It's been a while since the PS5 has been the best selling system for the week. But here we see the fruit of better supply finally coming to bear. Meanwhile, Switch maintains the numbers it did last week, but with a significant drop from the previous year.

Software wise, everything is less rosy when it comes to new releases. The latest entry in the Story of Seasons series has a solid opening. But of dear, the numbers for Forspoken and Disgaea 7 are... not good. Last weeks FE: Engage has seen a significant drop, but there were reports of sell-outs with new stock not arriving untill later next month.

That's all for this week. Untill next time.

Hot on the heels of the latest Nintendo Direct, we have some new numbers from Japan.

Look at the PS5 surge in Japan. It'll catch up the Switch's YTD in no time like this. Switch has seen a small bump compared to last week as well. Though numbers are down from last year again. We're also seeing the Xbox Series consoles with a nice surge before a price increase later this year.

Software wise, it's a bit weirder. It looks like we're still not seeing enough PS5's get into people's hands to see software break into the top 10. I'll update the top 30 as soon as that comes out and we'll see how many PS5/PS4 sku's are in there.

This seems like an odd state of affairs. The lowest ranked game on the top 10 list didn't sell 5,000 copies. It seems amazing to me that even though they sold 93,000 PS5s they couldn't get a game over that threshold. Obviously I guess there's nothing new out for PS5, and maybe the above doesn't include digital but the Switch's domination is really insane.

It doesn’t include digital or, obviously; used games, which are huge in Japan.

But yes, it is astonishing.

I’m sure the PS5 will have one in the top ten next week.  Perhaps even the top spot.

From what I've been hearing, a lot of PS5's are still going overseas and not getting into the hands of Japanese players. Hence you see the last two years where PS5 software has lagged behind the early years of the PS4 in terms of sales.

Maybe.  But there are at least PS5s on shelves of the stores in my city - dwarfed by Tokyo but the biggest in the prefecture - this month which anyone can buy.  For two years they were like rocking horse shit, then they were only available to store credit card holders and raffle winners (the prize was a chance to buy, not a free PS5).  So some of them are getting to Japanese people who want one.  Maybe there just aren’t that many Japanese who want one.

Maybe the big issue is that many of the big games as we think of them for PS5 are quite western centric. Do Spider Man, God of War, Last of Us do gangbusters there? Particularly outside of the early adopters who have had a PS5 for a while.

Looking back on the numbers for Ragnarok:

PS5

just under 30k first week

just under 40k after 2 weeks

week 3 didn’t sell enough to make the top 10.

PS4:

11k week one

sold less than 5800 week 2.

So I’d say that’s a pretty resounding no.

I think the CoD games do ok in Japan and Horizon Forbidden West has done just under 150k PS5 which is around 6% attach rate for physicals which seems reasonable.

I feel for MS, they have a really good product in the Series S|X and Game Pass, they’re incredibly aggressive with their pricing, and yet here they are again in third place. Meanwhile Sony raises the price of its games and consoles and still they can’t make them quick enough 🤷‍♂️

I guess this shows the relative importance of releasing triple A exclusives that are well received.

God of War was such a draw from the outset in Japan that SCE licensed it to Capcom for domestic distribution ;)

People say that's xenopobia, but Western charts are dominated by local games for local people too.

Spoiler

Yeah, Yeah, Nintendo, whatever.

Not wishing the clog up the Hogwarts Legacy thread with tedious sales discussion, but how many copies do people Hogwarts Legacy will sell? 800,000 simultaneous players on Steam only puts it below Elden Ring and Cyberpunk for all-time for single-player-focused games and it doesn’t seem like a particularly PC-oriented title demographic-wise.

Based on this, 20 million seems like a gimmie (roughly what Spider-Man sold) and I think we could see it hitting 35 million plus, perhaps even more.

In retrospect, Microsoft missed a trick by not throwing a fortune at a marketing deal and bundle with the Series S for launch.

How many has it sold?

It only came out on Friday, figures aren’t in yet.

There’s still last gen and switch versions to hit, I reckon 35 million by year end would be a pretty conservative number.

No idea, but don't be too surprised if you see it  in the Japanese top 10 and the UK charts soon. It's still a popular franchise world wide (much of which was built before Rowling was known as a complete shit) and for some will have that new-gen feel.

I will stick to Avalanche's other classic Toy Story 3 which is backwards compatible on the Xbox.

35 million in a year would make it the fastest selling game of all timeI’m still not fully sold on it doing quite that well yet.

Ah, maybe not then. I was thinking MW2 had already done those sorts of numbers.

Apparently one of the reasons for the recent uplift in PS5 sales is that people are buying it before an incoming price increase. Another reason is that the stock dump has removed the lottery system that was in place for systems. People can finally get a console from shops.

Of course the big problem is that sales are being driven largely without software. The machine is selling but the software isn't so that means that it's doubtful that the high sales will continue.

We've received the January NPD sales today. PS5 came in 1st in terms of unit sales and revenue. Switch came in second in both categories and Xbox 3rd. Growth for both PS5 and Switch compared to last years January results.

Alas, some less fun news to report: platform specific charts have become a no go zone for the NPD. Yet another point of information that makes these results a little bit less usefull. Still, go ahead and gawk at the top 20.

This definitely isn't true anymore, if it ever was.

In the past few weeks PS5 has gone from impossible to buy in Japan without jumping through a bunch of inconvenient hoops to basically easy to walk into any shop that sells games and buy one. Any Japanese person who wants a ps5 can walk into a shop today and buy one.

I've been seeing used PS5s at well below RRP in shops, which is a big sign that the shops feel the shortages are finished.

Until now, the big chains would have sold them secondhand for exactly rrp and the indie game/retro shops at whatever scummy scalper price they thought someone might be willing to pay.

Meanwhile, I have never seen a series x in stock and MS are substantially increasing the price of the S and X in a few days :D

There were a pretty significant numbers of Japanese PS5s sold across China/HK over the past two years. Impossible to say how many, really, but the most local shop to me regularly posts photos of them stacked up to the ceiling in his stockroom and that's just one importer in a mid-sized city.

The PS5 continues onward as the system sells 90k+ units for a second week in a row. This it brings with it software in the top 10 with Hogwarts Legacy having a great launch and GT7 selling over 5000 copies. Meanwhile, we have the Switch holding steady at 55k with plenty of software in tow. Of interest for the Switch is that last week pre-orders for Tears of the Kingdom opened up with a record number of pre-orders. BotW became the best selling Zelda ever and TotK looks to follow in its footsteps.
