Man, I'm not sure I can call it fun anymore bu it's certainly compulsive. I had a quick scout around the net and people are saying you can beat it everytime, but I've no idea how that happens. I wish it had voice activation, I'd love to be sitting here like picard barking orders and it would be better for the old RSI too...

I must have played about 20 hours worth now in short bursts and I've not managed to beat the final boss. I'm getting much better at it as time goes on with most runs ending around sectors 6/7 (stupidly on the 3rd fight against the boss I didn't realise they were racing to the Federation base and lost), a lot depends on look and the equipment given. One time I might be droid heavy, another its transporters and crew all the way but never at the same time. Yesterday I managed to max out everything on an Engi ship then my shields and weapons were disabled on a fight before the boss. Before I knew it I was destroyed!

Just got this, I love the way so much of it happens in your head. Had precisely three goes on this so far:

-attacked rebel scum, got vaporised.

-ran out of fuel, drifted for ever in the endless void.

and currently:

-nail-biting evenly-matched battle with rebel ship, they send boarders, I vent the o2 where they board, but not before they've managed to disable my bloody door controls. I finally kill the boarders, destroy the ship (after their cowardly attempts to jump away, then bribe me to stop). I'm left with four crew and a ship with vacuum in half the innards. One by one my stalwart crew take turns repairing the door controls in vacuum, their health ticking away. It's only because of the fourth crew member (a delightful lass i rescued from a slaver) that i get it fixed without any casualties. doors closed, o2 back on, everyone into the medbay, and... KESTREL, AWAY!!!

so, yeah. Awesome game.

Huh. I had a pretty good run going, but then got boarded by mantis on a rare game where I had a great ship but only three crew. Barely fought them back, but it took long enough that the solar flares torched me good. Lost the medibay and crewmembers were weak enough from the fight that I had to vent o2 to kill the flames. But then another flare hit me before I could recharge the engines and knackered my door controls, leaving my half-dead men sealed in isolated compartments with both medical and doors open to vacuum.

Guess how that game ended. :(

Heh, first time using the engi ship and I got right to sector 8 for the first time.

Got there in good nick, too. It's such an efficient little ship with the right loadout that I was rolling in scrap.

Got lucky and got an ion mk1 to complement my mk2 early on, then was awarded a hvy laser shortly after. So I could simply target shields with one, and weapons with other, and sit back while my laser slowly pecked them to death, holding a laser drone and beam drone in reserve for tough targets.

Got lucky enough to get a glaive to replace the laser near the end. Absolute death ray. Even got enough upgraded systems that I could run the lot in parallel.

In the end I got just short of the command ship. Got slowly whittled down on the way to him and the free repair places all happened to be on the far side of the map on the frontlines. So they'd all been overrun before I got anywhere near.

The random element on this really just give with one hand and take with the other.

Fucking hell!

Have faced the command ship a couple times since.

This time I had the kes with the artemis and laser from the initial loadout, combined with a small bomb launcher and pike beam.

Had enough power to run them in parallel with each other, again, but this time also had a fully upgraded cloak, the cloak weapons augment, and the weapon pre-igniter. Instant alpha-strike on most ships!

Anyway, won the first fight eventually, but expended my missiles. So switched out the two missile weapons for a spare hull breaching laser I had.

All went quite well til I got drone swarmed. Fucker.

edit:

Oh man, finally nailed it. Same cloak + alpha-strike combo as before, except this time I was lucky enough to get 2 mkII lasers, an ion blaster and a mk2 heavy laser. Basically a massive barrage attack on multiple systems, or combine the lot to be absolutely certain that key target gets obliterated. The command ship never had a chance.

Even then I lost three crewmen in the dying moments. Fires raging through the midsection, helm control lost, cloak and shields down, weps barely still firing. Had to vent the whole midsection just to contain things, and the moment the fires were mostly contained had to pull everyone back to combat the remaining boarding party. Lost 2 zoltan and my gunnery chap holding the enemy in a still blazing, rapidly decrompressing portside compartment while I pulled the remaining 4 critically injured crew back the the only remaining safe area aft of the bridge.

