Remember seeing them at Exit Festival in Serbia in 2009 with zero expectations and they put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. They have been markedly less shit and even a bit good since around then.

I'm all about Agoraphobic Nosebleed this year though.

YAAAASSSSS

They are pretty decent live, although it's been at least 7 or 8 years now since I've last seen them. Still need to get around to seeing them with Head, he left just before I saw them for the first time. :(

Put me in the 'new Mastodon' camp. Even though I don't smash the replay button on their albums as much, I do really enjoy their more recent output. Still... they have yet to best Crack the Skye!

In other news:

Jeff Holcomb filmed a "making of" documentary of the #peripheryiii recording process. Coming soon!

EDIT: Oh... FB still doesn't embed properly eh?

Still interested to hear Giraffe Tongue Orchestra stuff with lads out of Mastodon, Dillinger, Jane's Addiction and Thomas Pridgen on drums.

Will probably be shite like all supergroups but whatevs. Edit: Yeah this is fuck awful. Oh well.

"Mastodon can't make a good to save their lives."

Remission is a stone cold classic. The amount of money relapse has made from Mastodon has probably kept them afloat for so long and let them put out albums by Mortician and Regurgitate! :)

I was being a bit facetious and I should listen more to Remission actually, but I do find a few of their albums really top heavy, especially Blood Mountain seems to peter out. Jesus, last saw them supporting that album and Tool in Belgium nearly 10 years ago, starting to feel old...

The hybrid-picking solo at the end of The Czar is possibly my favourite guitar solo ever, proper goose-bumps. Only other one that does it for me to that extent is Tunnel of Love by Dire Straits. Which I made a bad youtube video of playing along badly.

Old Sigh is great.  Ghastly Funeral Theatre  and Hail Horror Hail are amazing when you consider they were doing this sort of stuff in 1997.  Thrash riffs, black metal snarling and a heavy Japanese folk influence, singing about dodgy ancient japanese blood rituals and demons.  No wonder Euronymous signed them back in the day.  There was fuck all else like them.

FnM have just announced reissues of King for a Day and Album of the Year to go with the We Care a Lot one already due in August.  Both on double CD's and double LP's with the second discs comprised of the usual singles, remixes and rarities you get on these sorts of things.  Original albums remastered too.  There's nothing there I don't already have but I'm going to pick them up because I'm a sucker for anything FnM and also because my original CD copies are pretty old and battered now.

Never thought I'd say this but I am listening to an Infant Annihilator album.

Those fucking song titles, wow.

00:00 - 01) Unholy Gravebirth
04:48 - 02) Crucifilth
09:43 - 03) Motherless Miscarriage
12:00 - 04) Baptised. Bastardised. Sodomised.
16:24 - 05) Behold the Kingdom of the Wretched Undying
34:04 - 06) Soil the Stillborn
38:04 - 07) Paedophilic Ultimatum
39:14 - 08) Neutered in Utero
44:00 - 09) Pelt of Innocent Flesh
51:06 - 10) Blasphemian
58:30 - 11) Neonatalimpalionecrophiliation

But then the lyrics are so over the top and nasty that they're not even offensive any more.

Throw in Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus into the mix and I'd certainly say Australian Metal is riding a wave at the moment.

You forgot to mention Alchemist (succeeded by The Levitation Hex), Be'lakor and Sanzu.

Meanwhile, Colosso have a lyric video off their new album. If you haven't heard the debut Abrasive Peace, check that out too.

Was up in the loft the other day - digging out a rucksack, if you must know - and found a pile of old CD's from my yoof I'd forgotten existed. Highlights include Ugly Kid Joe, America's Least Wanted (you heard. Great album - massively underrated), Skyclad, Old man's Child, The Pagan Prosperity (decent early Dimmu Borgir-ish) and Hecate Enthroned, Upon Promeathean Shores and The Slaughter of Innocence.

The Slaughter of Innocence is some great melodic blackened deathy shit.  Fucking amazing drummer on that album. I remember they were always compared to CoF in the early days which must have done their heads in.  SoI is better than anything CoF have ever done.  Wikipedia tells me they're still going. I must check out some of their later stuff. I never knew they were from Wrexham, the town of my birth, amazing scenes.

It's like the 90s never stopped in my house.

Fantastic record.

My guitarist in Cursed As Angels is a big Ugly Kid Joe fan, has seen them five or six times, but had never clocked the Rob Halford cameo on 'Goddamn Devil' until I pointed it out to him a few weeks ago. He'd heard the song hundreds of times but just never realised it was Halford.

Oh really?  I'll give that a listen when it's out.  Anything you'd recommend I check out from their post Slaughter of Innocence output?

Edit - I will say I'm not a huge fan of classical black metal screaming and screeching these days though, although I can put up with it if the underlying music is good.  I can't listen to stuff like early Mayhem or Emperor any more, much as I used to love it.
