Game of the Year

  1. Dishonored A wonderfully imagined and consistent world. A lean and concise game in this year of superflab. A mixture of large and more intimate levels which invite countless "what if" experiments as you plan your route through.
  2. Dragon's Dogma Another standout game - lots of fun and the pawn is a brilliant new twist to the genre. As with the winner, a technically excellent game which does not outstay it's welcome but which takes a while to reveal all it's secrets.
  3. Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Only a small amount of new content, but a general sprucing up all round for this perennial classic and proof (if needed) that these games work brilliantly on tablets.
  4. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning A disasterous experience but a super game - it becomes unbalanced simply because of the huge volume of side quests, but the combat is so fast and fluid it never became a chore to play.
  5. Xcom Incredibly tough and nervewracking game. A few tears were shed when Hotlips bit the dust.
  6. The Walking Dead
  7. Fez
  8. Mass Effect 3 Would probably also feature in my roll call of shame, but did provide some excellent moments right up to the last five minutes.
  9. Spec Ops: the line

Game of the Year

  1. Virtue's Last Reward - A sequel to a game that never made it here. Despite some issues with it's saving bug and a couple of minor grievances with the plot, it's a phenomenal game. 30+ hours with only 9 characters really bonds you to them like nothing else.
  2. To the Moon - Only a recent addition to my list but well worthy of it's praise. Some sublime music and a lovely little story and the way it's presented make it well worth the price.
  3. Journey - From the few screenshots I saw, I knew it would be something special and boy was it. Interesting online experience, lovely music and a great way to tell a story with no words.
  4. Borderlands 2 - I didn't expect much after the first game finding it only slightly above average but this really delivered in spades. A ridiculous amount of content and fun with some satisfying gunplay and topped off by a great soundtrack.
  5. Binary Domain - A sleeper hit for a number of people I suspect. Hiding in a generic third person shooter disguise, it has fantastically satisfying gunplay, highly enjoyable bosses and a fairly decent plot. The continual banter from your squadmates is also very enjoyable.
  6. Spec Ops - The Line - Despite some slightly frustrating moments, it's an enjoyable third-person shooter which has a very unique take on the nature of conflict. The gradual development of Walker from start to finish was also really interesting to see.
  7. Dishonored - A game with more hits than misses. Despite a slightly lack-lustre story at times, the gameplay kept me thoroughly entertained all of the way through.
  8. Ys Origins - Precisely the game I'd been hoping for. Same frantic action in a new location with new (albeit occasionally easy) bosses. It's link in with the games in the main series was also very well handled.
  9. Dragon's Dogma - The game I wanted Dragon Age to be. While it lacks in it's story and flow, the combat is supremely satisfying from beginning to end; from fighting the smallest of goblins to the biggest of dragons. If they can tune up some of the lacking elements a bit, the sequel will be outstanding
  10. Katwa Shoujo - A token mention but I felt it had to be made. No doubt much has been said about this elsewhere but it has some rather intriguing moments for me in it regarding disability despite it being essentially a visual novel with erotic scenes (which honestly rather detract). Some interesting characters, wonderful music and great background art. Not for everyone but I enjoyed it.

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. Tales of Xillia
  2. Ni no Kuni
  3. Dead Space 3
  4. Bioshock Infinite

Hall of Shame

  1. 3DS and Vita's lack of RPG's to this point - Granted this is mainly due to them still being young but for me personally, the line up for both currently is a bit weak.
  2. Mass Effect 3's ridiculous ending - Not much to be said. The choice idea wasn't the worst bit for me, it was more down to the entirety of your actions in the 3 games being pointless.
  3. Virtue's Last Reward 3DS Saving Bug - Not being caught is bad enough but then the same bug making it to the EU version despite a delayed release is nonsense.

