DRIVECLUB - being put to sleep by Sony in March 2020

Those Metto comments are so odd.. If a lack of personality means we get to do without the "Dudebro" angle of Dirt, the Ibiza nightlife of Forza Horizon, and "Wilder Brothers squabbling with Stuart" in TDU, then im all for it!!

As for the Autolog comment, this Driveclub system is actually much better than the mess that has become.

Granted there is nothing revolutionary (beside the visuals), but what it does, it does very well.

It's not the dudebro thing that's gone. For a game that celebrates cars and driving, it's Spartan up to the point that the interface became something fit for use in public transport. There's no 'fun'. Even starting a race is so po-faced you could call it bureaucratic. It's serious driving. I mean, you know things are off kilter when even Gran Turismo feels like a rave party in comparison.

Which means guys like McSpeed go into overdrive to play it as they focus on the actual game, while guys like me sigh and scratch another title off the list while we wait for Namco to release a new Ridge Racer.

Pleased this has a demo as I do fancy giving it a quick go. Chances of a purchase seem to be dwindling though (although appreciate comments in here from others I have raced with in the past appear to be decent).

Shame I wont be able to use my wheel though :(

Watched Giant Bomb's quick look. It seems competent enough but very staid, identitiy-less and dull. Reminds me of the first Forza that way. If this had been a modern PGR I would have got a PS4 for it, but I might as well just get an Xbone when I get a console as I expect to love FH2.

So rushed home expecting this to have downloaded but no. No idea why, I pre ordered, left the ps4 on with a timer counting down from 30 min, but not a sausage!

So now starts the wait again :( one hour and I can play, which I am guessing will be one car and track for the next two hours as the rest of the game loads in. Baws.

Doesn't it come out on Friday in the UK?

It does lack...something, but I can't put my finger on what, exactly. A lot of reviews comment on the lack of personality and I can't understand what they expect from a racing game, really. What constitutes 'personality' in a racing game? I'm hoping the online stuff will open it up and the real game will shine through. I'm hoping, essentially, it's another destiny - not what we expected, perhaps, a slow burner, maybe, but a great game despite everything.

Yeah watching that Giantbomb quick look I think its fairly evident that the review scores for this have suffered with it following so closely in Horizon's footsteps and being put in direct comparison. Which is a little unfair as it is trying to do its own thing, the delay might also have let them finish it up and then the personality may have come through more.

From everything that has been written it sounds a lot like it suffers from the same problems as Forza 5, itself a launch title. Didn't DriveClub get reworked at the start of the year, or at least taken in a different direction? I wonder how much that hurt the game.

I wasn't worried until I read the Metro GC review :(. My concern now is dodgy AI, the tracks look tight in places and if the AI is blindly following the racing line it'll spoil things. Good news about the handling though.

Now, here is where that review gets a bit silly, too. I don't find the AI that dodgy at all.

First of, it doesn't closely follow the racing line at all - instead it's prone to both aggressive overtaking and defending, mostly if you gave an AI car a push when passing. And it's not just directed at the player - several times I have seen AI cars rubbing paint on each other, sometimes even spinning each other out as a result. It's pretty good all around.

Best example: when I was watching a mate play, he overtook an AI competitor at high speed, moved ahead and instantly slammed his brakes. The AI car noticed, swerved and avoided him gracefully!

So rushed home expecting this to have downloaded but no. No idea why, I pre ordered, left the ps4 on with a timer counting down from 30 min, but not a sausage!

You'll earn a bunch of new cars in just the first few races - no matter the gameplay mode - and all tracks are unlocked by default :)

My pre-order download just jumped into action. Still hugely looking forward to the game.

The reviews are certainly lower across the board than I predicted, but aside from the A.I. there's nothing too off putting. I wanted Driveclub to be a straight skill based racer, and that's what it appears to be. Be curious to see how the game looks this time next year.

Exclude the story bits, but yeah, even then pretty much all of the above.

I'm pretty sure once you've given it a try you'll buy into the full thing.. and start destroying our times on the leaderboards again ;)

Isn't that the exact thing that elevates competent games to great games?

The reviews seem to fall somewhere below competent in places due to AI issues and the punishment system being far too punishing.

I just watched a project cars video in the other thread and while not the same game it just looks so alive, i want to get my wheel out and play it! Then i saw some streaming of Horizon 2 and it looks stunning, it looks so much fun with so much freedom - i want to play that game badly!

I watch stuff for this and it looks bloody amazing but just a bit meh - the cars all look FWD with loads of understeer and the odd bit of snap oversteer and the tracks look really constricted - i have had the same issues with it for some time and thought i was the only one judging by this thread but appears not.

I dunno, i will still give it a go as i am desperate for a driving game to play but unlike PCars and FH2 this doesn't excite me and that is a bit disappointing as its the only one i have access to at the moment.

Terrible music and a dodgy voiceover? I'll pass, thanks! :P

Exactly, you can actually pass judgment on it. I still cannot do that with Driveclub. It's… there.

I still think criticising a straight up racing game for a lack of personality, is like the Edge review criticising Doom for not being able to talk to the monsters.

Maybe TDR should pull out of that new anti-grav racing game by the ex-wipEout devs then.

Unless you're just really really into cars above all else, racing games have to have some kind of identity and 'personality'. Just like any game in any genre, theme, presentation, tone etc are all as important as the core gameplay mechanics.

Hell no! Can't wait to see what's produced.

I just don't know what kind of "personality" people were actually expecting from this, when the cards have been on the table all along about the kind of racer it was going to be (i.e traditional in structure).

Anyhow it's obviously one that's going to split opinion and atleast the PS+ version is there for people to make up their own minds,

Has it been said when lobbies will be included? I would want to play with a few mates without any AI or random players joining.

Not yet unfortunately.

Considering the initial unveiling going down the 'touch of leather' feel, I was expecting something that would celebrate cars. And considering Gran Turismo already filled the 'car dealer brochure' approach, I expected a more human approach. I was wrong.

That said, the racing might not be my cup of tea, but the in-race challenges and such are very nice indeed. It's just the very opposite of an arcade racer. Should make it a lot easier to deduce whether this will fit the bill.

I get that, but this doesn't have any more or less personality than, say, PGR 2. The menus are slick, the soundtrack is good (if you like that kind of thing), they have a coherent design and colour scheme throughout, the social stuff and the way it pops up is unique (ie the look of it all, as far as I know). It might be a bit sterile, but it's not completely devoid of its own identity.
