Sold - I'll give voice attack a trial since voice comands and a scottish accent usually end up like the burniston lift sketch but at least I can give it a go.

Voice attack uses the windows in built speech recognition, which you have to quite thoroughly train before its any good. It works pretty well by all accounts.

The lack of stock for the X-55 is making me have doubts about splurging all that cash on it, given I've no experience with sticks.

I still kinda want it, but I also kinda want the £120 difference between that, and a much more entry level one - lots of people are using the likes of the two Thrustmasters (the T-Flight and the T16000M) which are only £40. I keep telling myself the available buttons will make the difference but the longer I've to wait for it, the more I edge towards getting something in time for the 16th.

Might give it until next weekend then look at other options.

Right, formed a plan. Im off to the Empire, figure I would work for those guys for a bit.

Its a long haul from my position but I have been heading steadily "south" (down on the galactic map, turning view on to factions shows the Empire (red systems) are en mass down there) anyhow so decided to commit. Fuel scoop got, a couple of small upgrades too to lighten the load and increase my jump distance, and away I go.

I had an X52 Pro, upgraded to an X55 and don't regret it.

Had some fun on the epic run (sic) I am attempting.. I managed to arrive at the main cluster of Imperial systems but not without mishap-

Occasionally, even with a fuel scoop, you need to pop in to a station for repairs (interdictions, greedily getting that bit too close when dragging fuel out of a sun..) but on this massive marathon it is so much quicker it pays to avoid them somewhat, at least until I decide my "home base" area and start working on their factions.

I made the error of jumping with 80% fuel only to find it was to a gas giant so no scooping fun for me.. it also had no stations. Do I go back or risk the next..

On I went, and whoops another gas giant and no stations. Now I have only a single system in range.

BLAM once again a gas giant and no stations. Oh dear. Screwed.

Its OK though, a kindly pair of pirates in Cobras jumped in and beat the shit out of me, saving me the problem of looking for some sort of distress function (not seen one yet..?) or the humiliation of self destructing.

Got my insurance and the game respawned me about 7 jumps back, so maxxing my fuel I managed to make it through the bottleneck.

Onwards..

TLDR; Plan ahead! The map is your friend (although I WISH the damn thing would remember my settings, it defaults to "Most economic" rather than "Fastest route").

You know that thing where you scan a system and even the nearby station gives you a small amount of cash for it. Well one of the devs explained quite simply, saying that since planet surfaces, their position, their environment is always in flux, that data is always valuable to a point. So that's why you receive a pat on the back and a relatively small amount of dosh. It seems so obvious now.

Yeah, I remember Braben was mentioning that at some point, so that there's always a reason to go exploring for profit without having to worry about being first or bust. New data just adds knowledge.

Makes a lot of sense too that in the unexplored systems I've seen, there's only ever been one station at most, rather than the several you often find in heavily populated areas. Like they've set up an outpost for study, mining or as a stepping stone to further exploration and colonisation but haven't yet established an exhaustive knowledge of the system.

I imagine that as we get further out from the core systems, there's truly unexplored territory with big bucks involved for revealing that, and hopefully we'll see some gradual expansion when Earth-like worlds are located, with one of those simple, four-bay stations being presumably quick to spin up for such expansion.

Oh for sure but I mean slightly more in the way of even populated areas. That long range stuff makes more sense, but this explains nicely that planets constantly change and that data constantly changes and always needs updating. It was hard for me to see that at first and having that little bit of reasoning adds a lot to something that seemed odd. The thinking was, why am I getting paid for something they must already know. They must know where the planets are already. Especially when its a planet they happen to be orbiting. So it kind of covers that.

I'm starting to feel like I wasted £50 buying into this off the back of all the hype. It just feels like an inpenetrable mess with legitmately the worst tutorial mode I have ever seen in nearly 30 years of gaming. I half want to love it, half want it to fail now. Maybe December 16th will see a tuturial mode that adequately explains how to play this thing, but I'm certainly not holding my breath. Currently feels like a Eurogamer 3.

I agree that the tutorial missions are pretty useless at teaching you anything about the game. Or even at teaching controls well.

I love the game though, especially now that I'm using a HOTAS setup. I did spend hundreds and hundreds of hours playing Frontier though, so it's like going back to something really familiar which has been overhauled and upgraded brilliantly. Not sure how it would feel if I was coming to it without having played any of the previous games.

Really? You paid £50 for it..

I know what you mean about the tutorials, they really are inadequate. And yes, these days we are expected to be at least pointed in the right direction with intro/tutorial sections.

But the main game- so far, for me - is just ace. Ripping through a Viper only to watch him in dismay as he outruns me and jumps to safety made me incredibly angry, but then taking my petty revenge on an Asp who dared to drag me out of frameshift was a perfect frustration antidote.

Its the combat. And the freedom.

Save game wipe or not before release, either way Ill be roaming the galaxy and kicking seven kinds of shit out of NPCs and players alike.

An impenetrable mess? Seems a bit of an exaggeration. I actually don't think the tutorials are that bad, I mean they could be better but I find the 'working stuff out' bit to be part of the charm and reward. For example, I spent half an hour working out how to scan / gather astronomical data the other night, but found it immensely relaxing and rewarding!!

I'm struggling to see what is impenetrable to you; what are you struggling with? You fly a ship about and make your own adventures. That's it. There are no goals, it's a space toybox with some (granted, a bit basic) systems in place to allow you to fight, explore, mine or trade.

I've come away from the tutorials essentially with very little clue HOW to go off and make my own adventures. I still don't know how to fly the ship well and the tutorials don't even seem to touch on things like mining and trade.

The formerly broken travel tutorial now lets you actually come out of hyperspace, but now you just arrive at a sun and it then it doesn't say what to do next. Useless!
