464gb free and I can’t update BF5, I mean I love the PS4 but fuck me this is beyond stupid - can you even play BF5 on 500gb PS4?

/rant

delete the game and re-install it, [I THINK] it'll vector the patches in, at the same time.

thus saving you the current patching process of having to copy the entire game, patching it, and then deleting the original.

yeah...

FFS went to play the disc version of SoR4 on Friday night... Disc would not read came up as unrecognised... Tried another Disc just to be sure, nope unrecognised. Rebuilt database, failed, only option now seems to be format the system... But PT...

I've seen a few warnings kicking around the net that the 2TB firecuda drives many of us stuck in our PS4 pros are dying. I seem to be a victim of that :(

Anyway I have an external 4TB drive on the way and a 1TB SSD to replace the failed or failing firecuda.

is it possible to stick the firecuda in a caddy and use it as an external drive on the PS4 and maybe recover PT plus some other saves?

You could do the above to redownload PT.

I'll give that a try. Thanks for posting this I remember it from back in the day but thought this loop hole and been closed.

Would still like to try and get some of my gameplay videos of the old drive. Is there a way to do this? I also worry that cloud saves on psplus may have not been running properly.

I can’t understand why a dodgy HDD would cause a problem with disc based games?

I think it was trying to install from disc which all games do. As the HDD was dying it came up with a disc error. That's the theory anyway. It would be pretty bad if a dying BDD could corrupt the HDD to the point of having to format it.

But I'm concerned that after fixing the HDD I may still have a broken BDD...

SSD arrives today so should be able to work out where the fault came from...

There isn't really such a thing as disc based games anymore. Virtually every game installs its full footprint to the HDD anyway and of course, patches.

Sure, but the fault as reported is:

It would be weird if a faulty HDD could make the optical disc report as unrecognised. Seems more likely to me that either the optical drive is faulty or there's dirt on the laser.

Yup that's what I thought but rebuilding the database does not involve the BDD at all yet it fails repeatedly and there's nothing I can do other than format the HDD. Replacement SSD has arrived So I'll pop that in and see if the BDD is the issue.

I did consider getting a gamma chassis PS4 Pro instead but with PS5 months away it seemed better to replace the HDD and get an external that I'll use on the PS5 for my PS4 games - want to keep the PS5 SSD for PS5 games.

Well it looks like the BDD has died as well... Makes no sense that the HDD should have failed as well but it appears to have - I now have a PS4Pro digital edition!

Shame I bought Street of Rage 4 on disc because I won't be able o play it now...

OK so the BDD works when the PS4 is flat not vertical - it seems a little limp but I can now play SoR4 :) - with skipping music! Quite surprised games still read CD audio of Disc... Changed it to retro sound track for chip choons no skipping now! Might see if any of my mates has a lens cleaning disc (are those still a thing?)

Still not sure why the rebuilding the database failed - but at least I can limp along like this until PS5 comes out - most of my recent games have been digital only anyway.

I don’t think any games do use CD audio any more - the drive in the PS4 can’t even play CDs. That skipping audio will be streaming off the HDD. It sounds like both your HDD and ODD are on their last legs.

That's a new SSD I'm running so it shouldn't be a problem. Also you can hear the disk seeking while your playing SoR4 it's struggling to keep up for sure - as soon as I went to chip tunes (retro soundtrack) The issue went away.

I have to say I too am surprised but I pretty sure the PS4 supports audio streaming from disk.

Does the Pro come with the same HDMI cable as the standard PS4 or does it have a better one?

Not sure but I think it comes with one that is suitable for 4K UHD.

I think that due to how the PS4 fancy quick-play install mechanism works, it will load stuff off the disc only if it hasn't been installed on the HDD yet.

Hmm, I've not tried it since will give it a spin later and see if you are right (I hope you are)

You were spot on, the music in the intro no longer skips and the in-game music doesn't skip either. Should be able to get by with the drive half working for now. Some what relieved however thanks to some shitty reason my psplus save backup of God of war is from last year... I hope our Minecraft world's haven't suffered the same fate.

I can't see a logical pattern to why or why not a game save got backed up to psplus. Astro bot - none at all, superhot vr full save backed up. Minecraft was also fine with all the families world's intact.

Yeah, as a sad postscript to my PS4 HDD corruption story, even though my DMC5 file got uploaded at the last minute, when I went back to Persona 5 the save was from months ago :-(

I vaguely remember some weird upload errors about the P5 saves saying the file on the cloud was newer than the local one, which obviously wasn't corrrect. Should have dug deeper at the time.

I feel your pain brother...

Kind of want to do a PSA int he gaming thread to remind everyone to back up their saves ore feel the pain of losing them...

I've tasked my 14yo with the job of playing GoW - he should then create a new save when he gets to the point I got to then he can continue to complete it and I can do the same from the bookmark he creates for me... That's the plan anyway since I've been playing GoW on and off for the last year or so I can't face going back to what is essentially the beginning!

Is the PS store playing up for anyone else or just me?

It loads fine and lets me think I've signed in but then gets stuck in a loop of me not being signed in/clicking the sign in button/reloading the page.

I've tried on PC and iPad (it complains that the browser isn't supported on iPad) but can't log in.

It’s a pain in the arse. On Safari, switch off cross site checking in security, that fixed it for me

  • 2 weeks later...

So my PS4 has finally given up after struggling for the last couple of months. I'm pretty sure the problem is the HDD so I'm thinking I might try replacing it as I don't want to buy a new one with Ps5 on the horizon. I'm just not sure which drives are compatible these days. I was thinking about one of these if any one can confirm it'll work. I'm also going to post for an original 500gb one in the Wanted thread incase anyone has one they've replaced (I gave mine away when I replaced it back in the day).

Why, when you have disk version of a game installed and you then buy the digital version, do you have to delete the disk install and download the digital version to play it? This doesn't happen on the Xbox One and is bloody annoying.

I guess Microsoft always needed to offer that, because the Xbox One disks were originally just going to authorise a digital copy of the game from the store and copy across some files. PS4 never had that, so they never had as much of a reason to make disks and digital copies interchangeable.

And yet not surprising.

Indeed. How hard would it be to check whether you have the digital key to play that game? They do it if you're playing a game on a non primary PS4 where you have to be online, so the ability is there.
