High Noon

"I was told when I grew up I could be anything I wanted: a fireman, a policeman, a doctor - even President, it seemed. And for the first time in the history of mankind, something new, called an astronaut. But like so many kids brought up on a steady diet of Westerns, I always wanted to be the avenging cowboy hero - that lone voice in the wilderness, fighting corruption and evil wherever I found it, and standing for freedom, truth and justice. And in my heart of hearts I still track the remnants of that dream wherever I go, in my endless ride into the setting sun."

Simple question. I'm playing Wild Arms 3 at the moment and I got to thinking: Where in hell are all the cowboy games? I mean come on, the Western is one of the greatest genres in fiction and yet its contribution to gaming appears to be Mad Dog Mcree (shit) and Sunset Riders (shit but I like it).

I know Red Dead Revolver was canned ( ) but I still want to be a cowboy. I want to out draw some low down rattlesnake desperado in a run down saloon. I want Lonesome Dove or A Fistful of Dollars in digital form. Heck, I'd even settle for a third person license based on Rooster Cogburn.

It's a little sad I know. But still... I want to wear spurs and a six shooter God Dammit!

Sigh. Rant over.

I know what you mean. It's a hugely influential genre, popular in both the US and Japan (and to a lesser extent in Europe) but there are almost no games taking advantage of it. I'd love to play the Man With No Name in a Western shoot-out game, riding around the desert... The closest I've yet come is riding Epona around Hyrule field at sunset

There was Outcasts (?) on the PC years ago, but I never played that. Apparently Red Dead Revolver's still coming out though, having been picked up by Rockstar, so fingers crossed for that.

How's Wild Arms 3 BTW - I was quite tempted for 15 quid in Gamestation?

Wild Arms 3 is definitely worth £15. A little stat heavy perhaps (the instruction booklet's near impenatrable) but the character prologues work like tutorials and it's full of neat little touches. Ability to skip random battles? Horses? Cartoon intro everytime you boot up a save game? All present and correct. And the pseudo western theme* is great. I just love customising my guns at the Arms-smith.

And Red Dead's still coming out? Yay! It's probably going to be decidedly average but as long as it's not the worst game in the history of software I'll be buying it.

*By which I mean the mise en scene. Not only is the theme tune god-awful but I've had it stuck in my head for the past two days ("Suddenly... Everything is up to me!" shudder).

Wild Arms 3 is great. Standard RPGing of course, but the setting is fantastic ;)

Dead Man's Hand for XBOX in March

Why does that look so dark and dirty? Crapness.

Yeah. I have to admit my first thought was "Zombie cowboys? Ugh." Which is a bit rich since Wild Arms 3 is "Cowboys and monsters? Yay." but still...

Dino Crisis 4 should be based on Valley of the Gwanges and be cowboys vs dinosaurs. And not shit.
