To some extent although demand for PS5 seems greater judging by eBay prices both here and in the States - traditionally Microsoft's strongest two markets. This despite the fact there are many more PS5's out there in the first place.

Yep that's also completely fair and probably shouldn't be a surprise.  The worst selling mainline Playstation (the 3) still outsold the best selling xbox (360) world wide.

Why can't Nintendo just make a proper box under the telly instead of this gimmick

Would make sense, they did the same for the Wii... call it a Switch Mini and be done with it. Sell it for $149.

Then you have a main hybrid model, a handheld only and a console only model (which is the budget option for people who only play at home). Software sales is where they make most of their money.... slap some torrented ROMs on a disk and get rich.

Of course... you carry the momentum of the last generation into the new generation. If Xbox would flip the coin it won't be before 2023-2024. But personally I don't expect that too happen this generation. By the game Game Pass is mainstream Sony will have its own competitor and will be pushing it.

It’s mad that Xbox One is the only Xbox that wasn’t the worst selling console of its generation.

Actually I guess the original Xbox that they killed because it was underperforming outsold the Dreamcast and maybe the GameCube.

The 360 comfortably outsold the PS3 up until halfway through that generation and would have walked it had Microsoft not inexplicably decided to get rid of most of their first-party studios. Most people buy consoles to play games they want to play, not because of some irrational brand loyalty.

Wasn’t that only the case in the UK and USA though? The PS3 was ahead from much earlier than that across the rest of Europe and we all know how the 360 went down in Japan.

Correct. It launched later but outsold the 360 in every year it was on the market globally iirc.
Still a massive money sink for Sony, unlike the PS4 which is the most profitable console to date (in 2018 alone it made more money than the losses of the PS3 era and the profits of the PS2 era combined).

the OG Xbox sold around 24mil with the GameCube behind at 21mil and Dreamcast at around 10 I think.
So they technically came second, but really, with PS2 at 160 million or something, they all lost.

I was work on Crackdown 2 around the time of the great Xbox 1st party cull. Kinect, motion control and Netflix were king in their eyes and they pivoted that way.
IMO, it’s one of the biggest market misread blunders ever, and I feel I’m still waiting on a real tangible turn tbh.

The X360 was successful enough in its 2 primary markets that it even managed to outsell the Wii by the end of its run in both hardware and software in those 2 markets and outsold the PS3 by ~50%. This generation wasn't anywhere near as much of a swing back in the other direction so hope springs eternal at Microsoft HQ.

The original Xbox was comfortably in 2nd place in both those markets too.

Now if Microsoft could figure out how to appeal to non-Anglophones, they might actually stand a chance globally too (but that's an observation from over 15 years ago, so...)

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

Nintendo's Quarterly Results came out this morning. They shipped 11.57 million Switches in that time (up 7.1% year on year) taking them to 79.87 million LTD. Animal Crossing sold an additional 5.14 million taking that to 31.18 million in 9 months.

And some other LTD numbers:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 33.41M
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 22.85M
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 21.45M
Pokémon Sword/Shield - 20.35M
Super Mario Odyssey - 20.23
Super Mario Party - 13.82M
Pokémon: Let's Go! - 13.00
Splatoon 2 - 11.90M
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 9.82M
Ring Fit Adventure - 8.68M

Edit: Animal Crossing is the 15th best selling game of all time and it did it in just 9 months.

Wonder how much of the software sales have been boosted by sub-£2 games on eshop?

I was just thinking that. Do they ever clarify what software sales means?

It's like charts not including digital sales which seems ridiculous these days.

Probably not massively if much at all, you only have to look at the big sellers to see it’s not made up of that stuff.

Sales of e-shop exclusive games aren't counted in the software sales you see on their website. Software sales are the sales of games that are available both physical+digital.

Bump. It was close enough to keep both companies honest, and that's what we need for every gen.

Lots - those games above are a mere 210m sales. The big difference is that the 3DS was out for much much longer.

Would be really interested in the sales figures for the big indies on the eShop. Enter the Gungeon has sold over a million copies on Switch, and I imagine the likes of Stardew Valley have done even better.

Sony's numbers. Because ResetEra always has ridiculously comprehensive posts, I'll just link to that:
https://www.resetera.com/threads/sony-q3-fy2020-oct-dec-results-ps5-4-5m-ps4-1-4m-ltd-114-9m-record-year-for-playstation-highest-quarterly-revenue-in-video-game-history.372366/

Key figures: the highest quarterly revenue in videogame history for any platform holder at almost 23 billion dollars, over 3 billion profit despite launching a new console sold at a loss, which is a record as well, and 4.5 million PS5's sold (equal to PS4) despite launching in a pandemic. PS4 now at 115 million units sold. PS+ close to 50 million members. 87% of PS5 users are subscribers to PlayStation Plus. Miles Morales has sold over 4 million copies as of end of December.

Sounds like somebody sold less units than Nintendo again. :hat:

They did but revenue and profit are all that matter for these companies. That goes for Nintendo as well and is the reason MS doesn't even mention units sold. It's all 'bout the money. It's all 'bout the dum dum da da dum dum.

MS don’t mention it because they always come last by some margin, if they were beating Sony or Nintendo they’d let us know, I’m sure.