Game of the Year

  1. Journey - Just a lovely wonderful experience! Brilliant multiplayer implementation, gorgeous art style and I still listen to the OST at least once a week on the way to work :)
  2. The Walking Dead - Despite disappearing save games, a flaky engine and minimal actual gameplay I've never been so attached to characters in a computer game before.
  3. FTL : Faster Than Light - Computer crack. Can't stop playing.
  4. Far Cry 3 - It has a terrible story and some baffling decisions around immersion-breaking elements were made, but there's so much amazing open world fun to be had. I've given up on progressing the story and have turned on the Rakyat just so I can maintain a never-ending back & forth battle for outposts.
  5. Spec Ops - Very brave game to make; I've never had an AI character directly berate me for wallowing in simulated violence before, nor a game question what exactly I'm getting out of playing it. Great stuff and will hopefully lead to more satirical or self-critical games being made.

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. The Last of Us - (although I'd get excited about a post-apocalyptic West End musical if somebody made one)
  2. Half Life 3 - I have a dream.

Hall of Shame

  1. Armed Heroes Online - EGLS directly ripping off Torchlight assets
  2. The War Z - Shady practices all round by Hammerpoint Interactive

Best Online Experience

  1. Journey - The multiplayer implementation is fantastic - you end up having quite emotional experiences with someone you never talk to and never will.

Most Surprising

  1. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare - No game has ever made me laugh so much. And then after the hilarity wears off you find that there's some pretty complex mechanics to master as well!
  2. Mark of the Ninja - I absolutely hated Shank, so this was a really nice surprise as it's a fantastic stealth game.

Best PC Game

  1. FTL : Faster than Light - Addictive, simple, fiendishly difficult!

Best PS3 Game

  1. Journey

Best Download-only Game

  1. Kerbal Space Program - Utterly brilliant PC game. Playing it with a podcast on is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon :)

Game of the Year

  1. The Walking Dead Yes the telltale tool is a bit buggy but no other game this year (or any year) has made me angry, worried and cry like a girl in quite so assured a way.
  2. Spec Ops : The LineLooked like the most generic 3rd person shooter ever - then the storyline kicked in and made every other shooter leave a slightly bitter taste.
  3. FTL - Faster Than LightI liked the look of this simple space rogue like so much I supported it on kickstarter. I thought it would be fun - not the all encompassing time sink it turned out to be - this years indie surprise.
  4. Far Cry 3Could have been top of the list in any other year but a storyline that lost it's way and a HUD designed for A.D.D. suffering 14 yr olds kinda wasted it somewhat.

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. Metro Last LightFingers crossed THQ are still around to publish it :(
  2. Double Fine Adventure My fave genre and fave writers - fingers crossed
  3. Grim DawnAnother project I backed early on - pre kickstarter - lets hope it's as good as Titan Quest

Hall of Shame

  1. Activision/BlizzardMore studios shut, more millions raked in with D3 and WoW

Best Download-only Game

  1. The Walking Dead
  2. FTL
  3. Hotline Miami

I'm not the best person to be doing this because I've lost touch with gaming a bit, and I haven't gotten around to some of the big games of 2012. But I can add a few entries to a few categories.

Game of the Year

  1. The Walking Dead I very recently played all 5 episodes over a few days, and it had a more devastating impact than the comic and the TV show combined. Thoroughly gripping and emotional. Not much of a game, but it would win any award going for "interactive entertainment".
  2. Borderlands 2 Funnest game of the year. Funnest = funniest and most fun to play.
  3. FTL: Faster Than Light Just one more game, this time I'll beat it. Oh shit they knocked out the door control, how am I supposed to put the fires out now? I can't see because the sensors are broken! Oh fuckfuckfuck--
  4. Mass Effect 3 Yes, everyone feels stung by the ending, which makes a mockery of the themes, goals and subtext of the entire trilogy. But that makes us forget what a majestic experience the rest of the game was.
  5. Rock Band Blitz What's that, you say? An addictive and compelling excuse to play the hundreds of songs in my Rock Band library again? Yes please.
  6. Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition An odd choice, because I soon graduated to the PC version and never looked back. But it introduced me to Minecraft (as it did for a few million people) and Minecraft has dominated most of the year for me. So let's call Minecraft a 2012 game.

