Misty’s hair is one of the very few bum notes in terms of visuals. She looks great, but the way her hair moves is slightly disturbing; it looks like it’s alive or like it’s made of jelly and ripples are running through it. Or that she’s just blow-dried it while standing next to a van der graaf generator.

I must say in what I’ve seen so far I am heavily channeling Bladerunner as I play. The main difference being the obnoxiousness and desolation of Night City.

Especially when you meet Misty who looks like Pris.

As opposed to the welcoming and festive environments of Blade Runner? 😜

Night City is much brighter than Blade Runner. But yes, of course there are Blade Runner vibes.

Forty hours in I have decided to continue with the main story. I have to meet Takemura to arrange an intricate mission and visit Pacifica. But since I was exploring the Badlands I decided to meet Panam first. After spending some time with her (as usual the writing and direction is great) I have to meet her at midnight to continue the quest. Just as I exit my motel room there is a kind of sandstorm around and of course very few people. Great atmosphere, somewhat ominous and oppressive, but I am glad because I will spend time with Panam, who seems fun.

And then I get a call from

Spoiler

Judy... She sounds in real trouble and she asks me to go to her place at once. I hop onto my bike and when I reach her place... Evelin has committed suicide...

WTF... WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK...

This game...

Also, I don't understand why quests don't describe the previous phases as they did in W3. Its not easy to remember the details sometimes.

I can't imagine what it would have been like working on this game for 5 years or something.  You'd be suicidal by the end.

It probably gets more depressing as it progresses. Don't read the spoiler if you haven't played it to an end.

Spoiler

Unintentional humour in Ste's post there.

I like how sleazy and corrupt and grotty the world is -- it's like a culture with all its goodness sucked out. It's a culture where the most obnoxious green-haired Youtube influencers became the most sophisticated members of society. With a touch of Mike Judge's Idiocracy thrown in. I like how there's pornography everywhere -- there are adverts for hardcore porn on the News channel inbetween news segments. Children walking around the streets getting exposed to it all. It's got that 2000 AD/Judge Dredd style of grim satire that makes it work.

Maybe I haven't reached some of the really grimdark moments yet through. I just experienced the end of Act 1 and thought that

Jackie's death, and the wake held by Mama Welles at the bar

were handled really well - emotional and human. Made me feel that there is still plenty of human feeling still left in this world, and real human connections haven't rotted away entirely.

THE grimmest and spookiest moment for me was in the late game when

Spoiler

you meet what's left of Jackie's consciousness.

I kept thinking "are these the same line readings as before  or have they recorded extra spooky versions"

So well done. Really creepy.

Which graphical settings should I be using on console? I’m on performance mode, obviously, but should I be leaving all the chromatic aberration and motion blur stuff on?

I would say turn off chromatic aberration and film grain. They do not impact performance but they slightly change the image for the worse in my opinion. But this is just what you like or not.

Chromatic Aberration is one of the worst "features" to appear in modern games. It's great that CDPR allows this to be turned off in consoles. Others Devs should take note.

As for side quests, I'm looking forward to all the new reactions to one sidequest in particular. Those who have played the game will likely know which one I'm on about.

There so many little things that can be so annoying regarding the UI, from inventory to trading to crafting (or other things like journal not keeping track of what has happened before).

But nothing gets me more than auto centering camera when driving. It’s beyond belief that this day and age a developer can’t give us full freedom on controlling the camera. 🤬

Other than the above, this is like living in another world, such is the detail and atmosphere of everything, from main to side quests. I am literally properly driving or walking everywhere. 😜

One thing I still don't quite understand: the quickhacks I can do - Ping, Short Circuit etc... I know I've got to equip these in my cyberdeck, but do I also upgrade these?  Are there higher level versions of Ping that I have to buy or craft, and replace the version I'm using, or does it work differently?

I only just discovered last night that a ripperdock sells attachments for the 'chrome' I've had fitted (like extra features for my cyber eyes), via a tab that seems to be labelled as if for me selling stuff to him.

Finally started playing this proper last night. Chose the Road Warrior/Nomad background (or whatever it is) and really enjoyed the intro mission.

Once got into Night City proper I was just gobsmacked at the level of detail and variety of the NPC's and the amount of stuff going on. Think I spent more time just wandering around than actually doing anything.

You don't upgrade them, but there are different quality tiers just like a rifle or silly hat. Quickhack quality starts at green, then blue, then purple, then finally gold for Legendary. If you find quickhack blueprints, you can craft them although I believe the quality you can craft is tied to whether or not you have the relevant Technical Ability perk. Best way to get crafting components for them is by hacking Access Points, and if you have the relevant Intelligence perk you can get more money from each Access Point - I strongly recommend this, because Access Points are pretty much everywhere and it's a good money-maker early game. In fact, it's been the first perk I choose through each of my playthroughs.

then once you have a better one you can equip it.

The sheer fucking density of this game.

Indeed, playing this on a PS5 and my only observation is that while this is clearly a massive world, there's not alot in it. Certainly not many humans wandering about.

I keep getting distracted doing the police's dirty work.

Picked this up cheap and played upto the start of act 2, really enjoying it so far but I feel a little overwhelmed with the crafting and inventory side of things, have pocket wiped pretty much every enemy I've faced and looted everything I find laying around. I need to spend a bit of my next session going through everything and trying to get my head around my heaps of junk and massive weapon stockpile, equipping the best stuff that I have and going through all my clothing too

There's also a shop at the central market (I forget the name, Kabuki?), that sells higher level quick hacks. The market that's on the giant roundabout that looks very asian city inspired.

*cracks knuckles*

Crafting requires Resources, a blueprint, and the relevant perk necessary to craft the blueprint of that quality. For instance, you start with the ability to craft grey and green items. Perks to craft blue, purp, and gold items are unlocked through Technical Ability > Crafting. Don’t worry about that for now.

Once you have a blueprint - these can be found or bought - you simply highlight what you want to craft, make sure you have enough resources, and have at it. Resources are most easily acquired by buying them, as they’re ennies on the eddy.

Note: you don’t actually need the associated Crafting rank to unlock certain perks. EG Edgerunner Artisan requires level 20 Technical Ability, but not level 20 Crafting. So you don’t have to grind crafting to get good at it, you just have to spend the Attribute points. This took me hours to discover.

Upgrading requires components + upgrade components. They’re separate things. Once again, just buy them. Upgrading your gear each time you level up is a good way to keep it relevant, but you can only really do this for so long because each time you upgrade something the number components required to upgrade it again becomes exponentially higher. So after several upgrades it’s more cost-effective to just craft something again, resetting the upgrade cost; items are always crafted to your current level.

Why should you craft anything at all, when you can just buy it or find it?

- If you save before you craft, you can reload a save if you don’t like the item’s stats, essentially rerolling things like Crit or Elemental Damage.
- There are a few perks that make crafted items x% better than a found or bought item with the same level. If you’re not playing on Very Hard, or if you’re in a low-threat area it’s kind of irrelevant but when you are up against Red Skull (significantly higher level than you) enemies every advantage makes a huge difference. Or you can just craft 100 frag grenades, get them cornered, and then spam them with explosives until they fall to bits:

I've put this screenshot up before, and it's not anything special on the surface...Until you realise that everything in it is a reflection! It's all very well having one option for these things on the console versions, but it's something else when you see it all on the PC release. All it adds is atmosphere, and it's definitely the only game I've played so far that properly nails that I think!

The bit in the middle is actually a reflective surface too, so we've got reflections in reflections!
