I’ve got a real soft spot for David Millar. I don’t enjoy watching cycling as much  if he’s not commenting. Similarly I think Gary Imlach is an absolutely brilliant anchor, he’s genuinely funny and dry with it. 
 

I’m going to really miss watching the ITV highlights every night. 


Reading that bit about the ITV highlights, the TdF tune played in my head (you know, it plays going into and out of adverts...)

Uh oh...

 

just catching up with the Paris coverage now, Imlach talking through the GC table: “Richie Porte, the patron saint of cycling misfortune” :lol:

 

I like Richie Porte, but I imagine if he went to casino he would probably lose all his money and somehow contrive to lose a limb too...

These last few days in the Giro have been pretty extraordinary.

 

Highly debatable that the race should even have been run but the withdrawal of two major teams through COVID and the loss of the pre-race favourites gave us a an amazing race. 

 

Seven stage wins and the GC after losing their leader and being forced to ride a non-typical Sky/Ineos race is really quite something.

And they took the lead in the Vuelta today, as @footlesuggest reports of Ineos’s demise were rather overstated!

 

Was an amazing race that early on with the COVID positives looked like it might not get very far. What’s amazing is that Tao and Jai were 11 and 10 on GC after the second TT, over 3:30 down on the leader at the start of the third week. We knew it was a tough week but what a turn around for two young riders. It’s been said a lot this year but the younger generation is really coming through, 1,2 and 3 in the young riders competition were 1,2 and 4 on GC.

As a fan of athletics and latterly cycling, but who basically believes once you're doping you've achieved nothing, it's always difficult, particularly good performances give you a bad feeling. I've been in a stadium watching an athlete win a gold medal by a lap over the runner up and I find it impossible to feel good about it. For athletics, I choose to believe it's possible to compete clean, even if many or most are not. For cycling at the moment, I don't know whether they're all on something or not. But my subconscious has labelled Pogacar with an asterisk, it just can't suspend disbelief in his case.

Cav has had a remarkable comeback hasn’t he?

 

I’ve followed cycling for many years now and I find it’s just best to assume that they’re all doping to one degree or another. If it’s not banned stuff then it’s fringe treatments which would cause raised eyebrows in any context outside of professional sport.

Yeah. Simultaneously with the above I've been loving Cav's comeback and finding it genuinely quite moving and inspirational, gives you a bit of hope when things are tough in your own life. (Rather than choosing to find it suspicious, as I often do when there's late career improvements).

 

My GCN subscription has been a great buy over lockdown. I might not go outside much but cyclists going nice places burbling away in the background as I work is very pleasant.

I was just thinking about Cavendish. Three years away from the tour and 36 years old and he comes back as a last minute replacement and wins two stages already. Have all of his main rivals already been injured in the early stage crashes because last time he was part of the tour he was struggling to win stages.

Yes - lots of them have, and the remaining teams haven't got themselves together - but he's also part of a team that's really set up for sprinting and gets a lot of practice at it.

Pogacar's ride today was unbelievably dominant. It's been a very long time since I've seen such a display of pure power that did so much damage. 

 

Its a shame the early crashes seem to have removed Roglic as serious competition to him this year though as last year's finale was incredible...

This is all just getting ridiculous now. That performance today after the ITT the other day! I just don’t believe it. It’s not just Pogacar as well. There have been particularly dubious performances for the last couple of years but it seems to have come to a head this year. Bahrain gettin all these wins now. I’d love to believe in Cav’s comeback but the DQS train and Ewan being out can’t explain it.

 

I don’t think everyone is doping and PED’s don’t produce equal performance improvements anyway. I’m pretty disillusioned with all elite sport tbh. I really should stop watching any of it.
