Xbox 2 == Gc2

Maybe this is crazy but I reckon the Xbox 2 and the GC2 will be the same machine.

Both Nintendo & MS have gone with IBM for the next CPU

Both Nintendo & MS have gone with ATI for the next GPU

Strong rumours of no HD in XBOX 2.

Stronger rumours of no backward compatibility for XBOX 2.

MS set out to take Sony market share. They only took some of Nintendo's.

Nintendo know how to make a powerful machine profitably. MS don't.

MS know how to market a machine to the (older) gamers. Nintendo don't.

Nintendo have great content that needs a wider audience.

I reckon Nintendo and MS will release different looking machines that are compatible with the same software (& GC1\GBA games).

MS will release a LIVE2 pack which contains an 80gig HD.

Working together is the only chance these two have of knocking Sony off the top spot. Halo 3 & Mario 128/256 on the same machine.

The new machine will be the beginnings of a 'Standard' which will be made available for license to other manufacturers.

Crazy?

I can't see any reason Microsoft and Nintendo work together and share the profit in royalty in third party games.

Simple: Half of a massive pie is better than all of a little one.

They both only have a small slice of the current main console market. What's the worst that can happen? Their combined market share is about the same as this generation.

But i still think its a bad idea making two versions - one with a hard drive and one without. Just stick with one console.

Neither will have a HD.

Nintendo's model will be small and colourful. MS's will be larger and have more outputs (like optical sound etc.). You choose the one which suits you.

The HD will be packed in with LIVE 2 and can be added to MS's model and (possibly) Nintendo's too.

Also we could use Japanese companies to help out to beat Sony ie Toshiba, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc.

Interesting point, as the PS is virtually the only thing keeping Sony going at the moment. So if they were to lose the money coming in from that..... ;)

Are the partners of the Xbox 2 console set in stone? ATI refusing to sort out the backwards compatibility issues couldn't of gone down well with Microsoft.

It's Nvidia that won't play ball. They have been dropped. Backward compatibility went with them.

MS need a new start. Xbox has been a financial disaster. With Windows Revenues under threat they will be under pressure to pull out of the games business all together. Nintendo are also under pressure to drop the hardware side.

This joint venture will be a face saving move for both parties. And potentially be very lucrative.

Eventually there will be a console standard. Currently Sony have *almost* established one. But they are keeping it to themselves and collecting ALL the license money for each game.

Nintendo & MS have a good chance of competing if they work together. Their standard will probably be open to more partners too. They could offer (say) 30% of it to outside parties. Nice and fair, and it'll bring in some investment money. Game license fees will be divided up pro rata.

Developers will be able to choose either MS or Nintendo for concept\game approval. Each will keep their own standards and brand.

How can there be a standard when the very definition of a games console is changing all the time. Nintendo's Games machine only aproach is totally different from Microsofts or Sonys centre of the home thingies.

He means eventually there will be one platform (like a PC without the upgrading farting on).

.::: I've been tinking this for some time now. Ever since the rumoured 'take-over' of Nintendo failed, it seemd to be fitting. Both companies seem to have complementing target audiences and both have/had an interest in Rare. ;)

But seriously, I think it would work. It also struck me as odd why only MS and Sony were mentioned with the whole IBM processor thing, while Nintendo was tugging along as well (but that could be due to American reporting which calims Nintendo is dead).

It just feels... good.

The standard will be upgraded from time to time.

It wasn't possible (to have a standard) in the past because tech was moving so fast. But CPU\GPU technology is catching up with the TV set fast.

What I mean is. A consoles job is to generate a 640x480 (ish) image 60 times per second. The current gen of consoles can do that very well. The next gen will do it extremely well. TV isn't a fast moving target. The HDTV standard is only 720p (max res.) The next gen will be able to throw that sort of imagery around effortlessly. It will still be possible to make BETTER consoles but not noticably so.

It's like CD audio. It's been possible to make better audio for years but few people can tell the difference. Once consoles get 'good enough' we'll get a standard.

A successful standard will come from a consortium rather than one company alone. Like CD & DVD.

I understood his point, I was just trying to loosely get across that I really don't think that will ever happen(unsuccessfully obviously). Each to their own and all that though.

Asking for a uniform standard for the next gen is jumping the gun a bit I think. Who knows where gaming tastes will go, we may not even be playing your average console through a TV in a decades time.

The panasonic cube played DVD's without problems.

Nintendos GameCube doesn't though, and doesn't the CG use a (at least similar) DVD format on it's discs ?

Surely just the ability to read DVDs opens it up for potential piracy, making the propietary format worthless.