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. Grand Theft Auto V Five (as the logo puts it)
  2. Tomb Raider
  3. Dead Space 3
  4. Bioshock Infinite
  5. The Walking Dead season 2 If they make it.

Hall of Shame

  1. Curiosity: What's Inside the Cube? Started off as an intriguing Molyneux big-brain idea. Soon became apparent that it's just a promotion platform for the Project Godus kickstarter. The cube hasn't evolved at all, and who gives a shit what's inside it?
  2. Rich old men using Kickstarter to raise money for games they should be funding by traditional means
  3. The Pinball Arcade on consoles I love Farsight Studios' simulations of real pinball tables... but they proved incompetent at releasing them on XBLA. Tables arrived months after iOS/Android, then stopped coming out altogether. They kept having their DLC rejected by Microsoft, then couldn't release DLC at all when the publisher went bust.
  4. Mass Effect 3 ending Three choices, and none of them are what the player wanted. Three ending cutscenes, almost identical except for the colour of the fireworks show. But worst of all it made everyone look bad: fans displayed an obnoxious sense of entitlement when they demanded a better ending, and Bioware lost their integrity when they made one. And the tweaked ending was probably worse! All the same thematic blunders are still there, just with more bloated cutscenes.

Really hard this, as I didn't play much this year and most I played were actually games from 2010-2011. I haven't even played some forum favourites like Spec Ops, Walking Dead or Hotline Miami yet (they're securely stashed away in my Steam pile though).

Game of the Year

  1. Max Payne 3
  2. Journey
  3. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
  4. Far Cry 3
  5. Legend of Grimrock
  6. Gravity Rush

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. GTA V - Without a shadow of a doubt. GTA is still one of my favourite series and the promise of this being the biggest ever is really exciting. Hopefully this will be the next-gen equivalent of San Andreas, my 2nd favourite game of all time.
  2. The Last of Us - Naughty Dog at its best if the trailers are anything to go by.
  3. Luigi's Mansion 2 - Loved the original on the GameCube, I just hope they don't fuck it up.
  4. Adventure - The first kickstarter game I backed (Tim Schafer / Double Fine), can't wait to see how it shapes up.
  5. Watch Dogs - The announcement was one of the more exciting things of an otherwise dull E3. Hopefully Ubisoft pulls it off.

Hall of Shame

  1. No next gen consoles - The 360 and PS3 are seriously long in the tooth by now, and the gap with the PC gets larger and larger. The Wii U aims to draw in players by new control methods/concepts rather than raw power so that's no solution either. Multiplatform games need to be watered down on the console side, having a negative impact on gaming experience. At the same time, they can't stretch too far on PC because they have to take the consoles into account. It's time for the next leap. In fact, I've been saying that for 2 years now. Sort it out guys.
  2. SSX - The first trailer looked alarmingly bad, but some ace PR work by EA in the months afterwards really tricked me into believing this was the game we were actually waiting for. On arrival, it turned out to be terrible. The developers clearly misunderstood what made the first 3 games great. I felt cheated.
  3. The Last Guardian - Still no releasedate, and the scarce reports seem to point at the game being firmly stuck in development hell. So now we have a director who no longer works for Sony but does some stuff for this game on 'consultancy basis'; (isn't this PC talk for 'I'm out, but if you got a question, here's my mobile number'), various studios trying to tie the pieces together and make the damn thing work and reports of more technical difficulties and Sony not wanting to commit to a 2013 releasedate. How on Earth can this ever come out good - if it ever comes out in the first place? Good Cognac and Whisky need time to mature, but this one has probably gone sour under the cork by now.
  4. Region issues - The 3DS (and XL) are the first region locked handhelds in ages, eShop and PSN Store releases are often lagging months behind the US (Cave Story+ and Retro City Rampage to name 2 recent examples). The world is getting smaller all the time, why are we still supposed to deal with this shit?
  5. Digital download pricing - Digital download offers a lot of benefits, especially on handhelds. However, charging more than average retail prices for a game that you can't trade in, which doesn't involve any physical manufacturing or shipping of goods, which has at least 2 layers of middlemen cut out? Come on.

