To continue the UI is shite point....

I just had a cracking game on Gears 4 mp and got 2 excellent shotgun kills against 2 fools who charged me and did not know back in the day I was a founding member of the 'Invincible super team' so I wanted to record it...

First double tap and nothing happens as is std, net double tap and it brought up the power off options, third double tap and back to the dash - on the fourth we finally got to record my greatness...

But of course, that took more than 30 secs so nothing recorded of the moment I wanted FFS

I've just bought an Xbox One with the intention of playing Halo 5, Sunset Overdrive, MCC and the Gears collection.  Are there any other essential console exclusives (bearing in mind I have a gaming PC and PS4) I should be looking at?  I generally like shooters, arcadey racers, tactics games, card/board games and retro games.

"Xbox record that"

"Hey Cortana record that"

or do double tap but do it properly.

Of course having fluffed your chance over 30 seconds you still had the option to snap GameDVR and record up to the last 5 minutes then trim what you needed from the video but y'know calling the UI shite on a forum was definitely the way to go :hat:

I don't have a Kinnect, didnt have my headphone on either..

Double tap doesnt work properly, google it and I'm not the only one to have ever had it not work as expected....

No idea there was a backup app for when it didn't work as intended - I have taken steps and upped the recorded time to 3 mins and now know another way.

I knocked the PS4 recording when it was a simply broken on launch, its works flawlessly now so I don't mention it - its just part of the broken UI on the xbone so will mention it for fairness.

Speaking of being being fair, I do like how you can watch some youtube and goto a game and come back to where it was - I have found it handles multiple apps better than the PS4 as a rule - the features are all there and good but the interface is where the issues are IMO.

Nobody has a Kinnect.

Since Cortana came out, you can use your headset to do voice control.

Double tapping the Xbox button properly tends to work too.

Plus as said, there is the game dvr app too.

I find the double tap unreliable too. Seems to me like it would be simple enough for them to add the options when you go to the dashboard, that way it's a single reliable press away.

Holding down the button is all they need, give it multi options like the PS4 does now - its needlessly complicated on the Xbone and obv a hangover from Kinect integration but now they have binned it off they need to think about making the whole UI more pad friendly.

Out of interest (and only because I've literally never had an issue with double tap) have you tried a different controller. I can imagine it being slow but from what you reporting it sounds like it's not registering a double tap as opposed to it being an issue with th OS misinterpreting it.

personally I'd hate them to change it to a single hold as that is already tied into a number of other functions (joining a party, reading a message, opening an achievement) it's annoying enough if you are trying to turn the machine off just as an invite comes in, let alone if you are mid game and it loads another game.

Second pad as original xbone and now the S.

The long hold would work as it does on the PS4, same thing with reading a message and joining a party - they don't come up often so not an issue I would imagine.

Share button on PS4 is a more elegant solution so I guess it could be a limitation of button numbers on the pad.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the long button press to take the place of the double click. The fact if any notification comes up at the point you press and hold will open up another app (and potentially a different game killing the one you are in) is a horrible risk.

Basically they are following the paradigm they set on the 360.

I would think if they change the double tap to a long press, the long press screen would include the option to accept invite/see achievement that's just popped, rather than it being confused and try to do two things at once.

For what it's worth, on our 2 original pads and the elite pad, I still get problems with the double tap registering. Not enough to annoy me or make me complain though.

So adding an extra step to accepting invites etc., sounds annoying. Additionally by doing that you are changing an interface paradigm that has been there since the birth of the 360. The issue seems to be registering the double click as opposed to the mechanic being wrong (although I appreciate if you can't guarentee a physical function will work you need to come up with an alternative).

Anyway I'll butt out now as having never experienced it I'm not one to comment on how annoying it might be.

I regularly have issues with the double tap for screenshots etc. I'm fairly certain they've persisted over multiple controllers, including my current Elite pad. It's not a major issue, but it's one of the many minor issues that crop up from time to time and detract from the overall experience.

Hasn't stopped me ordering an S, but I'm an idiot so your mileage may vary.

I have a Kinect!

Using the headset is fine, but means you can't use your own headphones, unless they have a mic.

I bought a chatpad on a whim, and to be honest I wouldn't be without it now and it has dedicated picture and video buttons.

The main problem with the double tap (in my extensive experience of 2 weeks of Xbox ownership) is simply the name. They should've called it the double press. With the sponginess of the Xbox button you have to give it a good push, tapping like a tap on a touchscreen won't register, and the system seems to be pretty generous with the time between presses. I can only assume Shimmy's frustration is down to his cack-handedness/girly thumb pressing.

That said, the UI does take quite a bit of getting used to even coming from a 360. It's not particularly intuitive. I still tend to fully close down games after I'm done with them by hitting the Start button and close game once I'm back at the dash.

Have they improved the way recording video works lately?

One of the things I love about the PS4 is that it's always recording a buffer of 720p video - at a fairly high bitrate - in the background, so if you did something cool and think, "I wish I was recording that", it turns out you were, and you can dump it to a local mp4 file, then do what you like with it... transfer it to a USB stick, share it to various social medias, etc. It used to be a buffer of 15 minutes, but they recently upgraded it to a whole hour.

On Xbox 1, the last I checked, you can start recording 5 minutes of video manually, but you can't just save the last few minutes of gameplay if you hadn't pressed "record" first. Some games could save cool moments randomly if they are programmed to. The 720p video is very low bitrate, because it doesn't get saved locally -- it gets automatically uploaded to your Xbox account. It's intended for short social clips only.

Has any of that changed?

Yeah, it's changed a lot since launch.

Clips are stored manually and also uploaded to your Xbox Live profile. You can choose to delete either the locally stored or the cloud stored version. You can also share clips to Onedrive and upload to YouTube straight from the console.

You can record up to the last 5mins or the next 5mins on the console.

You can record hours of gameplay by streaming to PC using the Xbox App and using that to record game play in up to 1080p.

I don't really have problems with double tapping (but have had it not work once or twice) buy yesterday I was trying to get back to the dash and nothing was happening every time I hit the hkme button. Then all of a sudden each press seemed to register at once and I went out to the dash and back into the game loads of times at once. That was an interesting one.

You've been able to record the last five minutes ever since the console launched, IIRC, by using GameDVR and telling it to end recording now instead of start recording.

The "Xbox, record that" (or "double-tab Xbox, hit X") function for saving the last x time period of video was also updated a while back, adding the option to increase the time from 30 seconds up to five minutes.

Oh yeah and you can also use" Hey Cortana, record the last X minutes" for up to 5mins.
