Just started watching this and I'm up to episode 10 of the first series, I'm loving it so far, it can be properly grim but it has an amazing sense of humour and it makes everyone extremely likeable. I know Mickey is an absolute cunt but I can't help but love him, John Voight is superb.

I think this is now my favourite season so far having not enjoyed the beginning of it. In the latest episode when Finney asked Ray to sit down with him I was half expecting

him try and kiss him.

- there were three or four easy candidates for

going in the grave

- expertly crafted episode.

Not watched this week's ep (10) yet, but last week's and all of series 3 have just been fantastic:

  • All the stuff with the priest of the Paraclete
  • Terry vs the Aryan nation
  • The whole story with the Finneys, Varick's body and the NFL deal
  • Mickey becoming a pimp and his run in with the Armenian mafia (great to see Grace Zabriskie in something again too - such a scary face!)
  • The rehabilitation of Avi
  • And now the reintroduction of Hank (the best Hank since Schrader) Azaria.

It's just epically good.

The only flat spots for me are Bunchy's relationship with La Luchadora (really?), the daughter's thing with Cole Phelps (really?), and the continued presence of Abby the wicked witch of 'Barstin'. Ugh.

Three to go and despite the minor irritants it's easily the best thing on TV at the moment.

Yep, amazed this doesn't get more love on here. It is easily my favourite thing on TV at the moment. The episode with the grave was fantastically written. They clearly have no idea what to do with Ray's son though - I think all that he has done this season is fucked a mattress and hit someone with a baseball bat. I actually don't mind the daughter's storyline - she was such a key part of last season that it's good she is more low key this time. Grace Zabriskie is immense - loved her in Twin Peaks but don't recall her in much since. Katie Holmes has been a revelation.

That was pretty good, though it felt a bit disjointed and bitty trying to tie up all this season's stories.

Also, think I've been a bit spoiled by 'This is England''s barnstormer this week, as some of the high-emotion moments in this finale felt a bit forced. The confessional for one.

Still a great series of course, but not quite going out on the high I'd hoped for. Lovely 'Yellow brick road' closing image though.

Can't wait to see what Mickey does next :D

Wasn't let down  Easily the best parts of the episode - the Ray stuff was dull by comparison and so obvious.

It should be renamed "The continuing adventures of Micky Donovan"

Watached the 1st episode of season 4  and thought it's gone along the same lines as all the other series, was thinking of only giving it one or two more episodes.

Watched episode 2.

" Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in"

"You saggy bald motherfucker"

I read that as 'Saggy-balled Motherfucker'. Makes more sense, seeing as Mick has plenty of hair.

Also I loved that the Buffalo Bill alike casino owner in ep1 was played by Buffalo Bill (from Silence of the Lambs). I'm sure that was deliberate.

Otherwise, I'm finding it a shadow of previous series so far.

I realise I am pretty much talking to myself in here but episode 4 was amazing. In most episodes Ray doing karaoke would be the best part but he was upstaged by the "it ain't going to lick itself Mickey" line. I like the fact we are going to see Ray and Mickey work together as well.

Up to episode 10 now and a break for 2 weeks for some reason as the US are doing it. It's been a really up and down series so far , some episodes have been decent and others have been utterly  pointless. Episode 10 was decent enough.

get the feeling that

Spoiler

they're going to kill off Mickey

in the season finale  which will mean they'll need to broaden the scope of the series. A "fix of the week" with a broader over arc of a storyline might be good to go back to, haven't really been that invested in the 2 or 3 story lines  outside the main one  that they've got going on at the moment.

Really enjoyed the finale.

I have been convinced that they would kill off a major character before the end of the series and even during the penultimate scene where Abby and Ray were outside the boxing club, I thought someone was going to come and shoot Abby. Glad it ended on a happy note and hope that in season 5 they ramp down the threat a little and get back to Ray sorting out problems for actors etc.

Wonder if they will bring anyone back for S5. What happened to Katie Holmes character? Hope we get more Hank Azaria - he was brilliant in his few scenes this season.

Thought this was a really weak finale.

Spoiler

All tied up far too simply. Even easier than the Armenian shoot out last year. Defeat the Russian mob (even temporarily) by quickly capping 4 incompetent guys.

Great season on the whole though, but I took a while to care about the Hector/Marisol story.

Also share the love for Azaria - should have his own series.

I didn't like the Marisol character from her first scene and that never changed. Hector grew on me though and I liked the final scene between him and Ray. Bridget going off to NY seemed a little odd. I wasn't sure what we were meant to make of that.

It seemed like they did a Kim from 24. She, and her annoying brother are pretty redundant, so instead of being chased around a forest by cougars, she was chased around school by Detective Cole from L.A Noire, then shipped off to college.

I imagine she will be back in a few season's time as the new head of the FBI or something.