Best Technical Achievement

  1. PS Vita - A lovely bundle of joy, I'm still amazed how much Sony managed to cram in the little machine. Shame it isn't selling better, I'd love the third parties going wild on it.
  2. Max Payne 3 - Animation, sound, storytelling, wow. Stunningly beautiful.
  3. Journey - Effective use of design, lighting and sound elevates a 'push forward to win' game into a wonderful, dream-like experience. I just wish the white robe was available as DLC, I want to fly forever (But I can't find all those dinky pickups).
  4. Far Cry 3 - Stunningly beautiful on PC. So amazing how far we've come.
  5. Halo 4 - The last few launch 360s left must finally melt their cores to instant RRoD when they have to handle this. Incredible that they manage to squeeze such graphics out so late in the life of an old machine.

Best Online Experience

  1. Journey - The feeling of another player helping you out, or just walking together with the limited communication is amazing. You're always glad to see somebody gliding into your game, even if they're just passing by.

Best Audio

  1. Max Payne 3 - From the voice acting to the effects and the soundtrack, everything sounds great.
  2. Journey - Fantastic use of music and creature sounds to further enhance the dreamy and dramatic atmosphere of the game. It stirs at the right moments, while droning out to the background during the more pedestrian bits. Amazing.
  3. Far Cry 3 - From the opening sequence onwards, the music and sound pulls you right in. Extra creds for the voice acting of the main villain, who is truly scary for a change.

Best 3DS Game

  1. VVVVVV - Never heard of it before, picked it up cheap a few weeks ago and absolutely love it.
  2. New Super Mario Bros 2 - I didn't rate the original NSMB games very highly, but this one was genuinely enjoyable.
  3. Resident Evil Revelations - Didn't get far yet, but I really liked what I saw so far.
  4. EscapeVektor - Bit of a slow starter, but glad I persevered. Although I should have gone for the PS Vita version.

Most Surprising

  1. XCOM: Enemy Unknown - This had everything going for it to be rubbish, and it turned out to be great.
  2. Trails Evolution - It promised to be great, but the developers really outdid themselves by even throwing in an editor that actually works on a console, resulting in masses of cool user generated tracks and game variations. Wonderful.
  3. 3DS XL Free Game Promotion - Nintendo giving recent, full price games away for free!?
  4. No next gen consoles - I really expected them to be on E3 this year.
  5. PC Gaming - I've been a console gamer for years, but wanted to play Legend of Grimrock and got frustrated with the old consoles delivering subpar performance. Set up my old PC, and it worked wonderfully well despite being a couple of years old. The old frustrations of tweaking INI files and faffing about with drivers is also (largely) gone. So after an upgrade and hooking it up to a big screen, it's now actually my most used gaming platform. And Steam Sales! Dirt cheap games! Yeah!

Best PC Game

  1. Legend of Grimrock - I loved games like Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master as a kid, so seeing the genre revived and revamped was actually enough to bring back my PC from retirement and turn it into a game machine again.
  2. Xcom - technically not PC only, but I feel playing this with mouse & keyboard makes it a completely different experience so I'll put it down here anyway.
  3. FTL: Faster than Light - Cool concept, really clever little game.

Best PS3 Game

  1. Journey - I gushed enough about this game yet, so it should be clear by now.

Best PS Vita Game

  1. Gravity Rush
  2. WipEout 2048
  3. MotorStorm RC
  4. Mutant Blobs
  5. Everybody's Golf

Best Xbox 360 Game

  1. Trials Evolution - Fantastic gameplay as usual, but the new setting, levels and variety in gameplay makes it even better than its predecessor. Everything I hoped it to be - and more.
  2. Mark of the Ninja - Surprise hit, I disregarded it as another funny flash-style platformer but took note when people here kept going on about it. Excellent game.
  3. Halo 4 - I expected 343 to fuck it up, but they did a good job on the game. At least on the singleplayer campaign, as I don't care about the multiplayer at all. Graphically amazing and it plays well. Although after so many Halo games, I can't say I feel very excited about it anymore.
  4. Forza Horizons - Technically amazing and very playable. I don't really dig the whole festival bullshit setting, but it's an accomplished title and the races are good.
  5. Fez - Inventive game, really enjoyable to play. Although it's very easy to loose track of what you're doing, where you have been and where you're supposed to go. For once a game might actually have improved by being a little more linear. Still great though.