I like to think that it'd be reminiscent of one of those bits in DS9 where the defiant is all shot to hell and adrift with a couple of survivors awaiting pick-up.

Did I mention this was on easy?

!!!

I'm finding the boss fight to be a complete bitch, even on easy. If the repair nodes don't fall favourably, it's so tough. I was on 100% before the first encounter, but it was impossible to repair afterwards, managed to get to the third round but I didn't last two minutes, even with full shields.

I've been having fun with the teleport, if you have two mantis, they soon max out their fighting stats and with a healing bomb turret, you can pretty much keep them alive indefinitely. It's a great game, I hope they make a sequel and flesh it out a bit, there's so much they could add.

I've only actually achieved anything on easy.

I was gonna switch up to normal once I'd unlocked more ships, but am not really getting much opportunity to do that.

Just tried to unlock the redtail by getting a multi-species crew, but didnt see enough. In the process though, I did get to the boss with maxed engines, shields, and a load of weapons.....and still got ganked because I didnt have a cloak. Pfft.

I really like the default stealth ship, I got to the boss the other day and I still had the starting mini beam, so I figured I'd be screwed, but I managed to take him down pretty easily. I think the three weapons were hull laser 2, the beam and finally the ion bomb, that thing rocks. Recently, even if I'm not running a drone build, I've started getting the module plus the hull repair bot, it helps a ton on the final zone.

I've been reading about this for months, but only taken the plunge now it's half price and I have some free time.

I can really echo people's sentiments that it gets its hooks into you really quickly. I could hardly sleep last night! I don't really care if it doesn't last that long if it was this sweet.

I love this game so much! Completed on easy (with the Stealth Cruiser) for the first time after 18 hours' game time  I was really lucky- managed to buy 2 scrap recovery arms in the early game so I was maxed out on everything by the Last Stand and had almost a full crew. Also got given a Glaive Beam a couple of sectors from the end- 3 damage per room! Replaced the Pike Beam I'd been using before. My setup was a 2-shot laser, a 3-shot laser, and the Glaive- meant I could drop in, wait for them to fire, cloak while the missiles are in transit, then uncloak once my weapons were charged, fire 5 shots to try to get through the shields and then glaive them for usually 9-12 damage.

Anyone struggling with boarders, this is my (fairly well documented and reasonably intuitive) strategy

As soon as you come across a ship with a teleporter, vent as many of your rooms as you can while keeping your crew in oxygenated rooms around the medbay (ideally 'behind' the medbay). Below a certain oxygen level, the boarders will ignore the systems they were meant to be targeting and just try to get to the nearest oxygenated room- where you've got 3 nigh-on invincible dudes (due to being constantly healed). If you have blast doors (which is a very worthwhile upgrade) you can be more selective about where you vent once they drop in- again, if you can vent their room quick enough, they won't manage to take out any systems. And then, once they're hacking at a door to try to get through before they asphyxiate, you can use another of the ship's airlocks to vent the room they're trying to get into from the other side :D Cruel, and so satisfying. The only tricky things are breach droids- you've just got to try to contain them (although letting them out of the breached room first is a good idea) and then run your crew in shifts between battling the droid and healing up.

A lot of the game seems to be luck-based, in terms of which quests come up, but it's so much fun! I'll be getting a W8 tablet soon, I think it'd be even better on that- proper star trek style. The only issues I can foresee are pausing (can you do that on-screen or only with space?), and maybe precision right-clicking.

I came to the realisation earlier that I have probably been playing this wrong.

I've been trying to get to the exit as soon as possible, thinking that the rebel chase would still stay behind between sectors. Now I'm thinking it resets between sectors?

I've been really struggling with getting enough scrap, and I know more exploration would solve it, so will try this out later to see if I do any better.
