PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I got my PS4 today, and it's taken several hours to set up so far - the wireless seems incredibly flakey, in much the same way that the PS3 wireless was a bit precarious. I eventually had to download the update on my computer and update it manually from a USB stick, because it kept failing the download for no reason. Anyway, it's done now, but downloads are tectonically slow - it estimates it'll take about 7 hours to download Resogun, which is absurd.

Is this a common problem, and is there anything anyone can suggest to help? Connecting via ethernet isn't really an option, unfortunately. I'm on 40meg cable Sky Broadband, which is normally excellent.

You may need to forward your ports because it definitely shouldn't be downloading that slow

I thought about getting the 35 pound voucher from CDKeys.com to get BF4, but it says it's only to be used on PS3 and Vita - is that a mistake on their end, or does it also work on PS4?

It should work on all three because it's not like there is a ps4 specific card, it's for psn/sen fullstop.

I left my PS4 while downloading Contrast, when I came back after an hour it had switched itself off mid-download?

I thought it was supposed to go into standby if you left a download running?

Check your powersaving options

Well the PSN store says that it's 33.9 GB, but my Notifications list says it's just 6.3GB, so I'm not sure what's happening there. The update is a further 808 MB, too.

What happened with this then? How big the download end up being?

Edit: just seen the BF thread, so it downloads 6GB which lets you play but continues to download the rest in the background?

Slightly concerned - I've just ordered Battlefield 4 for the PS3 (I used to own a PS3 a while ago). That went fine.

I've then gone to buy the PS4 Upgrade and it says "Unavailable". This is slightly worrying. Do I need a PS4 before I can upgrade, or is there a problem here?

Yes, same as with disk based installs it seems. It's a bit confusing but a really nice feature at the same time.

If you check the details for the game (options key) it will show you the download state. In the case of BF4 it will show you the single player campaign is available and the percentage still required to download before the full game is available.

What's the craic with noisy PS4s then? Are they being classed as being faulty?

Mines fan always soud noisy. After about 15/20mins of play the super loud fans kick in, it's sounds like a fan oven cooling down. I have it in one of the shelf spaces in a wooden tv cabinet but it's petty spacious around the PS4, there's plenty of airflow. I don't know if where I have it is causing it to get hot and be so loud or if it's a fault. Maybe the air around the PS4 is just getting too hot too. I've never had an issue with heat from other systems/TV boxes in the TV unit before though.

Is there any official word from Sony on this yet? I can't seem to find anything.

I have mine on the top shelf of my TV cabinet (TV is wall-mounted) and it doesn't make a great deal of noise, even with a disc spinning. Can you take it put of the cabinet and test it? I think it draws in air at the sides, and kicks it out at the back. If some of the air from the back is getting whipped around to the sides, I can see that being an issue.

Oops - so digital downloads only from now on?

Trade the dog in, or get it a job in Edge.

Guys just a thought - does China Rising come with the PS3 Upgrade purchase?

I reckon no. Here's why:

I bought it on PS3 and upgraded to the PS4 version even before the PS4 was out, in effect pre-ordering the PS4 version. This said I was entitled to China Rising, cos I pre-ordered. It never happened. I'd decided on goi ng Premium anyway by then, so I wasn't too bothered, but I suppose either way it answers your question!

I'll give that a go Steev because last thing I want is for it to fuck up but I don't really have anywhere for it to go. May take the back panel off the cabinet, or at least cut a bigger hole behind the ps4

I'm sure I read that somebody in this very thread made a cardboard exhaust port (smaller than a womp rat back home) for their cabinet, and that seemed to do the trick for his excessively noisy PS4.

Sticky R1 button came back :( bought a new pad today. Gonna get a replacement from Sony and then sell the replacement. Hopefully they won't notice/care that I cracked it open.

Anyone have anything sat on their ps4, space is a premium so ideally my super slim ps3 will sit on it - any issues?

Should be ok, no vents on top. You'll cover up the sexy lightstrip though!

Depends on if it is downloading something in the background I guess.

Mine is downloading right now in stand-by mode and it isn't any more silent as if it where switched on.

It's definitely not downloading anything, it makes the same low-level noise in standby all the time. Admittedly it is currently in my bedroom and my bed is probably less than a metre away from it so I probably notice it more than most people (if it is, indeed, a regular thing). It was keeping me awake last night so I'll probably just end up switching it off at night time.

Not a bad idea that. Just made it with an empty bog roll?

I don't think so, I think he cut a larger hole at the back of his cabinet, then cut out a four-sided piece of card as a tunnel. I've had a little search through the thread but I can't see his post! Hopefully he'll pop up in here at some point.
