The PlayStation 5 has broken past two million sales in the UK.

It is the fourth fastest home console to reach the figure, matching the PS3 but behind the PS4 (No.3), the PS2 (No.2) and Nintendo Wii (No.1). All data is courtesy of GfK.

The console's performance has been held back due to stock shortages. Nevertheless, it is the most lucrative console to reach two million sales, having generated £919 million. By comparison, Wii had generated £358 million at two million sales, PS4 £700 million and Xbox One (the previous highest) £726 million.

Clearly Sony are doing something right with the console. I'm actually surprised how much revenue the Xbox One has generated - which in comparison to the PS4 was something of a flop.

Meanwhile more interestingly the ongoing acquisition of Activision by MS has revealed some insight into how GamePass is doing for MS:-

https://www.trueachievements.com/n51422/xbox-game-pass-yearly-revenue-3-billion

Nearly three billion dollars. Wow. Perhaps an indication that a no console future is perhaps the most profitable way forward. Probably why they don't bother releasing sales numbers of consoles anymore.. they are now just another gateway into the platform and largely irrelevant other than a tool to do that - low barrier to entry.

I can understand why Sony's console sales are so high really.. It's the only current gen device you can get to play their games. Single entry point (other than the PS4 of course!).

I know Sony are starting to move into the PC space but its at a glacial pace TBH. Be interesting to see where we are in another 4-5 years!

The same thought crossed my mind.

It's even worse in reality because I rarely see PS5 consoles that are not part of a bundle, first it was Horizon now it is Fifa bundles.

Splatoon 3 still on top and solid sales for the Switch port of Automata. Meanwhile hardware sales are coming back down to earth for everyone before we head into the Christmas rush in a few weeks time.

When it’s currencies devaluing against the dollar driving the increase, you’d expect the US price to hold firm. Though they’re not immune to inflation at present either.

New week and it seems the Switch is suffering hardware shortages according to quite a few reports. Meanwhile the PS5 is up once more but while it passed sales of the Wii U some time ago, it is now beginning to lag behind the Vita. Let's see how the Christmas season goes this year for Sony.

The Switch seems to have gotten some more stock this week and has gone up. PS5 as well which is pretty significant seeing as Sony last year didn't seem able to ship enough PS5's to Japan which lead to some dreadfull sales numbers. These numbers show that won't be the case for this Christmas.

The Switch seems to have gotten some more stock this week and has gone up. PS5 as well which is pretty significant seeing as Sony last year didn't seem able to ship enough PS5's to Japan which lead to some dreadfull sales numbers. These numbers show that won't be the case for this Christmas.

If the PS5 really isn't stock constrained, then I think it's interesting that even with stock the PS5 is now running at higher sales than last year they're still behind year to date. Maybe it was very restricted earlier in the year and it'll continue to catch up. But XB is up 2 or 3 times over last year (admittedly from and to much smaller numbers).

Xbox is still struggling in Japan then... :) However I think its doing a  bit better than previous incarnations of Xbox? In particular the Series S which could be maybe down to having a great design and form factor for Japanese homes.

Its interesting that physical console boxes are not the only mechanism to play games these days so for example an Xbox console is not the only way to play Xbox content and many maybe playing games on the PC too or mobile phone etc so could cannibalise console sales themselves. So I do wonder how much console sales themselves actually matter these days in terms of judging the success of one thing over another... Although saying that Nintendo are smashing it in Japan.

Suppose this topic is about physical consoles sales though...

Between the fact that PS Plus numbers have pretty clearly clearly hit a ceiling at 50 million - well below half the number of PlayStation consoles out there - and Game Pass growth already starting to underperform targets, I feel like the predictions for an industry dominated by subscription services are looking decidedly shaky.

Yeah, can you imagine if Sony added all first releases day one to the service, like MS? Only Sony actually have first party releases, the numbers would likely shoot up but it’s not something I think they’d want to do given the numbers for their big titles, and Nintendo clearly aren’t arsed.

Just so many channels to play these days I guess. Irrespective of how much hardware is out there its not clear how many are active bits of kit or just playing Fortnite/FIFA/CoD etc or other FTP games.

Turns out money grabbing does alienate the customer base.

Still, at least they can say they get the most money in with the dearest console even if sales arent doing well!

Sales are doing well though. PS5 is the best-selling console in the US and Europe and the only reason it isn't outpacing the PS4 is due to supply constraints. In terms of software they didn't have any major releases, but Q3 will be very different with Ragnarok and Modern Warfare 2. Wouldn't be surprised to see them break the Q3 revenue record as well.

I suspect game subscriptions are going to be one of the first things that goes when people cut back on discretionary spending. Games last for fucking ever in comparison to TV series, and (I would argue) less likely to be a shared experience with other people in your household.