Best Download-only Game

  1. Journey
  2. Trials Evolution
  3. Mark of the Ninja
  4. FTL: Faster than Light
  5. VVVVVV - I know it's an older game, but it only came out this year for the 3DS :P

-edit- The No WYSIWYG editor fucks up my quotes // Edit2: Seems to be Chrome on Mac borking it up.

Game of the Year

  1. Journey My playthrough of Journey was so beautiful, so timeless, so perfect, that I've not gone back to it for fear of altering the memory. I found my companion early on; I sensed it was their first time too as our initial baby steps were awkward and our timing flawed. We slowly made our way through this magical land, occasionally beeping thanks and warning as the situation demanded. Oh, the things we saw! The experiences! Always side by side, watching each others back. Then, right towards the end, we lost each other. They were gone, my friend had left me to complete this journey alone and I felt hollow, empty and unfulfilled. I looked back one last time, praying to see them on the horizon. YES! There they were, cartwheeling in view. We were reunited and beeped again and again in celebration and finished side by side. At least, that's how the game panned out from where I was sitting. For all I know, my partner could have been cursing my ineptitude the whole way through, furiously beeping at my every move and looking for the first chance to get rid of me. Such is the mystery in this utterly unique and captivating experience.
  2. The Walking Dead I've never enjoyed a point and click, despite trying numerous times, and I didn't enjoy the T.V show, sticking with it just to try and figure out how they managed to make a show about zombies so fucking boring. I frankly have no idea why I gave this a punt, but I'm so, so glad I did. Believable characters, relationships that matter, decisions that stick with you days after you've made them and an ending that was still making me feel weepy on the walk to work the morning after. Genuinely feels like the start of something new and exciting in gaming, and it's not too often we get to say that.
  3. Rock Band Blitz Proof that watering something down doesn't always fuck it up, this took my beloved Frequency, removed a button, added some silly coin business, and yet somehow managed to keep the soul. Score chasing was as compelling as ever and trying different combinations of power ups to eke the most from the track was always fun and often unpredictable. Rediscovering my Rock Band library was a joy, as was checking the store to find stuff that I missed, and it still managed to produce those magical moments of disconnect where the inputs bypass your brain and go straight to your fingers.
  4. Ridge Racer Contender for the Most Misunderstood Game of All Time, Ridge on the Vita inexplicably sat right at the bottom of Metacritic for the launch titles as critics struggled to adapt to it's unusual structure. But for those willing to throw themselves into it, this provided the purest, fastest and most beautiful arcade racing of the year. Also; top music. I had 'you can hear the sound....of the whole world watching' looping round my head for the entire summer.
  5. Resident Evil Revelations Treading the line between survival horror and third person shooter like no other game in the series, this provided some truly amazing visuals and an utterly batshit storyline as well as tense and involving action and a neat alternative to The Mercenaries mode. Probably my second favourite Resi.
  6. Motorstorm RC Tapping into that same 'One More Go' mentality as Trials and Meat Boy, RC is jam packed with a neat variety of events and some truly compulsive medal challenges. Having your friends ghosts race alongside you and taunt you with their superhuman times is a clever touch, but it's the control that really shines through here. You're never in any doubt that you could do that little bit better next time...
  7. Mark of the Ninja Never letting you rest on your laurels, Mark of the Ninja is constantly introducing new and interesting challenges to change the way you approach it's levels. The visuals are just brilliantly designed, consistent with the stealth mechanics and letting you know the right amount of information. Most importantly, this succeeds in making you feel like an unstoppable sneaky murder machine; leaping over an enemies field of sight before silently stabbing them in the back was one of my moments of the year.
  8. Nintendoland Yeah, it's a collection of minigames, and yeah, one or two are a bit poor, but Nintendoland contains some absolute crackers that wouldn't look out of place as stand alone arcade titles. Some lovely proof-of-concept uses of the game pad and all wrapped up in lovely, nostalgic Nintendoeyness. Also really good fun on your own which is pretty rare for a game like this.
  9. Trials Evolution Building on everything that made the original so much fun and adding perhaps the most comprehensive track editor ever seen, this provided plenty of the restarting cycles-of-self-hate and euphoric air punching that make an essential arcade title. I still find the style a little off putting and the music is truly awful (except for that one track), but there's no denying that this is a just simply excellent video game.
  10. Dyad Very nearly made me sick after a few glasses of wine and sometimes it can all get a bit too much, but Dyad tapped into my love of play influencing audio influencing visuals. It's mental, difficult and more than a little disorientating but when it clicks it's bloody beautiful.

