Sales are doing well though. PS5 is the best-selling console in the US and Europe and the only reason it isn't outpacing the PS4 is due to supply constraints. In terms of software they didn't have any major releases, but Q3 will be very different with Ragnarok and Modern Warfare 2. Wouldn't be surprised to see them break the Q3 revenue record as well.

Flat sales with less supply constraint suggests sales arent doing as well as expected doesn’t it?

Fair point on the software and of course they will break the record as the prices are so high and some big games out + PS4 sales will be bolstering the numbers and revenue

Indeed. It will be interesting to see how the new God Of War sells.. and what the divide is between PS4 and PS5 sales. I expect Sony will be wanting to hold onto that huge PS4 installed base for as long as they can.

Is the subscriber shrinkage also seen over on Xbox?

With the pandemic boom of home entertainment, I'd absolutely not be surprised if it's shrinks with things moving on.

Game Pass subscriptions grew 28pc in the most recent fiscal year, which should put them on around 30-32 million now.

It’s a decent number but again that is less than 50pc of all the Xbox consoles sold that can use it, and that figure includes PC as well - for a service that MS have been pushing as the basis for their entire videogames business for years, at very attractive pricing, I’d argue that they would probably have hoped for greater penetration of their own user base by now.

Not really because they still sell every PS5 they make. Now that they're ramping up production for the holidays you'll see a massive Q3 jump. In fact, if Sony hits its targets (and they actually expect to exceed them) PS5 will outpace PS4 next year.

I believe Christopher Dring - who is the UK sales guy from GI.biz - said that most people will buy the PS5 version of cross-gen games and that PS4 owners are willing to wait until they get their hands on a PS5 instead of buying the game on PS4. I believe the Forbidden West split was 70-30 in favour of the PS5 and that was when PS5 was harder to get.

That's a claim that basically ignores Switch - which is is certainly larger as a total userbase, quite often larger on a monthly unit sales basis, and only mostly behind on revenue because it's a lot cheaper.

Thats my point tho, year on year they are producing more (noted with their production time being significantly higher for same sales window) and yet sales are flat = they are not selling everyone they can make.

You can buy one without issue these days, CEX are offering well below RRP to buy one etc.

Think the prices have crept back up again CEX are offering near full RRP for them. They are still hard to find. Or at least there is still a market for the scalpers to exploit it would seem.

Yeah and there is of course the difference between revenue and profit as well.

I think PS5 sales are encouraging and certainly as we head towards Christmas with a new COD and God of War they should do really well, as will Nintendo with a new Pokémon, although no doubt MK8 Deluxe will outsell it

And this is why MS will not pull CoD from PS consoles unless it absolutely has too. Still making $$$s from each one of those sales to PS owners. Think MS's strategy these days will be one of "inclusivity" rather than "exclusivity". Hence the Invesment into mobile devices, xCloud and TVs.

Oh I reckon they would, definitely. I mean they’ll say whatever the court wants to hear right now to get that deal through, but if they have their way eventually they’d want it as an exclusive in order to sell GamePass subs.

Perhaps but why turn profit down from PS owners? I think it will pan out the as Minecraft did.

Anyhow suppose going off topic a bit I guess...

They go up and down, quite a few on there at RRP and some prices well under with no stock so lots of ‘scalping’ going on depending on stock one assumes :(

You can pick up a digital under the new RRP, not that im considering one just for the main TV….

They didn't ship everything they produced because of the GoW/holiday push. You'll see a huge uptick in sales for Q3.

It's been a while since the PS5 outsold the Switch, last time that happened was back in its launch week. But it looks like Sony is going in with much better supply for the Holidays. Nintendo, on the other hand, seems to be having difficulty getting enough Switches to stores. In particular the Switch Lite seems to be completely gone from store shelves. This week marks the launch of the Pokemon Switch OLED for Scarlett/Violet so that should help.

If that was the case as far as Sony viewed the private offer they received from Microsoft about longer term guarantees on its availability, then Jim Ryan wouldn't have essentially called Phil Spencer a liar over what Phil Spencer was claiming in public about it recently.

I’m not sure I’d be doubting Jim Ryan in this case. Microsoft are all over the place with their stance on it. If I had to guess, I’d imagine that they want Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation, but also renegotiate the existing contract that probably would stop Call of Duty going on Game Pass.

-The Switch is getting back into the usual swing of things right before Pokémon becomes the biggest launch of all time in Japan, it seems.

-Playstation 5 has improved its performance from last week and last year by quite a few numbers. Looks like Sony will have a better end of year result then last year.

-Xbox seems to have slipped away by quite a bit though, sadly.

-If you want to get a decent feel of where the Japanese market is right now, then the performance of Tactics Ogre and Sonic should be seen as instructive. Both titles on Switch outsold the PS4 & PS5 versions combined. Tactics Ogre on Switch almost doubled the performance compared to the other versions. A year ago that wasn't the case with many a multi-platform release.

Not overall though really - I mean they've sold 250k this year compared to 87k last - I'd say they'd be happy with that kind of progress really. It's certainly a better picture than prior gen for them.

Especially when you say:

But they are the ones running behind YTD still (885k vs 917k), and must be disappointed they are fighting more with MS in Japan and just having to watch Switch disappear off into the distance.

The reason I highlighted the PS5 performance has a lot to do with where Playstation was as a brand last year. It came dangerously close to selling less then 1 million units of hardware over the entire calendar year. That has only happened twice in the entire history of the Playstation brand. There were severe questions going into 2022 if the PS5 could sell 1 million on its own considering how it performed in '21. Now that were heading into the holiday however, the stock seems to be there and the PS5 seems to be in a much healthier position then last year.

But yes, you're correct in saying that Xbox is now in a much stronger position then the Xbox One. Microsoft still has a lot of work left to do though. As evidenced by this graph:

And here's the current outlook for the PS5 in Japan:

Finally, the Switch:

Is there any way to use that graph to prove that Nintendo surely TEH DOOMEDif they keep putting out weird underpowered hardware and they need to release a proper 4k graphics powerhouse Switch ASAP?

You could always turn it upside down and claim it'll start selling negative amounts of units.
