Thought it was worth separating discussion of the upcoming TV show from The Avengers thread as it's now been given an official title and synopsis and more news/pictures/video should start trickling out over the coming weeks.

Quote

Joss Whedon (MARVELS THE AVENGERS, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) shows us not all heroes are super with MARVELS AGENTS OF SHIELD.

Fresh from his role in the summers box office smash, MARVELS THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization SHIELD. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that havent been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They'll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered SHIELD agents that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world.

Executive Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr.Horribles Sing-Along Blog), Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvels first live-action TV series, Marvels Agents of SHIELD.

A new piece of news that's just come out is that J. August Richards (Gunn from Angel) has also been cast in a 'secret' role. Let the speculation begin. My wild guess, maybe Luke Cage, that's a character that would allow them to add some superpowers to the mix but one who might not support a film in their own right.

The actor has said this about his return.

After people see the show, they’ll have some clue as to why I’m still there, still breathing. But I don’t think they’ll know everything…

It's a risky move bringing him back as it could undermine the emotional heart of The Avengers quite a bit if it's a cheap 'Ahah, turns out he missed all my major organs!' style return.

Slashfilm are reporting on how Coulson is back for the series, despite the small matter of being dead.

http://www.slashfilm.com/want-to-know-how-agent-coulson-comes-back-in-agents-of-s-h-i-e-l-d/

In the pilot, it’s revealed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the ultimate super spy, faked Agent Coulson’s death on purpose to motivate The Avengers. Some S.H.I.E.L.D. members were in on it (including, possibly, Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders) but The Avengers were not. Their security clearance wasn’t high enough. Coulson was forced to hold his breath as part of the ruse and that’s a point of contention among his colleagues After the fact, Fury moved him to a remote location until things died down, and then he was reinserted into duty at the time of the show.

At this moment, several things are unclear about this explanation. First, it’s unclear how Loki piercing him with the scepter didn’t kill him. Also, it’s unclear if Coulson’s return to S.H.I.E.L.D. will be a reveal in the rest of Phase Two or exactly why he was reinstated. What is clear is this plot point is part of a larger story, with more details to be revealed in the show itself. Things may change but, for now, this is the basic story Marvel is going with.

What do you think? Is that a satisfying, believable idea?

A lot will obviously depend on the execution, but on the face of it that sounds a bit lame to me.

It wouldn't surprise me if this a Coulson is a copy of the original one with his memories and then fed this story to make sense of his apparent death. And then a plot point of the series will be him figuring out he is not the original Coulson. Maybe.

I'm also surprised they didn't trail this in front of Iron Man 3.

Aye, it cheapens the whole thing a bit, doesn't it? Unless of coarse, there's something more to it.

I read an interview with Clark Gregg recently and even he was shaky about it, but apparently changed his mind, when told how they planned to bring him back.

Then again, actors talk more shite than enough and he's probably just glad of the work.

Bang on, the revolving door of death in comics is not something the films or TV series should be looking to emulate.

True. It'll be time to reboot before anyone needs resurrection anyway, so hopefully dead is dead in marvel movieverse.

It works out to be a really good idea for development reasons. The Avengers can't know that Coulson is alive. I can imagine a few scenes where everyone will be mentioning that Thor is in the next room, but they can't see him so they better keep out of his way ...and the show's cameras to be on the safe side.

Unsurprisingly this has been picked up for a series order.

Supposed to be a teaser airing Sunday night in the US.

Part of it's already been leaked, but Disney/ABC are having it taken down so quickly I haven't been able to see it, but it supposedly features grainy news style footage of the Hulk.