Game of the Year

  1. Journey Totally memorable and unique, whilst retaining distinctly gamey mechanics. Also a feast for the eyes, and short enough to enjoy again from start to finish in a single evening.
  2. Mass Effect 3 Fittingly epic conclusion, with emotional moments.
  3. Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes Best Lego game, I've decided.
  4. Rock Band Blitz The game was fine, but I miss the complexity of charts from Unplugged. Boo-urns.
  5. Sonic CD Honestly, I haven't played any other 2012 games in 2012, so it's fifth best by default. Yes, it's a remake and it came out in 2012 on the PC. Shrug. You asked.

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. The Last Guardian If it comes out, ever.
  2. Grand Theft Auto V Bound to be amazing.
  3. Animal Crossing: New Leaf I dunno, I'm not especially excited by it, but I reckon I'll be glued to it for a year if it's anything like the last one.
  4. Half-Life 3 Sure, why not?
  5. Broken Sword 5 I can't think of anything else coming out that I really want. Is it even due out this year? I might amend this if I think of more.

Hall of Shame

  1. Origin Account got hacked. Hateful piece of software.
  2. Uplay Bollocks (and unsecure) thing getting in the way of playing a PC game bought through a completely different service.
  3. Mass Effect 3 For the awful original ending and forced multiplayer 'incentive'.
  4. Most games journalism In general, continues to be a bit shit, corrupt and pointless.
  5. PS Vita memory card prices LOLWUT?

Best Technical Achievement

  1. Journey Beautiful graphics made from 100% pure refined Art. Online stuff is seamless and clever.
  2. Sonic CD Re-made in a new engine by one bloke and so faithful he sold to Sega for official release. Impressive work.

  1. Journey Seamless and mysterious, something new, relaxing, leisurely.
  2. Steam Continues to be the best online portal / buying / community / wishlist / thing ever.
  3. Mass Effect 3 Co-op is always preferable to competitive. This is the only other 2012 game I've played online.

Best Audio

  1. Mass Effect 3 Some amazing music in this. I love the gentle piano-y theme.
  2. Rock Band Blitz Not the rockiest of Rock Band games, but a good mix of music.
  3. Sonic CD Japanese soundtrack for the win.
  4. Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes John Williams Superman theme is just perfect. Perfect.

Damn, just typed this all out and lost it!

Here is the list for my GOTY without reasons :(

EDIT: Edited in my reason for my no.1 spot.

Game of the Year

  1. Spec Ops the line
Was only alerted to this due to the thread on here occasionally being bumped. Lots of spoiler postings and talk of the game catching you by surprise got me intrigued. So with some spare gaming time over Christmas I picked it up in game for a total bargain of £13. I started playing it and at first it all seemed pretty much a by the numbers cover shooter (although thankfully had been alerted to this via the forum thread so didn’t give up!), however soon it soon became apparent that all was not well in the post apocalyptic Dubai, and that this was a game that was challenging your very reason for wanting to place yourself in such a scenario, even if it was just a game! The further down the rabbit hole you go, the more you become implicated in the developments that are taking place, until you reach the end and you wonder how it all came to this! Amazing game!
  2. Journey
  3. Max Payne 3
  4. Farcry 3

Surprised how few games I loved last year.

