PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Just had an email that they are removing the wish list feature for the store, which is a shitty move. It’s the best tool for seeing the games I really want and when they are on sale. Sony just seem to shoot themselves in the foot all of the time by making life a little more difficult for customers for what seems to be no real reason

I tend to use places like psprices for "wishlisting" stuff or finding games cos the official store is a pain a lot of the time. Shows digital and retail prices (including a history of price changes) and has more platforms than just playstation.

Yes psprices is much better and you can set up email alerts on price drops.

I have used it before, I'll make sure everything is on there later. But the point stands that Sony just annoy people because of their shitty online setup

I'm sure I read that the wish list feature would be back on the PS5 something about upgrading the backend I assume.

Gave my Dad my old PS4 and he brought thermal paste the next day because he couldn’t handle the noise when playing GT Sport, something I should of done years ago

How were the results?

I've been playing Xbox a lot recently as I'm saving some PS games for the PS5, however it was regularly jet engining before that. I'm considering moving the old girl up to my office as a remote play/Elite Dangerous box once the new one arrives and am tempted to do the thermal paste if the improvement is noticeable.

The saddest part was actually the intro for me, that PS4 boot up music, man I'm going to miss that. PS3 boot up sound doesn't really do much for me but hearing PS1+2 instantly sends me back to different eras of my life and I think PS4 will be similar. Often found myself with the PS4 on whilst busy or distracted with something else (like looking at the phone) and that ambient music just keeps looping.

PS1 - Reminds me of my teenage years, playing games in my bedroom.

PS2 - Reminds me of College and parties, playing drunk in the dark into the early hours.

PS3 - Vague. Was jumping from country to country, early career.

PS4 - My time in Canada/being in a relationship

Reminder of the others;

edit : Yeah, PS3 is certainly the weakest of the bunch.

That video was great

The PS4 has to be one of my fave consoles but also the console with the most frustrations - I love and hate it at the same time but it is defi up there with my top 3 and while I’m not getting rid of it today does feel like the end of its era.

I can still remember the day I got it, the first thing that had to be done was to get a picture of the box with a cat on it.... once completed it was all about trying the new pad. I hate the PS3 pad (worst pad ever) and was a huge 360 fan and loved that pad so was surprised how good the pad was, then the frustrations started.... first the sticks fell apart but putting some Xbone sticks in it made it a better pad so was almost happy thru decayed so quickly but not so much when the triggers started to be an issue - I couldn’t understand why one fun in BF4 would not fire, a sniper you couldn’t shoot but turns out a known issue with the trigger and well 7 pads later and while I love the pad it’s also the flakiest pad I’ve owned!

If I think back to all the incredible games I’ve played and the amount of time I’ve put on the console then I’m filled with love for the machine, I don’t like ‘Sony style’ games but did love GoW and much later into its life finally played through and enjoyed TLOU after not liking it at all for years - it’s still got awful control of the characters....but for me it has had a couple of moments in gaming that I didn’t think could happen again ‘Mario 64 moments’ the first time our fireteam completed the raid in Destiny was euphoric and playing Astrobot in VR is the closest to the magic of Mario in 3D for the first time I’ve ever experienced - VR has blown me away at times!

There are so many things that annoy me about the PS4.... the noise, the UI is a pain to use and so slow, updates take too long and don’t do it automatically in standby, I can use about a third of my storage space as it needs 750gb to install 10mb updates.... I could go on but simply put none of these things matter really as the machine has given me so much joy, so many incredible games and moments and it’s up there with the snes and 360 as the best console I’ve owned

With all the furore around gamepass on this forum I thought I would check out what is available on PSnow. I actually prefer the selection of games on PSnow after looking at them, if you went by what people say you would think there was nothing but rubbish on the service.

Has anyone tried streaming the PS3 games, what is it like?

I did a bit of streaming of Force Unleashed (can't remember if it was 1 or 2) over wifi a couple of years back, when I had a free trial of Now for a month. It was like every other streaming thing when I used it then - like, it works, but it's still obviously not as good as playing things locally.

Streaming games via PS Now would be fine for RPGs or other genres were the input lag won't frustrate you. I tried Ultra Street Fighter IV on it and it was dreadful (150Mbps dl/ul connection). It's still worth getting if you get a decent deal on a subscription since you can just download the PS4 games and there'll be PS5 games in future too.

Interesting, I will give the PS3 games a go sometime but even with the PS4 games there is still plenty to play from what I saw. Seems to be a lot more Japanese games than what game pass has but then that's almost true in general between the two console brands isn't it? the Xbox for me has always seemed to be more western orientated while the PlayStation brand has much more Japanese content.

I should qualify I am comparing it to game pass on PC, I don't have an Xbox, which at second glance seems like a pale shadow of what you get on consoles.

I completed Batman: Arkham Origins for PS3 streaming to PS4 using PSNow. It was completely fine - the stream was 720p, and thats the resolution that the game renders at natively. There was some very occasional lag caused by the steam messing up, but 99% of the time it was as if I was playing it locally.

They seriously need to up the stream bit-rate for PS4 and PS5 games though. They need 1080p at the very minimum.

Hmmm. Played my Pro for around four hours last night. Turned it off completely eg not rest mode, with the controller before bed. This morning was going to have a quick go but the console light came on for a second, then turned off. Trying to turn it on with the pad did nothing.

Unplugged, did a power cycle and tried safe mode, which worked but the console then wouldn’t restart. Tried about a dozen more times, with the machine only turning on once normally. Every other time the blue light comes on briefly, then nothing.

Have removed the top cover to clean but was no major blockage visible. Otherwise everything has been working fine recently, so wondering if anyone had experienced similar. Some posts elsewhere suggest there may be a power cable issue. Can just about afford a replacement cable to try but a bigger fix will probably mean RIP PS4 Pro :(

Any suggestions for something I’ve missed would be most welcome.

I’ve had similar things in the past where it was the HDMI cable at fault - disconnecting and reconnecting it worked, which was a big relief when I thought the entire console was bricked. It’s a long shot but maybe?

Actually if you have disassembled the thing you’ve certainly already unplugged the HDMI cable so never mind me.

No that’s a fair point, thank you. I actually got it up and running just now, tried a game and installed an update, so think the system is okay. Tried restarting it and the same issue happened with it not powering back on.

I’ll switch out the HDMI. If that doesn’t work then I’ll order another power cable on the basis that if it was an internal issue eg a PSU, the thing wouldn’t start let alone run a game from the hard drive. I hope.

Update: unfortunately, an alternative HDMI made no difference. Fingers-crossed for an alternative power supply.

Update, in case anyone is interested. Erm, so my Pro appears to be working again. Left it unplugged since the error on Sunday, tried earlier and it came on first time.

Restarting worked. Shutting down and turning on a short while afterwards worked too. Not sure what happened on the weekend.

I’ll keep sessions short for a week or two in case there was anything more serious internally but I guess that’ll become apparent again anyway.

Unit is currently in the bedroom as unplugging repeatedly etc was easier there than moving our wooden cabinet in the front room every day. Admittedly partly tentative to move it back, but also partly quite like the idea of chilling in bed with some games, which I’ve not done for a while.
