Nintendo 3DS

I'm a bit unsure about which model to go for now - regular or XL - as price wise there isn't much between them. Obviously face plates and SNES buttons are a big win, but I don't want to regret downsizing for how little the price difference is (and once you factor in a faceplate it's barely anything).

I do think the XL screens are a bit pixelated, and the 3D ghosting seems a lot worse on the bigger screens. It's great for mapping in Persona Q though :D

Hmm. Just watched a video comparing the New 3DS and the New 3DS XL, and the guy mentioned about the XL version being much easier to hold. I do remember the regular 3DS making my hands ache after a while actually, so it might just have to be the XL for me (bye bye faceplates :().

Anyone with an original 3DS and a New 3DS: is the new one more comfortable to hold, and does it feel any bigger in your hands?

It's there, it's just not showing up on search for some reason.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-2205746-New-3DS-White/dp/B00SFLSLW0/ref=pd_rhf_ee_p_img_2

I was wondering what was taking it so long to show up. By navigating manually rather than searching I was able to find the Black New 3DS XL which is the one I want.

Normally I would pre-order right away, but I'm getting some Amazon Gift Vouchers at the end of the month. Do I need to use them at the time of ordering or can I add them to the order later?

You can add the vouchers later on. Just go into the order and input the voucher code there.

This video helped me decide to go for the XL. The guy's a bit annoying, but it's a very thorough comparison. From what I've gathered, if you had a regular-sized 3DS before then the regular N3DS is fine, but once you go XL it's hard to go back to the smaller screen. I'm not especially bothered by the face plates, and I know they'll just cause me to spend more money, so the XL's slightly longer battery life and bigger screen have won me over. A lot of stuff I've read and watched says the XL feels a lot more expensive and less plasticky, too.

Some of you seem to be selling your 3DSes before the New 3DSes arrive: You do realise that you will have to re-buy any games you purchased from the eShop, right?

I don't think this is true, is it? From what I can gather, you have to ring Nintendo to unlink (but not delete!) your NNID from your 'old' 3DS before you can register it on your N3DS and re-download your purchases. I'm just going to do a system transfer once my N3DSXL arrives and then flog my old XL as I can't be arsed to ring Nintendo's customer service.

That's the same video I watched :D When he mentioned how comfortable the XL is to hold, I had flashbacks of the handcramp I got from the original model during certain games. Anyway, I've ordered a blue one for £144 from Amazon France. At least now I can cancel my wooden faceplate order with Game and put the money towards games!

Does your bank charge for currency conversion?

The thought of playing Afterburner on the XL's huge screens really rings my bell. Im still on an original 3ds so I'd always intended to go XL when funds allowed. However the slight screen increase they've given the normal n3ds have really made me pause. That plus the smaller physical dimensions, plus the white colour, plus the face plates, plus the damn SNES BUTTONS!! Gah!

Ambassador upgraders who came from the original size, have you found the new screen size makes a noticeable difference?

I've just ordered a black N3DSXL from Amazon.fr. With delivery and my bank's conversion fee, I think it'll work out at about £147. MM on top of that from The Game Collection is about £30, so £177 or so all in all. I'm a bit dubious, however, so I'm going to keep my Zavvi preorder open for the time being (£200).

And that pouch is lovely, Paulando. Where from?

I've 'downgraded' from an XL - the pixelation on the bigger screens was a bit of a disappointment when I bought it after the original 3DS and I much prefer the new3DS. Screen size not an issue, main benefit is the vastly improved 3D sweet spot. Very jealous of the Majoras Mask package though.

Crikey the n3ds on amazon.fr are about £120! Very tempted at that price. Anyone see any downsides ordering from our cousins? Returns might be a bit convoluted but at that price it might be worth a punt.

You'll likely get charged a currency conversion fee if paying by debit card. I'm with Natwest and it's only about 3%, they tell me. Apart from maybe coming in French packaging, however, and a slightly longer delivery time, there aren't any other hitches, from what I've read: it's PAL, you don't pay import fees in the EU, and you can claim the warranty through Nintendo UK.
