It does seem a terrible shame that they're jacking off RedEngine in place of Unreal 5. I mean, this trailer looks so fucking good. I'm guessing there be money involved somewhere, but if this expansion is a swansong for the engine, then it does look like a good 'un.

I thought it was a shame when they announced it, but from what I've heard since I can see the logic behind it. CDPR aren't in the business of licensing their engine out, and given the options:

Stick with RedEngine 4, having to rewrite a lot of it (it's a jenga tower of hacks on top of the Witcher III tech), involving potentially having to crunch again and find new people to replace the engineers that left after 2077 launched, just to keep up with UE5,

or

Just doing a big, multi-game decade-long deal to make that Epic's problem, while they have a ton of cash and multiple studios,

...I can see how the discussion must've played out. It was probably even shorter ("the old engine kept us off PSN store for six months") from a publisher's point of view.

I'm expecting Phantom Liberty to have a bit of a Wolfenstein Old Blood feel, the devs getting a chance to crank everything up to 11 in the old engine, but that will probably feel a bit 'last gen' a couple of years down the line. Still totally hyped for it of course!

I'm loving this. Bought myself a Series S in the black Friday sale and then this. 32 hours in and I feel there is so much more to do, the world is vast and I'm enjoying the sidequests. The katana is awesome.

Also bought Witcher 3 for £6.99 and have that to look forward to another time.

Having now played the new Fortnite season, I’m majorly hyped that CDPR is moving to Unreal Engine 5 and can concentrate more on world design and gameplay in the new Witcher games rather than toiling away on their own engine. The 5.1 version of Unreal Engine is incredible already - Lumen and Nanite are soooooo good, and can now run at 60fps on consoles.

Any tips on getting used to 30fps RT mode on consoles?

It looks incredible but it's really really hard to adjust to I'm finding.

I've only given it a go quickly for a few minutes before I had to leave again but for those playing that way - do you get used to it?

I got used to it accidentally after turning it on for photo mode. For what it's worth I have all the graphical options turned off except for Depth of Field, and have my TV in game mode. It's still a bit discombobulating on occasion but having switched back to 60FPS the other day I found it unplayable and switched it off after 5 minutes. The city felt flat and soulless comparatively

Finished the NCPD and gigs in Watson last night. Loved the last few gigs, lots of needing to sneak around without tripping alarms and some lovely areas where you're up in a block of flats or similar and off the streets. Never would have thought to walk up there without these quests. Incredible detail, makes me wonder what other interesting nooks I've missed.

It's too bad 480i output with these new consoles isn't an option. RT mode and 60FPS would easily be achievable if so. I bet it'd look absolutely fucking incredible on a CRT as well, condensed down that much with greatly enhanced motion resolution.

Good session this afternoon polishing off NCPD gigs in Pacifica, but not before realising I had the game on easy. Think I turned it down for an early Cyberpsycho encounter and forgot to change it back. Bumped it up now and the combat is even more fun, especially now I’m using a katana. Oh sorry, were you using your head?

Night City is such a damn enjoyable location. Playing there feels like being transported to a living, breathing place. It’s mind-boggling in scope and scale, but also leaves plenty of room for players to “head-cannon” their adventure.

One minor improvement I’d love for consoles: I wish some of the NPC clothes were available in stores. Bumped into some Scavs wearing lurid plastic macs that looked wicked. Probably a simple mod on PC to add them but on PS5 I had to just walk away and steal a natty yellow motorbike instead. Vrooooooom!

I wish one of my apartments let me have a Jay Leno's Garage bit for all my bikes. I can't drive cars in this game for toffee, but don't care because the bikes are such a joy. Even the Akira bike with its weird 75 gears.

Yeah, the bikes are totally rad. Occasionally jump in some of the quirkier little cars - we own a Smart car doing so feels familiar! - and while they’re fun to drive, they aren’t a patch on ripping through Night City on the bikes.

It's weird but despite my map being full of icons, there are areas I haven't visited it. That's why I like riding everywhere. Bought the yellow sport bike for tonight's riding, forget the name of it. Bit too quiet.

So somehow I've managed to spend absolutely no time in the city center at night. I know I've been there, it's where you do the taxi missions. But I've not properly explored. I swear, just stop walking and watch and anything here looks like a still from a film. Just love how varied this game is. Also, the HDR in this on the new telly is the first time I've squinted due to bright lights in a game

no … he has a bike company, in real life, that he owns with his friend.

it’s called Arch, and the Nazare bikes + Jackie’s Arch are designed after one of their product lines

Oh! Ah, I can't do bikes. Promised myself I'd never ride one, be too tempted to ride them like I do in games. I'll do them vicariously through V.

edit - yeah that's pretty spectacular. May as well get it in yellow given they hand built the 23 they made: https://archmotorcycle.com/arch-method-143/

They're all hand-built and customized to your measurements and preferences.

Edit: 2343cc, absolutely disgraceful

Man, you could probably get a years worth of amazing videogame entertainment out of CP2077 and W3 alone if you rinsed them both! Both incredible games!

Crafting question. Without really trying I've ended up with a few specs for legendary weapons. I keep meaning to get into crafting proper, and have Technical up to 18 for when I do. I did a Panam mission where I got a new gun and noticed I could craft the epic version, and then realized I could make the legendary one. I still have the epic and original rare - can I just disassemble those? As crafting sometimes (iconic only?) relies on having the previous version, I wondered if I needed to keep them. I suppose I could shove them in the stash, just in case.

Speaking of the stash, are there specific weapons that go in the placeholders on the wall at my apartment? I've got a few iconic weapons now, but putting them into my stash doesn't make them appear on the wall (which is what I guessed would happen). Is this not even a thing?

I finally did a story mission last night, long chain with Takemura. That was excellent fun. Also, a bajillion NPCs in the crowd. I've got a new blade which I think will go on the stash wall, although I'm going to craft the legendary version and use it, too.

Speaking of which, I was carefully going over abilities when I noticed legendary quick hack crafting. Doh. Was able to make most of them on the spot, after all that diligent terminal hacking. Some really nice passive effects, I wish I was able to load more into my cyberdeck.
