The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Picked up the GOTY edition on Series S for a couple of quid the other day.  Tried it on the PC ages ago but never got on with it.  But having got into the Netflix series, I feel like i should give it another go after all the praise it gets.  Think this is going to be the game I settle on playing over Xmas.

Just had a quick try this morning on my Series S to see what i was like.  Looks to be 2k 30fps with more detail or 1080p 60fps.  Both look stunning for a 7 year old game.

Going to finish of High on Life first, then let my playthrough commence with this. Should keep me going a while :D

So on the PS5, it won't read your PS4 data apparantly.

you have to install the PS4 version and load up that, then select cross-save/progression to get to on to GOG which you can then use on the PS5 version.

Aww, good to know. Thanks man.

I just started a fresh game on XBSX and the first walk out on to the balcony and yikes, some horrible clouds clipping in and out of view as you pan around. Not a great start. Flipped over to PS5 and it's flawless.

I noticed this too. I might wait for the digital foundry review before proceeding with one version

Playing the Series S version in my bedroom, from my OG Xbox One purchase, and hopefully I'm going to be able to transfer my save to my PC installs. Better be able to as I've bought and downloaded the game from GOG.

TBH it looks and plays pretty great on the S so if cross save is somehow a bust I won't be too arsed.

I did a little sightseeing tour on a previous save and encountered some new weather effects on Skellige in the shape of some pretty impressive thunder and lightning. The odd glitch aside, there has clearly been some thought put into this update.

Some nice little touches here. Particularly like the Crow's Perch marker.

Warning: SPOILERS!

I’ve never managed to get invested in this. I bought it on PC, PS4 and Switch over the years in an attempt to make it stick, but the most ever clocked was about 15 hours on Switch trying to justify the purchase.

Downloading PS5 version now, expecting a degree of improvement.

Brief steps to get your PS4 save sorted.

1. Download PS5 version of W3

2. Start it up, go to My Rewards, sign in to GOG when prompted to get your armour and link the account

3. Download PS4 version (asI had deleted it)

4. Same as Step 2

5. Continue your PS4 game and make a new save, the save slot should have a cloud next to it.

6. Once that shows with a tick in a cloud, you are golden.

7. Fire up the PS5 version and you should now have a Continue option. Yay.

Sorry if this seems obvious but I had to go  and look it up, this might help people!

I could have sworn this was a PS Plus or PS Now title at some point and I had a download copy, but it is asking me to purchase it for £14.99. I have a PS4 disc, can I get the PS5 version with this?

Yeah, you need to have the disc in whenever you play, though.

OMFG. This has clicked, big time. Bought it ages ago on my One X, got to level 4 but just wasn't feeling it. It looked lovely but pretty sure the 30fps was hindering my play. Anyway, loaded it up on my Series S this morning and it felt like a different game, was starting to feel it.

Been playing the GOG version, I bought last night for six quid, for several hours now and it's glorious, the visuals yeah, but it's the gameplay and mechanics that have blew me away.

Love the fact it's cross save, it loaded the Xbox save without prompting. Smooth transition. Nice action.

Looks stunning at 4K60, not a hitch with everything turned to ultra+ and sexy hair. No RT, mind, that's asking too much from my poor old 2080TI.

What a click.

Rock Paper Shotgun have put out a video where they seem surprised that they can only get 30fps at 1440p on a 3070 paired with a bog standard i5 with the graphics settings and all ray tracing turned up to maximum.

I mean ray tracing in a massive open world is always going to be expensive so I'm not sure why they think that's strange, despite it being an old game.

It's like expecting to run Crysis maxed out or something with this ray tracing stuff.

The fact it runs worse than before with all the ray tracing turned off is pretty shit though.

They also said they turned on DLSS and it barely increased framerate, which implies their machine was being heavily CPU bound - they didn't specify what i5 CPU they were using either, but also didn't mention if they had tested that to find out.

Say what you like about Digital Foundry, but they do actually put the effort in to show exactly where performance might be lacking, and also crucially whether saying "crap performance" is justified with different setups and with the rendering tech that is being used.

I'm playing Crysis 2 remaster right now and was thinking exactly the same thing.

It's a classic 'just because you CAN rtx it doesnt mean you SHOULD' where, much like crytek do, they have chucked in some excessive gfx settings almost as a tech demo / stress test / thought experiment as much as a practical gaming choice.

Seems to run pretty well for me with rtx off mind you.

They also didn't really put two and two together about the fact that the game now has things like higher resolution textures and that added as standard, so those various upgrades could explain why performance has taken a bit of a hit compared to the benchmarks they said they ran on a 3070 on the game back when 3070s were out. They also didn't compare like for like, as the CPU in the old benchmark machine could well have been better, which would explain why the guy who said they had 5-10fps less on their 3070 than the old benchmark.

The whole video just came across really weird and shoddy, saying "this update is disappointing!" without actually either exploring why that might be the case, or actually listing the detailed specs of the machines they are comparing and using like for like examples. Otherwise it's kind of content poor and doesn't tell the viewer much. Just oddly clickbaity.

I'm not even defending CDPR, but it's frustrating that it doesn't seem to be trying to actually be useful like DF generally do. (Despite their other problems)

I will say that running the thing on a 4090 makes all the pain go away. Effectively, it just bullies its way through it all and the game with all of the stuff turned to ultra+ does show off the game pretty well. The lighting is really lovely, and the reflections in the water looks waaaay better than the silly stuff it used to be like in the original game.

But none of it changes the game in any way, and it's still the best damn game I've ever played.

Honestly, I think the best thing about the update is that I now don't tumble down the stairs every single fucking time.

And I'm sure there are some new cards being used in Gwent.
