PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Got the 1TB SSHD that Rushy recommended and replaced the 500GB one immediately at launch. Sure, the extra capacity isn't necessary for the first year or so, but the improved loading speeds and saving the hassle of transferring everything from the original drive to a new one in the future is worth the extra couple of euros compared to the price in about a year IMO. At the very least I'll play all multiplatform games on it for years to come and the next 6 months are already filled with downloadable indie games I really want to play.

The new gen has driven people a bit crazy. We've also gone from people searching for the best deal to save £1 off a game to people paying loads extra for a digital version (also losing resale value) "so I don't have to change the disc".

I'm not going to buy every game digitally (mostly for the reasons you've listed) but I couldn't pass up on that Battlefield 4 offer, and here's why.

  • I'm going to be playing Battlefield for a good year (or until the next Battlefield comes out) and having it ready to go without having to change discs is just easier and better
  • When I sold BF3 the other week, I got £4.50 for it, so I'm not exactly losing a lot in terms of resale value
  • And when I sell my physical version of BF4 to CEX later today, I won't have lost a penny (CEX will give me £35, the download cost £34.98)

There is having some spare cash and there is being an idiot. I propose that if you buy a 500gb SSD for £250 that you are an idiot. Thats over double the price of a Hybrid that is twice the size, and in many tests almost as fast as the SSD.

Resogun is only one game, and the times aren't actually "literally halved" as you say. If anything it's one game that performs pretty much equally across the three drive types. (stock, the most common hybrid drive and the Evo SSD)

I don't understand this "definitely don't want a hybrid drive" mentality. You don't want the best value for your money? I can just picture you with your eyes closed and fingers in your ears going "lalala can't hear you" as you try to justify to yourself buying a SSD because they are amazingly fast on a pc. The PS4 isn't a PC, and doesn't get anywhere near the benefit, largely because of the SATA controller holding the PS4 back. Again.

It's your money, but there is an old saying about a fool and his money being easily parted.

I appreciate the advice, if not quite the passive aggressive tone. Resogun shows 10 or so second load times compared to 20 on the stock drive. Disc games a lot less difference but still something i would like, i like immediacy in console gaming. No one's going "lalala", i watched the videos and read up a bit. Im not a fan of standard hdds with moving parts, ive lost data in the past, the idea of no moving parts appeals to me. I get that hybrids copy the most used data onto the solid state memory, but for an extra few quid im happy to spend, i'd prefer the full drive to be solid state. Thats why im looking that way.

Find it in the store (on PC) in the 12days of xmas for £24.99 then buy the £10 upgrade on PS4.

I'm living in Germany but have a UK account - I'm guessing that's not a problem?

I'll get a £35 card from CDKeys later today.

Thanks all for the advice!

I'd go hybrid because for most games it's actually faster than SSD due to the way games read and write to the drive. Can't remember where I saw the benchmarks but you're effectively spending twice as much for a slower drive half the size.

Hmm, do you know this 1tb drive rushy spoke of?

He did clearly state twice in the same sentence that he meant games very specifically. Given the testing with ps3 and ps4, it's not actually that far fetched. It's not like SSD is a clear winner on those consoles and in some cases it is slower than Hybrid. Each game works differently and sees different results though.

Why does the PS4 still make noise when it's in standby? Like a low hum. I can definitely hear parts inside it moving too.

Depends on if it is downloading something in the background I guess.

Mine is downloading right now in stand-by mode and it isn't any more silent as if it where switched on.

Can't find the benchmarks I saw but a cursory Google suggests it's very game dependant. And that with SSD when it is faster at loading that's a difference of a couple (like literally between 1 and 3) seconds vs hybrid. So y'know, if four times the cost per MB are worth three seconds go for it.
