie’s body to his family, you get the memorial mission where you go to his wake and speak to his family and friends, and then go to his lockup to get his bike.

If you get Del to deliver his body to Vik, then you just have a phone call with Mrs Welles, and you get his bike key delivered to your flat. You don’t go to his wake. In this option, it’s really not that clear that you can use his bike now - I only figured it out by accident, hence me looking for a car to discreetly steal.

It reminds me of walking around neon-soaked 2004 Amsterdam, the one which barely exists anymore.

You get to use it either way.

Although, I felt like a bit of a dick taking the second option after the first time.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Cyberpunk is the best example of why it's the right time to do a full on Judge Dredd open-world game.

Night City's great and all, but the thought of seeing (and then paying money to use) the Palais De Boing (tm) makes me very, very excited and possibly a little bit moist.

You don't play as Dredd, you play as a Rookie and you live his life. Go on a hot dog run in the Cursed Earth with the man himself. Missions to get your full eagle in big Meg, and then onto a full on story of your deeds.

It's mind-boggling that this hasn't happened yet! I wish Rebellion wasn't such a useless publishing house, got its act together and sorted this out.

ARGH.

My afternoon is now clobbered by thinking of what could be...

I would love an open world Dredd game, but it seems very unlikely that Rebellion could make a game on that kind of scale - they’re much smaller than CDPR, and don’t have a megahit like Witcher III under their belt to keep the lights on while they spend years making a virtual Mega City 1.

That would be the right approach to a Dredd game though.  Make it a Mega City game, and you don't play Dredd - he's just a looming presence.

Absolutely. I think the moment you make him a playable character you're on a hiding to nothing.

As for Rebellion not having the funds, that's very true. However, there's absolutely no need for their software division to make the thing at all. Their publishing arm could farm it out to a willing subject perfectly well. God knows there must be some devs out there who would chomp at the bit to do this sort of thing.

Man, Rocksteady making it would be a match made in heaven if you ask me.

Rocksteady would be perfect - they've got the technical ability, the experience with open world games, the chunky aesthetic and the storytelling skills to balance the black humour and satire of Judge Dredd. I just find it a bit unlikely that some publishing behemoth would pay Rebellion for the rights to spend tens of millions of pounds to make a game based on someone else's IP. It would be a huge risk.

I think Cyberpunk worked because it was CDPR funding it themselves, and the major draw there was the developer, not the IP. With the best will in the world, the Cyberpunk setting was pretty niche. The appeal was CDPR making a game in this world, and CDPR could only do it because they were thigh-deep in cash and were independent. I can't see EA or Microsoft bankrolling a Cyberpunk game on that scale (or a Dredd game). MS funded a Shadowrun game, but they clearly didn't want to stake too much on it.

Actually I always thought it was a missed opportunity for them not getting the Blade Runner rights. Being a Blade Runner is quite like being a Witcher, hunting down "monsters" and investigating -  and the design can easily justify exploring the world and doing all kinds of side quests, etc. Plus, the world is ripe for the kind of storytelling CDPR excels at, the moral grey area and bringing characters and human emotions to life.
