PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Been on it all day since about 11am.

LOVE.

The best thing you can say about the controller is that you forget you're holding it. It just melts into your hands and is instantly responsive in all the genres that are available for launch. So for FPS, driving, arcade shmups etc we're sorted. Every single detail is perfect and feels high quality with a really robust finish. The only slight crit is that the share/options buttons are a bit shallow so you'll usually need to look at the pad to locate them, they don't protrude above the surface of the pad enough to detect them by touch. Apart from that - best pad ever.

Didn't expect how slick and smooth the transitions between playing a game and flipping back to the XMB would be, it's a totally different world to the PS3 where things would chug and lag even for the most trivial operations. PS4 is instasmooth and reduces all the frustration of hanging around for the UI to do its thing. Downloads and installs are noticeably faster than the PS3 on the exact same wifi network, downloads that would be painful on PS3 are flying down now. Virgin fibre if anyone is interested.

Resogun - This is a surprisingly deep shmup and has some of the most satisfying game mechanics I've used for a while. The boost chaining is an unexpected highlight and echoes "bulling" in Space Giraffe - ie ramming enemies instead of shooting them. Brilliant risk/reward structure especially when you realise you get bonuses for conserving bombs, not dying, saving humans etc. I'm an old git and Choplifer/Defender/DropZone were always my favourite shooters, so this is an almost perfect launch game. Even your ship's laser sounds like it's lifted directly from Jetpac. 10/10.

Killzone - Not played much, found it a bit overwrought and feels like its trying to do too much at once. Visuals are stonking of course and you'll enjoy lolly-lagging the scenery and FX, but the game feels laboured and lacking focus. Certainly not the PS4's Halo. Need to see more but didn't think it was compelling enough to spend that much time with.

NFS - Once you get past the patronising tutorial this opens up into something great. A bit overwhelming at first like all open world games, but once you focus on an objective and get in the groove it becomes much more fluid and easy to follow. Shat myself when another player joined an already tense pursuit with the AI and challenged me to a duel whilst choppers were swooping down and EMPs being deployed. It's pretty much Hot Pursuit meets Paradise.

Trine demo - Gorgeousness and gorgeousity.

War Frame - Seems pretty great I think - definitely going to buy some credits and delve further.

Overall impressions - hardware is pure sex, software is way more impressive than expected. Excellent console, would play again, five stars.

Edit: Thanks everyone who added me as a friend today, going to add some more myself tomorrow.

Nope, nothing there for me, and still can't redeem my PS+ code.

I can see a great console there, its just hiding everything away from me just now. a day of pain then home to 4 hours of nothing :(

If you ever had PS+ before (free or paid) it won't work. If you just can't see it in the store right now that might have to do with the current PNS overload issues :(

Sure you aren't just being a noobs? A mate signed up to the trial about an hour ago no problem.

Here's my PS4 odyssey.

Cancelled my preorder a month ago and picked up a Wii U, last night decided the hype train was too much and I still wanted my PS4. popped to the local Asda on a recon mission to see what the score was, overheard a manager talking to a customer about how they'd allocated all their units to customers waiting in the afternoon and were now sold out. Slunk off home with a plan to wake up at midnight to try get one from the Argos website. Come midnight there still seemed to be no option to get one, so I went back to sleep. Checked at half six this morning and my local had a PS4 to reserve for collection. Result!

Picked it up after work to envious eyes of people who'd been asking if they had any in stock.

Absolutely echo all of the love in the thread for the controller, UI, downloading etc.

The streaming stuff is brilliant too, spent the last half hour popping around channels in the live from Playstation app which is great fun. Have accepted friend requests all evening too since adding my name to the spreadsheet, feel free to add if you haven't already!

Never had it. Won't let me redeem my sub either.

On the positive creed and bf single player have downloaded. Surprisingly really line bf, finding opening ship bit on creed confusing and graphics underwhelming, looking forward to hitting land.

Ui is dreamy

Is it meant to sign you into PSN automatically when you start it. Switched mine back on a couple of hours ago and it logged me into my profile but not PSN and I had to do it manually. Assume it may be down to PSN shitting the bed tonight, but thought I'd check.

Had some strange issues, can't redeem codes on the PS4 and Remote Play just won't work :(

Other than that I adore this system already.

Codes other than ps plus use the website

did someone say that theres a way of adding the psplus subscription via web browser? really want to get some resogun action in before bed!

Nope, any other code though

Resogun is amazing but I am proper shit at it, there's got to be some mechanics I'm missing, as I keep losing humans even when there hasn't been a wave of keepers.

Looks and sounds ridiculously good, it kind of reminds me of that advert where everything the guy touches turns to skittles. Except voxels.

God, this console is just the best fucking thing ever.

The box itself looks aces. It's quiet enough. I love the light strip.

The ds4 is THE BEST controller I've ever held. Ever. They fucking nailed it - new benchmark. Move on.

Everything OS side so far has been utterly seamless. Remote play worked a treat too.

Killzone is shiny on steroids. I really like the shooting, it's a challenge even on normal, especially if you don't shut down the alarms!

Just waiting for BF4 update (psn/my bb a little slow) and then I'll be up for some total noob shenanigans.

And Resogun is going to be my game of the year. If crack cocaine and lotto scratchcards had a little baby, it would be less addictive than this.

Nothing quite matches the pain of saving the first nine humans and watching the last one shatter into five bloody voxels as you blow up.

Yeah, I just stopped by my local Tescos (11pm) to buy groceries and while I didn't ask anyone if they were available they had loads of "Take this DVD case to the Electronics Counter" out on display and no 'Sold Out' labels or anything. Seemed to have Killzone and Knack packs as well as the gouging £429 with a choice of two games packs as well.

I still have my PS3, I was thinking....

If I was to connect it back up and log in with my PSN account and then add the PSPlus subscription, would that then mean that if I switched the PS4 back on and logged in with the same PSN account it will recognise the PSPlus on PS4 and let me download?

Cheers,

Indy

While the layout of the UI is a bit meh (I really like the XMB), its very compact and very direct. Looking at the UI now of some 'other next gen console' makes me appreciate this A LOT more. Also, I bought my PS4 au naturel. Part of the experiment here is to see if you could use the "PS4 as a Service" by relying solely on PS+ and F2P stuff.

Resogun is awesome of course. But I already knew that. Finally wrapping my head around chaining and human saving is a real treat and it's excellent to see how they tweaked it these last months.

Contrast is something I want to like and it's serviceable, but it's also a bit rough. Still the story seems to be nice and the presentation is great. It just feels like it's been developed by MacGyver locked up in a freezer cell.

Warframe. Pretty much the biggest surprise of the bunch. It's F2P and it's a shooter, but incredibly enough it's co-op. Load out your character, jump into a level with 3 others and perform the mission for experience and loot to enhance your character. Feels like a streamlined F2P Borderlands with shades of Phantasy Star Online cast in the setting of EVE. I can see myself putting some hours in this one. At the very least try it for yourself.

Still have DC Universe and that F2P war game to try.

Overall I'm incredibly impressed. It's a very convincing piece of kit on a lot of levels and then you connect a Vita.
