The Trouble with Nintendo. A TL;DR topic.

You really dislike Sony, don't you?

Yes, It's all gone downhill massively since the PS2. I'd go as far to say the commitment they make to genuinely new content is laughably shit and they have some of the worst lifeless 'franchises' going.

The PS3 was region free but for the first time in 20+ years I only imported one game due to the library on the system. Absolutely incredible for a 6-7 year period.

As for Bayonetta, it's weird given that Nintendo are specifically bringing the sequel exclusively to the Wii U?

well if it wasnt for nintendo the game wouldn't be getting a release at all. Odd choice though.

I would have thought a Nintendo IP platinum game would have been better.

Well I'm hoping someone somewhere goes "why don't we let Platinum do Starfox?"

Is it Japanese pride and their history which prevents Nintendo from partnering with another company? The SONY thing fell through and resulted in the PlayStation. But if they had a money rich partner they could possibly compete in the specs war.

I imagine there are all sorts of things preventing this. The Japanese business sector is rather different than the one in the west.

The same sort of arguments could be levelled at all machines, in a manner of speaking. In spite of Sony's almost destructive pride in the lead-up to and release of the PS3, they've made some genuinely interesting moves including the widely praised PSN+ option, and they've taken many more bold moves in trying to create new IPs this gen (including the widely aped Uncharted series), so I think you're fairly alone in the opinion of them being "laughably shit".

It could be argued that the imports were less necessary when there's way more content available for PAL regions, and on that note I doubt anyone needed to import much for the 360 either. Having to import is kind of shitty if you think about it.

which is why you'll be the last one on rllmuk playing that shit while everyone else buys the next gen stuff.

 this is one of the worst comments on video games I've ever seen, what does it matter if he's still playing it if he enjoys it? Isn't that what all games are about? I'm pretty sure emulators and retro games are well received on here.

I mean shit like nintendoland. Not the classic nintendo stuff .like OOT or SMW. You really class them in the same league?

I'm not classing them, it's not my place to. I haven't played it as much as NSMBU but it's a game, enjoyment's enjoyment right? Like it's not my business if someone just plays Call of Duty all year every year. I know he attracts ridicule but Scott's pretty consistent with his opinions on games and there is a difference between saying "Nintendo need to change their approach" and "lol stfu with Nintendoland".

And in Nintendo's defence, I'll say that it's good that games like Nintendo Land still get made, because it's different. It makes the market that bit bigger and forces other companies to look at filling that demand, no matter how small. To go back to the Valkyria Chronicles point, I was gutted the sequel didn't get a PS3 release and I'm relying on a fan translation to have a chance of playing the third. If companies like Nintendo and Sega just chase the same genres as Sony and Microsoft then our selection is poorer and that's not good for us.

It's odd that a company that made all sorts of ridiculous things like online play for the NES and a printer has become so conservative.

I'm not sure why people clamour so much for a "return" to Nintendo so much, though. They are how they choose to be, based on their experience and business decisions. They make greatly enjoyable games with caveats, like Sony and Microsoft. It just depends on whose caveats you're willing to put up with.

EDIT: The concept of farming out franchises, considering the last one was Metroid: Other M, might not be such a fruitful idea however.

Seeing 'nintendoland is shit' comments getting a pos explains all

Yes, it is. I dont want some diluted, local multiplayer bullshit. When I think (good) Nintendo, I think of epic, landmark titles like SMB3, SMW, OOT, Zelda 3, F zero X, proper class leading AMAZING games.

Sadly, angel, I don't think you're the target market for the software.

Essentially, all of my close friends are now lapsed gamers. For them, those landmark titles mean very little. In fact, I'm not sure they've ever owned a Nintendo console between them. But that same joy you clearly associate with the games you've mentioned was found, for them, within NintendoLand.

As an example of a certain type of gameplay and design, it is certainly Nintendo at the highest level.

I'm out

Your argument is unwinnable, waggle is shit, minigames are shit, 90% of games on nintendo systems are total utter shit now. The hey day was the snes kicking arse with games like SF2T.the N64 to a certain extent, ever since then theyve gone off on their own weird path. Wii was a fluke, waggle is dead, iOS is taking over handhelds.

5 years time they'll be handheld only...10 years..software only. Prepare the noose.

I don't think it makes a blind bit of positive difference if someone isn't Nintendo's "target market"; they haven't got the room to be picky at the moment.

I didn't mean target market in the sense that it's a game for children or a game for girls. I meant that it is predominantly a multiplayer focused game. I can imagine the thinking behind it, much like with Wii Sports, is that more people who playing it and enjoying it will result in more sales of the software and hardware.

As a result, angel desiring single-player, "epic" games would find it harder to see any worth and enjoy the multiplayer system seller.

You pay per wafer. 45nm is cheap as shit these days and those chips for Nintendo will be costing a pittance per unit.

Not quite. PowerPC was never die shrunk to 45nm. Nowhere close to it infact. Now because it's not a standard chip and it's not being that massively produced it's likely costing a fair bit. Nowheer near the CPU I'll give you that but it's still a bit high.

The CPU in the WiiU has some slightly odd bit's in it. For example one of the cores contains 2 megs of cache while the other two contain 512k a peice. This is a bit odd to say the least. Also remember that the CPU and the GPU sit on the same socket which is quite a new thing. The people at chipworks give a good indication of just how much it costs altogether.

In the OP's version of history this has already happened. They've flogged their IPs and opened and closed tens of studios for hundreds of millions of dollars.

I know that trolling is sort of your thing but I didn't say they should sell their IP anywhere. I used specific examples of IP they'd had other developers work on in the past that they still control today (F-Zero and Zelda in case you missed it) as an example of how they'd made it work in the past. I also said they should open some studios. I didn't say tens of studios. I didn't say they should open and close them either.

Mario is now as diluted and as marketable as Sonic.

I said they could produce 2 releases of a series on a console and people would be happy to buy them. Much like Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 on Wii or Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword on Wii.

Maybe companies get it wrong yet they try. And there's still some awesome game experiences out there.

Those plucky little sweethearts, they just bring a tear to your eye, don't they?

Don't complain that the browser is bad on the 3DS. Because that's absolutely so non consequential as to be ridiculous.

Don't put the browser in if the system can't do a good job of it, that's all I'm saying. If you're going to do something, use components that are up to the job.

You want core games, and new game studios doing new things, and complain about how the Internet functions on a hand held games console?

I want them to release the brilliant games that everyone is waiting for. As for internet functions of the console, yep, they're terrible. The shop takes forever to download stuff for example. I mentioned that earlier.

If you can afford new consoles and to play everything then you're doing pretty well.

Why is it only the spoilt who complain? Perhaps because they're spoilt.

Fucking hell.

We've got a whole generation gone by of amazing titles, and the future gen coming, along with SO MANY amazing free to play titles.

Embrace that. We're in a better state now than we've ever been for games.

Good for you. Good for you. Good for us!

I'm surprised we all are so critical of everyone. Microsoft do tbis. Sony do that. Nintendo do so and so.

Considering the size of the post I made I'm pretty pleased that the only way you managed to criticise it was by making things up and or by trying to make legitimate complaints seem petty. Actually, maybe they are petty. Fuck, you've got me now. Perhaps I should be thankful that those selfless companies that sometimes make the odd mistake let me use their products. Hmm.

You are a grade C troll. You're not even good at it! Go back to IGN or similar and practice. I think you could do ok, bit more work on a few snappy one liners and so on, you could be good at this. But only if you really put the work in, as is, you're not getting anywhere and fast. Come on buddy, you're better than this, aren't you?

;) ;) ;)
