There's supposed to be an enhanced edish being released at the same time as the SS1 remake. Not sure what they're gonna enhance, tbh a lot of the retexturing mods miss the mark and leave the game looking less aesthetically pleasing.

Yeah, the enhancements just make the rest of the game look even more dated. If there is going to be a remaster it’d have to be pretty extensive.

Nice to be randomly reminded of SS2 today when I glimpsed this thread. The only game where I literally hid under a desk for about ten minutes, while a shrieking cyborg midwife clattered about outside the room.

I never heard about that so I googled, but are unable to find any sources for an enhanced edition other than the one released a few years back nine years ago (Jesus, time flies)

As far as modding goes. I guess it all depends on personal preferences. I find sharper textures to be quite enjoyable.

She didn't threaten to tear out your spine, did she?

That’s the one! And that picture is exactly how they still look in my memories.

It remains my proudest gaming achievement that I managed to summon the cojones to complete SS2. The original was pretty fucking terrifying by itself.

the movement can take some getting used to (if you've also never played Thief) but it's up there in terms of great games. if you want something a bit more modern, Prey comes from the same mold and is also fab

Also the soundtrack is amazing.

GoG is the best bet, yes. I would also advise against modding it up with updated character models or whatever else for a first playthrough, as a lot of those kinds of mods I've seen can only be described as completely lacking in taste or artistic ability and end up making everything (especially midwives) look more absurd than scary.

EE supposedly has VR, 4k resolutions etc.

This article about a collected mod pack has somebody claiming all the mods featured will also feature in Nightdive's EE. Not sure if that's true or not.

What's the best/easiest way to play this now without loads of faffing? Is it on GoG or something?

the below vid has a good guide to mod it without using the terrible character model update

Having recently got a Steam Deck, and blown the cobwebs off my Steam library, I was delighted to discover that not only do I own SS2, it’s Deck verified. I think you’ve just convinced me to give it a go!

The only fucking way I managed to complete the game back in the day was cheating and making myself invincible. This happened after about an hour. An hour of sheer pant-shitting terror and one which has forever scarred my ability to play these games.

I'm looking at you, Alien Isolation, you utter wanker.

There should definitely be strafing. Also leaning, which is actually quite important when rounding corners.

(I will say SS2 is a very mouse and keyboard oriented game; it surprised me a little to see it as Deck certified)

Yea, it’s not! But it runs well. I’ll try to fiddle with the controller profile, there’s more than enough sticks and buttons on the Deck to handle strafing and leaning.

I actually recognise some of those locations. Can't have played the game for, what, 15 years or more, now?

That’s a bummer, man. Could it be press and hold <button> to strafe? I really hope you figure it out.