Game of the Year

  1. Far Cry 3 This shouldn't be number one. It's got a horribly intrusive HUD, there's not enough to do (following icons on maps to find "hidden" items doesn't count), and there's no post-game when a post-game should have been one of the first things on their list. That sounds like a lot but a bit of redirection in the last month of development could have made this an all time classic. As it stands it's merely brilliant. It's also the game I had the most fun with this year, so it's my number 1.
  2. Spelunky 360 With this and FTL, it's been the year of the rogue-light. What makes Spelunky so brilliant is that it's incredibly unforgiving, but it's always avoidable. Sometimes the game seems unfair, then you have a quick think and realise you were naïve. Then you learn from it and play again. You'll probably make the same mistake but you'll play again. And again.
  3. Hidden in Plain Sight Was this 2011? I don't care, it's amazing. Absolutely stonking local multiplayer game that can't be explained effectively. You just have to try it. Centres around each player controlling a character on screen among many, and having to work out who is AI and who is human. Endlessly tactical and hilarious.
  4. Borderlands 2 Surely the least grindy grinding game ever made. The tiresome repetition of the original has made way for not-tiresome repetition. Great mechanics and stupid amounts of game. Getting a legendary weapon is an amazing feeling (and suitably rare). Also, needs to be mentioned how funny it is. "Sarcastic slab" still makes me smile when I think of it.
  5. FTL I've only put a few hours into this so far but it clearly deserves to be here. Again, I'm not gonna repeat stuff others have said. It's great. It kept me up until 1:30 last night when I promised myself I'd sleep at midnight. An hour and a half seemed to last ten minutes. Buy it.
  6. Prototype 2 There's a lot of reasons Prototype 2 didn't really make any mark. Most obviously it was very similar to the first game, and that game didn't do particularly well. It's a fantastic videogame, though. The biggest problem with the first game, the close quarters combat, has been fixed, and it's been improved in just about every other way, too. Some people say it's a little basic looking but I've never seen that, I think it looks great and just as importantly, is very smooth. The amount of stuff going off is crazy. It's not perfect, they didn't do enough with the world they made and some of the side missions are a bit repetitive, but it doesn't stop this being one of the best open world games around. It's certainly way better than inFamous ever has been.
  7. Max Payne 3 Playing this in front of him convinced my friend to get a PS3, but he didn't even get past the first cutscene. Unskippable cutscenes are a sin. I showed some friends chapter 6. I think it's over 5 minutes before you can play, on a chapter I'd already finished. Ridiculous. Also, multiplayer is disappointingly rubbish.
That said, the main game is excellent, and as many have said the airport + Tears was an amazing moment. It's a shame nothing original was attempted, though. Every other shooter at least tries something different to make it stand out.
  8. Hotline Miami A bit glitchy and a bit too repetitive, but that music, and that violence. A lot of fun.
  9. Mark of the Ninja A wonderfully made game which is close to perfect. My natural aversion to stealth games keeps it this low, but for it to make this list at all is unexpected.

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

(For me this is my most disappointing games, these are in no way shameful.)

Hall of Shame

  1. Journey I didn't like it. I can appreciate why people did, but I didn't like the music, and I didn't like the atmosphere. It just didn't sit with me. I'm all for 'experience' games, but this experience didn't do it for me aside from a couple of moments, which was a shame as I was really looking forward to it.
  2. Forza Horizon I hate the damage model, simple as that. I realise you're not meant to grind barriers or smash into people, but I want it to be convincing when I do. This put the nail in the coffin of all non-arcade racers for me. At least I know what I like now.
  3. Tokyo Jungle Really didn't get on with this, it just felt so cheap and I hate games with highly stringent time-limits when they don't feel appropriate. I played it a fair amount, I just wasn't having any fun. It reminded me of the first Lost Planet a little, although that game was far more forgiving with its life draining mechanic.

