5 Years From Now......

.... EA will dominate the game charts to a massive extent.

I can't recall how many of the top ten games at christmas where EA, but it was a few.

Now, small developers/publishers are going belly up/being bought out all the time at the moment. In a few years time there will be a lot less people releasing games.

EA, on the other hand, will go from strength to strength, buying up developers and bringing more licences and franchises under their brand.

At the moment, about 8% of the games I have are EA ones. I can see this figure increasing dramatically over the next few years ( and I don't consider myself a "casual" gamer - the sort of person normally associated with buying EA product )

Now, EA have produced some good games and things seem to be getting better all the time, but they also produce some right crap and because of canny marketing and the right licence it still sells by the bucket load.

I can see 8 out of the top 10 games being EA published in 5 years time, particularly at xmas.

Is this bad for gaming? I'm not sure, but it seems that EA are now becoming a software gaming giant of a kind we have never seen before ( well, maybe Nintendo at the height of the SNES ). And they don't have to worry about hardware manufacture. They have some very clever people working for them.

I reckon that at least Microsoft and Nintendo will tire of EA's antics and might do something about it. Maybe?

Why would they be tired of it? EA games can sell a console. Whoever embraces EA the most will be making the most sensible business decision...

didn't EA have 6 games in the christmas top ten. If they were all of the quality of their games published by studios they've absorbed into the trapper keeper (Maxis/Westwood) it would be ace but alas we're stuck with MOH: Another Dead German, NFS What do you mean the car is supposed to feel like it's on the road.

so yes it isn't very good. a monopoly never is.

Was the original post written in 1998?

;):( Haha, brilliant.

Anyway, as far as EA domination goes, I don't see it getting much greater. They don't cover all genres, and I doubt they ever will. Their domination of the ones that they do specialise in (e.g. sports) could increase though I suppose.

Don't forget Lord Of The Rings ReallyReallyGood, that's in there too.

The only EA games ive bought in the last 5 years is SSX and SSX tricky, oh and the sims

Reading your post I was suddenly compelled to check my games collection for any EA games I might have. I have around 15-20 Gamecube titles, 30-40 Dreamcast titles a handfull of GBA titles and a few PS2 and Ps1 titles. Not a single one of them are an EA game.

I don't have any EA games either. I had FIFA2003, but that got sold.

I'm actually surprised. I thought I would have at least a couple of thier games.

EDIT: Actually, I have the original Road Rash on the Megadrive at the back of my wardrobe.

Nice to see that people who don't own any EA games are so certain of the shiteness of them.

I've got a few EA games and I don't think they're that bad. The EA Big games like the SSX-series are brilliant, NBA Street 2 is very enjoyable and so are some of the licensed games like the LOTR games. Maybe they don't release the most innovative or original games, but most of the stuff they do is of high quality. Unlike the shite that Atari is putting on the shelves lately...

I have NEVER said I thought any EA games were shit. I guess all I was trying to imply in my original post was that I've never been compelled enough to buy one. I do have an N64 and Snes as well as previously owning a Sega Master System and a whole flock of Amiga's ...Oh and a ZX Spectrum. I'm sure I HAVE owned EA games in the past(only one I can think of as a definite was fifa '94 on the Amiga, it was shit though ...well it was) but where the current generation is concerned no game of theirs have ever tempted me.

*returns from room* Of the 387 games I looked through, to the best of my knowledge, 11 of them were by EA, 6 of which were Megadrive sports games.

My god man!! 387???

Shitting crikey. That's a lot of games.

I haven't got any EA games by the way. This isn't a conscious decision - just the way it is.

And they made Desert Strike, brilliant, brilliant game.

In the arcade, did that have a cab where you sat on a big chair which was about 4 foot off the ground, and it swivelled around, and you had a stick and what not? Or am I thinking of something else?

Either way, yes it was brilliant, although I loved Jungle Strike even more. That level where you had to protect the President's motorcade? Oh dear lordy, what fantastic lovliness!

There's a Desert Strike port for the GBA, anybody know if it's any good?

Nope, but the Atari Lynx version was enjoyable. Obviously not a patch on the Megadrive version. The Lynx version was programmed by a 'James Bailey', but not the same one who used to post on here. Where did that guy go?

Exactly.

If EA made more games that appealed to me, I'd buy them. I sold FIFA2003, not because it was rubbish, but because I'd just bought WE6:FE, and didn't have any use for it. I was much happier having the twenty quid. I played through Medal of Hono(u)r Frontline, but took it back because it was just too average, and I would never have played it again.

It's just the way it is. I plan on buying Tiger Woods 2K4 when I can find it cheap enough. In fact, there is a huge Tiger Woods cabinet in the pub I frequent, and I am always playing it. EA make some good games yes, but they also make some very average ones, and in my opinion, even thier best stuff isn't worth purchasing over something like Viewtiful Joe or Metroid Prime (and other games of similar quality), which is where I have spent most of my money this year.
