If it plays as well as it looks, and there's nothing to suggest that it won't, then well... 'I could really do with a shower right now'.

God I hated that line, it made me cringe every time

'May I stroke your fur please'

I'd be hard-pressed to call anime cutscenes and characters with grotesque proportions as "amazing"

Did you play Xenoblade Chronicles? It's all about location, location, location.

That snowy area with the crystals that lit up in the night was incredible.

Edit: so you didn't.

Getting all a bit sensitive up in here? Check out the Japanophile right there.

What? That doesn't even make sense. Yeah, the characters look crap - you could level the same arguments towards the Souls games. You really don't give a toss about it when playing.

For an open world game, with such a huge world to explore and lots diversified space, I think it looks fine if you consider the hardware it's running on. The character models are, of course, an exception, since they are appalling.

The Xenobolade in the Wii was one of the best RPGs in the previous gen and this seems to continue the trend. Fine by me :).

hun r u ok

Convince me then. I've read numerous comments about how it's basically a retread of tired old genre cliches, which whilst bringing a few respectable options to the table is still suffocated by aesthetic disasters (like the aforementioned graphical nuances, and the totally-not-played-out "cute" characters) that inevitably proved to be a turn-off for many, regardless of how many fans don't acknowledge such blunders that the genre should be doing its best to wipe clean.

It's the complete opposite. First of all it does away with the bullshit of having to save at save points and dying and having to repeat areas over and over again. Save anywhere, load anywhere. The areas are huge, like you're talking a whole map without encountering loading spaces.

The story is actually kinda interesting and there are a few twists that aren't telegraphed in addition to the ones that you'll figure out yourself.

You don't have to grind, just by doing the story you'll be roughly at a decent level to advance, if you do sidequests then the story just gets easier.

It has lots of neat touches like armour and weaponry actually changing your character's appearance, the graphics of the original may look like a really well done PS2 game but it actually feels like you're in a world with creatures and monsters.

The battle system is actually fun and engaging. There's a dynamism to battles where you don't just feel like an observer but it doesn't rely on you having to input any particular combos. Timing only comes in specific button presses to get bonuses, not part of the fighting itself.

I really don't think there's anything cliched about two worlds that are the bodies of titans.

I actually liked the characters. They might look like typical Japanese tropes but they don't act like it, they have real interactions and I didn't feel like the story suffered from characters doing dumb things.

If you have a Wii or a Wii U then you won't lose out by trying it - it holds its value pretty well. It was the first JRPG I finished in a very long time and I didn't feel like I forced myself at any point.

I absolutely loved Xenoblade on the Wii, one of my favourite games of the previous gen, but I've never played any previous games in the series. Are there earlier games in the series (Xenogears?), and if so are they worth playing?

I looked them up and they aren't the same style.

It is a way better game than FFXII. No doubt about it. The environments alone make a mockery of pretty much every other open world game in the sense of scale, and how they keep the distance visually arresting - it never peters off into blandness, there's usually something amazing to look at.

I'm THE Basch!

Xenogears is a really great game: similar kinds of themes in the story, but the gameplay is much more traditional (albeit a great twist on it). It's amazingly epic, but they they completely ran out of money so the second disc of the game is mostly narrated by someone sitting on a chair in a darkened room.

The Xenosagas...bit of a mess.

Basically, liking Xenoblade is no indicator of liking any of the predecessors.

Personally, I think its way better than XII. The characters and story are more interesting for a start.

Really? The characters and story in XC are absolute japanese RPG cookie cutter fare. I mean, you start in your home town, then get sent away on a minor quest, and return to the town to find it on fire, under attack by big enemies in the end. This starts you off on a journey to defeat them. I just described 90% of JRPGs.

Xenoblade does a lot of cool shit, the story and characters are not included in that.

For me, Xenoblade was probably my favourite game of the last few years. It featured an absolutely massive world to explore. Some of the vistas you encounter are incredible. I mean, when you first arrive at The Bionis Leg, it truly was quite spectacular. Filled with giant creatures, breathtaking views and a real sense of scale.

The character models were quite basic but it is the environment and the world which is the focus of the game.

The new game seems to be expanding on those ideas, so I'm all for it.
