PS5 holding nice and steady with incredible numbers. Switch settling in to a twilight phase sales pace. A great hold for Hogwarts Legacy and a bit of a dissapointing start for Wild Hearts. Elsewhere, we see  Tales of Symphonia on Switch outselling the PS4 version almost 3:1.

Hogwarts Legacy has sold 12 million in 2 weeks (on Series X/PS5/PC only).

Interestingly, that’s about the same as Elden Ring did - obviously huge but it looked like it would be a bit higher based on Steam numbers.

The Dark Souls trilogy has sold over 27 million copies, with 10 million of those being for the third game. How can that be classed as a niche?

That’s my point tho, they sell incredible numbers for something that isn’t mainstream like fifa, cod etc - outside of this forum I don’t know anyone who’s has played Elden Ring (I haven’t) or plays any of the souls games, I don’t think that’s unusual.

 

My point is that 20 million sales in what is the exact opposite of a ‘mainstream game’ is incredible - if Harry Potter didn’t beat that easily I’d say it was an abject failure - it’s issue will be player retention one imagines!

What's different about FromSoft games is how universally popular they are with "gamers". You cannot move for being told that they're the best games ever made. The number of people who are desperate to - or understand how to - like them (look at memories in the Elden Ring thread spending fuck tonnes of hours on a game where he's not enjoyed any of the previous of their games he's tried). They are the definition of mainstream within gaming. It's really just a summary of how massive "core" gaming is these days.

 

As for not knowing other people who play this stuff. I suspect that's age (no offense 😅). In my late 30s and working in tech I know a lot of gamers but most of them I would consider very very narrow minded PC gamers. And as much as I know no one who plays FromSoft games (including me) I don't think I know anyone who plays FIFA or CoD either. But I suspect it I was in my 20s they'd be shit loads of both.

 

BIt yes, hence I expect Potter to trounce Elden Ring over time.

The PS5 domination continues once more. If it keeps this up, it'll catch the Switch's numbers for this year within either next week or the week after that. A massive turn around for Sony in Japan. Switch is up from last week but down from last year.

 

Software wise we have an amazing launch for Kirby and a not so great launch for OT2. Significantly down from the launch of the first game which launched at 109k back in 2018. Elsewhere we see Yakuza doing decent numbers on PS4/PS5.

The biggest WTF is who found a secret stash of PS4s as its selling significantly more than a year ago, thought it has been discontinued.

I think that is a glib, unfair and incorrect comparison.

 

That specific example you have copy/pasted as a "zing" was people saying they would boycott the game and then playing it. So not only was it an unsuccessful boycott, it was also hypocritical on the part of those saying they would boycott it and didn't.

 

In this instance the people boycotting it, in the large part were not hypocritical as they didn't buy the game and continued to discuss why. Secondly the fact is that individually people did not boycott the game thinking the game wouldn't sell - you can see from the thread that people knew it would sell regardless. So people boycotted the game for personal reasons (in some cases denying themselves something they love) and didn't imagine it would make a material difference to sales. They did this because they felt it was the right thing to do.

 

To try and paint that with a sarcastic "another videogame boycott success story" is disingenuous and a pretty shitty take.

Software wise we see Kirby with an incredibly soft drop compared to the previous week. Wo Long has a rather weak launch but we're seeing a good sign for the PS5 as the PS5 version outsells the PS4 version. A good sign that tells us the PS4 audience in Japan has begun transitioning to the next system. There's been a number of cases like that this year and it shows that whatever audience Sony still has in Japan, its incredibly loyal.

 

On the hardware side, we're seeing the PS5 surge cool down a bit but still doing tremendous numbers. The total number for hardware sold this month comes to around 350.000 units for the PS5 and it's been a while since a Playstation console sold that many units in a month in Japan. Over on the Switch side, we see the Switch increasing in sales for the second time in a row. Whatever the future may hold, Switch is holding out like no other system in its twilight years.

The PS5, whilst still selling massively better then the previous 2 years, looks to be cooling down significantly compared to earlier this year when it was posting 90k+ weeks. The Switch has regained the lead in terms of weekly hardware sales for now. Let's see how things go next week when we'll have the numbers for RE4 Remake coming in. Expect a nice bump for the PS5 in any case.

 

Speaking of software, Hogwarts Legacy is the last remaining Playstation title in the top 10 at the moment. Kirby still carrying on like it's a new Switch title rather then a remaster of a late era Wii title. Bayo Origins has a predictably small opening.

A reasonable launch for RE4 so far, charting with higher numbers then RE: Village almost 2 years ago*. Elsewhere, we see the latest Atelier game performing well across the board. Hardware wise, we're seeing the PS5 go down in sales once again compared to last week. Still, those YTD numbers are a huge step up from last years. Switch on the up and up as well compared to last week but down by quite a bit compared to last year.

A nice little rebound for the PS5 compared to last week. That bodes well for the coming launch of FF16 which is beginning to gain momentum in terms of pre-orders.

Microsoft released their Q3 results. Games overall down 4%, with games hardware down 30%.

 

Overall, a good result, although the hardware decline is interesting.

 

I wonder if the hardware sales decline is down to the increased availability of the PS5 - when the PS5 wasn’t as available, people chose to buy whatever they could get or the option that was more available. Now availability has improved, there’s a greater preference for the PS5 which seems to be selling gangbusters.

MS haven't delivered big exclusives the way Sony have, I really think it's that simple. 

 

On paper they have the capacity to do so but they need to start delivering with Redfall.
