I don't begrudge any footballer his wages. Apart from rare instances its a career that can last as little as 10 years at the top level and once it's over through either retirement or injuries they are never going to earn similar sums again so I don't blame them for making as much money as they can during the short time they are a professional footballer at the top of the game.

Not that I disagree with the principle of it entirely but that old chestnut was very debatable even back when top players were getting paid £15k a week, never mind the ten or twenty times that that some are getting now. No-one's stopping them from working afterwards (not that many of them near the top should need to) and, for many, a football career can go on for years after the playing ends. Especially since the top coaching and management jobs are practically a closed shop if you didn't play at a decent level.

If it doesn't go to the players it'll go to the owners. A lot of these "mercenaries" that people complain about are from not exactly rich countries, and it doesn't bother me one bit them getting the money. Uruguay is hardly an oil backed dictatorship so I would rather see the money in his pocket than a lot of the other people involved in football at the moment. As for the rest of it, if you don't like it, cancel Sky Sports and watch local football. By still participating in the system you're part of the problem. It won't change while people are willing to pay.

I have no problem with Cavani earning top dollar; it just made me laugh that he was making out as if money was irrelevant and he had a childhood dream to join these clubs, even though they're nouveau riche who were fucking shit when he was a kid. That might wash if he was talking about Real Madrid, but not Man City and Chelsea.

I dunno, the way I read that was more that he dreamed of playing for an illustrious team in this country rather than those two specifically. I know it doesn't quite read like that but I'm assuming the quote's in translation too. It's pretty much a stock response that you tend to hear from foreign players.

Or if not, I'm sure he wasn't the only guy in Uruguay dreaming of playing alongside Eddie Newton or Andy Dibble.

In fairness Chelsea did win the FA cup in '97 when he was probs about 10 or something, which I believe represented the first major trophy lifted by a foreign manager in England's top flight with Gullit at the helm and, therefore, arguably a major turning point in the continentalerizerameration of our previously dour brand of football which potentially could be enough to plant a seed of interest in the most anoraky sub-group of Uruguayan footballing wunderkinds.

Or, as you say, he fucking loves money and all the soapy tits that come with it.

Has a player ever come out and admitted that they're just in it for the money? It seems like it would reduce their value to their new club, in terms of shirt sales and the like, so they kiss the badge.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto has never hid his opinion that he's just lucky to be a talented footballer and can make a living doing that wherever possible. He's also commented on the irony that, despite essentially being a mercenary, he's been at Spurs longer than a hell of a lot of badge kissers.

A few have and it's always a refreshing breath of air.

Tomasz Radzinski on his move to Everton:

"They are offering me a wonderful four-year deal, I could earn three times as much as I do know at Anderlecht. I know Everton are not a top club, they don't play in Europe.

And earlier this year Hulk admitted moving to Zenit for the cash:

"I will not lie, people know I'm a footballer and I had to seize the moment with Zenit's financial offer."

gah, after the dodgy bank who owns us went bust the whole Hearts team has been put on the market, with managment blaming the fans for not buying enough early season tickets. Assholes.

Arvydas Novikovas has been released. I've been looking around to see where he's heading next. Word is it that it'll be a German team. I only hope that wherever he goes next is a team that features in FIFA 14 :-)

That should not stop you Fry!

You could get a game for Crues some of the days I watch them.

You need to make a traning montage. YOUR TIME TO SHINE.

I hope so. I don't know anything about the lad other than he turned Chelsea down in order to sign for us.

Speaking as somebody who is sick of seeing the very richest clubs hoover up every bit of talent on the off chance that they make it big I'm glad to see somebody who would rather, you know, actually play football. The fact that my club are the beneficiaries is a huge bonus.

It's like how AC Milan got in the 90's, raiding Ajax and ruining them with none of the players doing well at Milan until they left.

No young player should go to Chelsea or City, they simply will not be given the chance to develop.

Yeah like Oscar, Hazard and Azpilicueta right?

And next season De Bruyne, Lukaku and Schurrle will all be there too and with the exception of Villa, Chelsea will have the second youngest squad in the league.

Well done to Chelsea for paying £££'s for a young squad. Those players were already established, Chelsea didn't nurture them into the players they are they just came in and threw money at them.

Well hooray for double standards. I believe your original quote was 'no young player should go to Chelsea' so by that logic they are damned either way.
