Decision making in the final third has been shocking today, main culprits Downing and Gerrard. Agger stupid for the red card, Skittle has a tendency to lose focus/urgency on the ball and it cost us. The ref has been shocking today imo though - no complaints on the penalties but he's given such soft yellows to us, West Brom have got away with some cynical fouls and is far too whistle happy. Let the game play for gods sake.

After the superb refereering in the Euros and Olympics it's a big fall back to Earth.

I think you're all being a bit harsh, sure we've been fucking shite the second half but we were playing well in the first. Once we lost the goal and Agger, we went back to the same usual shite as last season as a default because we're so used to playing that way but before that the signs were promising. We either need to get Downing out of the team or stop him being so terrified of having the ball and if we do go behind again, just keep doing what we're doing and not revert to type.

I think the biggest disappointment for me today was Gerrard. He goes for the glory pass far too often, and moves break down far too frequently as a result. The killer ball isn't always on. What happened to playing it simple, keeping possession, waiting for a good opportunity to pass it up to the strikers? Rodgers needs to hammer that into him a bit more. I'd imagine a big problem for Rodgers is, if Gerrard isn't playing well - is he able to drop him? Hopefully he'll up his game - as he often does - against the bigger sides we're playing in the weeks to come.

That game was a classic performance from the Kenny era though. Plenty more games to go in the season, we need to remember it's early doors and this match only reinforces the idea that top 4 is a tall order this season. As others have said we were playing well first half before the Gera goal, and even the beginning of the second half. After Agger's sending off we totally fell apart.

Dreadful result today, though I understand that in the first half we were decent, without really creating much, is that fair?

It's going to take time for the team to settle down and for Rodgers' plans to take hold but unfortunately we don't have that luxury, especially with the next few fixtures coming-up. I said when the fixtures came out that we could - conceivably - have our season over by the end of September. And whilst that's a little dramatic, Werner was talking the other day about how critical it was to get back into the top-4. He didn't put a time-scale on it (as you would expect), but given the money he's seen spent in the last 18 months I wonder how tolerant he will be if we fail to get it this season (and by a long way)?

Lets keep things in perspective- FSV have barely spent anything on transfers. Bear in mind we have sold around £80m of players.

Our team may be slightly stronger this year but the squad is certainly weaker. I can see us finishing anywhere between 6th and 10th. People talking about top 4 are living in an absolute dream world.

I cant remember the last time we got thrashed so badly on the opening day of the season.

but so many of the posters on here assured us it was all Dalglish's fault so how can this be happening?

What an odd statement to make. I'm not sure how you can equate people not thinking Dalglish is right for the job to meaning that if he's not there everything will magically get better.

Wait, what? This season you've spent over £20 million and sold no where near that. Last season you bought 2 players for around £35 millions, and barely recouped that. Even the season you sold Torres for £50 million, you bought Carroll and Suarez for well over that. Yeah, you've sold £80m of players over several years, but you've spent loads more bringing players in. Unless you're talking about something I'm completely not getting, I'm really not sure how you can say that.

I agree that the squad is weaker - I don't think too many would disagree with that - but whatever fans feel about the likelihood of getting 4th, Werner clearly feels differently. He talked last January about it, he talked before the end of the season about it, and he talked last week about it. It dominates most interviews he gives. I think he genuinely feels we should be competing for it - perhaps not this season (but maybe?) but very soon.

I think also the fact is we've overpaid for players that just haven't worked out (for whatever reason) and taken massive losses on them, and that has meant the purse strings haven't been as loose as they might have been.

And that's our worst opening-day defeat in the top division since 1937.

Our net spend over the past two seasons has been £20m and around £30m respectively. NESV have not invested huge amounts of money in the club. The squad was desperate for investment when our net spend was negative for the two seasons before that! In order to improve league position, its almost always necessary to invest significant amounts of money.