Best Technical Achievement

  1. Halo 4 How

Best Online Experience

  1. FIFA 13 The 10v10 Rllmuk BAP league is in its 5th year and as good as ever. Thursday night never fails to excite me. This is as good as gaming gets.

Game of the Year

  1. Spec Ops: The Line - Like Nier did for RPGs, this shooter questions your motivations and leaves you thinking long after the game is over.
  2. Dragon's Dogma - The best Capcom game since Clover.
  3. Far Cry 3 - Not as atmospheric as its predecessor, but heaps of fun and the best 'AAA' game this year by a long shot.
  4. Sleeping Dogs - GTA without the checkpointing annoyances, better combat and a likeable protagonist.
  5. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Outstayed its welcome, but gave me plenty of hours of enjoyment before the boredom set in.

Most Wanted Game of 2013

  1. The Last Guardian
  2. The Last of Us

Hall of Shame

  1. SSX - This looked like soulless shit, then we were all given hope by some good EA spin. Turned out to be soulless shit.
  2. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - I loved the first game. Too many glitches and crazy difficulty spikes killed this for me.

Game of the Year

  1. Journey - It's a shame it came out at the start of the year as these types of games can easily collapse under cynicism when the experience isn't fresh in your mind. A magical, emotional and beautiful game. Don't want to be caught saying that kind of bullshit! Well, I did.
  2. Super Hexagon - A game where you can clearly notice yourself getting better. Each new challenge seems impossible and when beaten you feel empowered in the face of the next beast.
  3. FTL - Something about the tiny detailed sprites and minimal music really unlock your imagination. Adventure reports in the thread prove it.
  4. Tribes: Ascend - The best way to capture a flag is at 300 KPH.
  5. Kid Icarus: Uprising - Slightly clunky controls but oh so Japanese in its mechanical depth and enjoyment of mastery. Brainless great story too!
  6. Street Fighter X Tekken - Sexy long combos and teamwork made this game fantastic while it was fresh. Hopefully balance changes will resurrect the poor thing.

Game of the Year

  1. Xenoblade Chronicles Absolutely consuming from start to finish. I can count the number of RPGs that I have finished in 20 years of gaming on one hand, let alone a JRPG. The battle system was excellent with as much depth as you wanted. The environments were stunning on the whole. A truely magnificent game.
  2. Fez A game that I was hugely anticipating that delivered on the promise.
  3. Faster Than Light Well this was quite a surprise. Not a big fan of space games so passed this by initially. Glad I eventually gave it some time. No game this year has had the same level of focus from me as you go from battle to battle.
  4. Pinball FX2 Again, not a genre that I have tradiationally enjoyed but this just gripped me. The variety in tables and the excellent learning curve on most of them meant that I have spent more time playing this in 2012 than I thought I ever would on a pinball game.
  5. Rayman Jungle Run It has been a great year for mobile gaming but this hs to be the pick of the bunch. Beautiful, soundd great and played wonderfully on a phone. A truly remarkable achievement.
  6. Persona 3 Portable It must have been the year of the RPG for me because this just blew me away on the second attempt. I didn't click on the first go but did on the second attempt. The persona fusing and crafting and social link elements make this stand out for me. Looking forward to picking up P4G soon.
  7. Mass Effect 3 Overall, the game delivered, and let's not forget that it was facing huge expectation.
  8. Dungeon Village I have loved a lot of Kairosoft's games but this is the pick of the bunch for me. The town development was really well done and complimented the adventuring excellently.
  9. Little big planet 2 Got this on PSN plus and despite not enjoying LBP, the sequal somehow worked much better for me. Great to play in co-op with the wife and daughter too.
  10. Forza Horizon Both Forza and Far cry I still have to play a lot more of, hence their low position right now but both show great potential. Forza is the first racing game that I have played in ages that feels great but also fresh
  11. Far Cry 3 Just one or 2 moments give this game its deserved spot in the top 10. Can't wait to play some more.

Superstarbeejay's 'not played enough yet to judge' of the year, but looking good

  1. Hotline Miami
  2. Spec ops: The line
  3. Walking Dead
  4. Borderlands 2
  5. Spelunky
