yes that was a peculiar waste of time, like someone pitched Last of the Summer Wine meets Brokeback Mountain.

i finished it just now and did enjoy it but i think because i don't actually own a TV and i only watch shows that have a reputation for being excellent (not saying this to sound like i have good taste; i just pay attention to what other people are talking about because i can't be bothered to invest my time filtering through crap), i had the same problem with this as i did Homeland: it's another glossy, big budget show that takes itself terribly seriously but is pretty dumb and conventional. it's not a great show.

i don't like how they killed the only likeable character either.

Unlike most I actually quite liked Frank and it was fun being part of his schemes. Until episode 11. Fuck.

In general, various players being so involved in things they couldn't fail to be noticed Or cover up is a bit of a weakness, but I suppose its the demands of tv vs reality.

having seen so many people comparing this to the original I thought I'd give that a whirl on netflix as have never seen it.

I know its 20+ years old but can't say I'm enjoying it, its so horribly dated and so stiffly & badly acted - think it may be one of those things your view on depends whether you watched it at the time or not.

Could anyone recognise what shooter Spacey was playing in episodes one ?

Whatever it was he rattled the O and X buttons to fire, and waggled left-right-left-right like a stupid Dalek. It was a bit like that Virtua Fighter game on X-Files that played Sonic ring collecting sounds in the background. And didn't Neighbours have those episodes where they all tried to beat each other on Magic Carpet - with a joystick? People pretending to play videogames, that clearly don't play videogames, on TV always annoy me.

I thought we were going to get a look at it when the PS3 advert was on, but they only showed the XMB before he tromped off.

I think it was Killzone 4 (PS4) though, looks like they fixed the lag.

I remember it being incredible at the time - haven't seen it in the 23 years since.

23 years... depressing.

at the end ;)

The first episode of the UK series is bizarre; far more rubbish than I remember.

I watched it for the first time the other night... it was interesting how Peter Russo seems to be a composite character.

It was a LOT more camp than I expected (the scene in the bank? lol) and it seems the quality of acting in british TV drama has come on a long way since the early 90's. The ad man and his assistant are atrocious.

The Final Cut is almost unwatchable

I thought this was wonderful. A very entertaining re-imagining of the original, and sufficently different to really be its own thing. Yes Spacey didn't charm the camera like Richardson, but his character brought other elements that I enjoyed - he seemed more vulnerable, more creepy, more real somehow. And while some of the plotting seemed a little tabloid, I really admire how the writers managed to bring modernity and a much greater scale to the world. The BBC original looks like a stage production in comparison. Plus I fancied the pants of almost every woman on the show, most of all Russo's long sufferig girlfriend who was absolutely gorgeous. The Homeland Series 2 comparisons are way below the belt. This is quality TV with real class and intelligence. Definately going to keep watching.

Um.... That would be unexpected!

What I mean is in the original every move he made was orchestrating his revenge but in this after the initial 'betrayal' he really is just a scheming politician. Think it loses something because it that.

Rewatching series one of this and it's actually better this time - the politics happened so quickly that a lot of why Francis was doing what was lost on me first time round. There's also some sumptuous little glances and tics in Spacey's performance that I hadn't noticed. It really really deserves a second viewing, especially if you gorged on it like me when it first came out. Super moist about the second series now.

Though social media suggests they turned them on sometime before dropping a press release, Netflix have just revealed a series of audio commentaries recorded by the directors of House of Cards‘ first season.

I just jumped into the first episode, adjusted my audio option and, poof, there was David Fincher. All of the six directors have contributed to the tracks, though I expect Fincher’s name is going to attract the most ears.

This is a great advance for the service. Could Netflix start offering a lot of supplements? Would certainly attract certain subscriber types, wouldn’t you think?

The second season of House of Cards starts streaming on February 14th.
