RPL United - Season 19

When you play badly and win, it has been a good week.

The second match seemed like one of those where the game just decided you can't make a five yard square pass! A scrappy goal and one from a corner is just what we needed. I thought we defended really well apart from the first 15 minutes in both games, when I thought Rovers probably should have scored. We got away with letting them back into both games, but let's not let that happen again.

Man of the Match

Match 1

United seemed to be in cruise control, but only just scraped through 2-1 in their opening game of the season. The loss of Tobert at the start of the game made the task a little harder for the men in gold and blue. Two goals in the first half from Sladie and Tomox put United in charge. Rovers pulled a goal back near the end to give the Brazilians a nervy few moments.

The votes swung the way of the two United goalscorers. Tomox grabbed two votes for his 'any' display with two of the midfield, while Sladie stole the show with an impressive 4 votes. A towering goal from a corner and a superb defensive display earnt him this first MotM of the season. Mardigan, Nathan and Steely also grabbed a vote from their teammates for their displays.

Sladie - 4 votes

Tomox - 2 votes

Mardigan - 1 vote

Nathan - 1 vote

Steely - 1 vote

Match 2

Once again, United saw themselves in a two goal lead, and nearly threw it away at the death. Golden boot contender Sladie grabbed the opener, as he seemingly ran half the length of the pitch to slam a diving header to give United an early lead. Steely doubled the advantage after the break as the Spanish keeper made a howler, presenting the United gaffer with an open net. Bleeders then rattled the crossbar as United pushed for a third. However, Rovers again pulled a goal back near the end to make it nervy for Steely's men.

One man once again dominated the votes. Sladie is quickly becoming a fan and player favourite as he grabbed his second award of the week. A contender for goal of the season, and more sterling defensive work convinced his team mates to give him the MotM vote. Nathan ended up a distant second with 2 votes. Birthday-boy Bleeders grabbed himself a vote, while open-goal-scorer extraordinaire Steely grabbed a vote too.

Sladie - 6 votes

Nathan - 2 votes

Bleeders - 1 vote

Steely - 1 vote

Goal of the Night

The goal of the night votes were only going to go one way. Even the winner voted for himself. Sladie's superb diving header to open the scoring in match 2 drew all the praise from his team mates. Tomox grabbed a single (and probably a sympathy) for his finish in match 1.

Votes

Sladie - 9 votes

Tomox - 1 vote

The 'Fat Ronaldo' Award

As with voting in the past, the team have had the option to vote for one of their own (or anyone else who takes their fancy), who has fallen on hard times, and might not be quite as good as they used to be.

This season, the award has been dubbed the 'Fat Ronaldo' Award. Cheeky Brazilian Ronaldo, has fallen from the high times of winning the World Cup and multiple club titles, to being a round, bouncy thing occasionally seen around Rio de Janeiro.

There was a large spread of votes this week. Someone voted from themselves, the referee earnt a vote for some 'interesting' decisions all over the park and Tobert grabbed his customary votes for various reasons. But the winner was Rovers' keeper, who gifted United their second goal in the second match to effectively seal the game.

Man of the Match

Match 1

A slice of bad luck and a well rounded goal before half time for City game United their first loss of the season. A stirring team talk/bollocking by Tobert roused the men from Brazil to regroup and give it their best in the second half, only to find the German goalkeeper in top form.

The majority of the votes swung towards the United CBs, with last weeks hero Sladie picking up two votes. Match 1 winner Mardigan produced a great display keeping the City front line at bay (apart from the two goals the scored, obv). His gentle Scottish wisdom and words of encouragement surely grabbed him a vote or two.

Votes

Mardigan - 4 votes

Sladie - 2 votes

Steely - 1 vote

Tobert - 1 vote

Match 2

Match 2 saw Steely change the personnel around and bring in Leandro Damaio into the front line, which seemed to do the trick. United raced into an early lead after Tomox's shot was parried by the City keeper to the feet of Jazzy, who made no mistake with the goal at his mercy. A superb one-two between Dan and Steely brought saw Dan spray the ball out wide to Steely, who whipped the ball in onto an onrushing Damaio, who planted his header into the bottom corner. Dan caused havoc once again for the third goal, as his shot at goal saw the keeper parry (again!) into a United players path, but this time Steely was on hand to hammer the ball home.

A big spread of votes came in for the players for match 2. Steely grabbed a vote for a masterful display, while controlling 3 players and snaffling a goal, and another vote for the impressive Mardigan. Team morale officer Tobert grabbed two votes for dominating the centre of the park after he countlessly broke up a City attack and put the United forwards going. The man of the hour was Dantm who, with the newly used Damaio, grabbed a goal and an assist, and kept the forward line ticking. A superb display from the quiet man with the big man.

Votes

Dantm - 4 votes

Tobert - 2 votes

Mardigan - 1 vote

Steely - 1 vote

Goal of the Night

The goal of the night was one sided. Dan voted for Steely's goal, as he was feeling a bit modest, but everyone else voted for the superb one-two, which saw Dan doubling United's lead with a well placed header.

Votes

Dantm - 7 votes

Steely - 1 vote

The 'Fat Ronaldo' Award

Another range of votes for many different subjects. Dan and Tomox getting a bit too close, the touch of Jazz and some good old fashioned FIFA winging grabbed a mention. Steely got two votes for not playing Damaio in match 1, but the winner was the colossal mix up between the United keeper and the defence.
