They fucked around until they realised they knew fuck all, let the management do their job and put no money in. All they've done is expand the ground but it was financed rather than paid for by them so really all they've done is be absent.

 

So much of our success is down to Klopp, Edwards and rinsing Barcelona. FSG look good in comparison to Hicks and Gillett and the cowardly tenure of David Moores, who spent over a decade with the curtains drawn in his slippers watching Coco the Clown work small time shows.

 

No one is demanding oil club spending, just a little ambition and guts in squad building. John Henry is all PR, that's why you only see him when there's a cup final or when he's apologising.

 

The only reason I'm not completely over the moon that they're fucking off is they're gonna sell us to some more weapons who'll want to maximise the club's potential sustainably (read: wait for the next mug to come along and pay even more).

I think that's all fair enough, but my point is that no-one is going to find an owner that's willing to pour money in with no desire to see a return at some point that isn't using the club for other purposes. I get the impression that after a period where the club have been basically perfect on the pitch they've probably accepted the futility of it, seen their investment peak and fancy cashing out. I presume they didn't see the value in splashing out on the playing squad and sorting out what looks like a big upheaval for that reason. I dunno, the ownership is a funny thing now as the team and fans are just along for the ride. FSG's eventual stumble into the blueprint of using good recruitment and on-field success to fund the club is really about as good as it's likely to get I reckon.

It's a tricky one for sure. I think fan ownership would be the ideal model across the sport, but everyone would need to go at once or else it wouldn't work. It's especially difficult as the Premier League is basically a near closed shop Super League as it is and that's had knock-on effects across the whole of the finances in Europe. It's just a massive mess. I do fear the level of money required to run a football club is just beyond the realms of possibility for anyone other than hedge funds and nation states now. I feels like it all needs to go pop before that could happen, which I don't see happening.

 

Civic pride is a huge part of football, but it's all but lost at the top level now. I've accepted the Arsenal I grew up with doesn't really exist in the same way now and I've kind of given up hoping it could again. The location and history are just currency to be traded on. There's a level of football where it is still important but I appreciate that move is unpalatable for a lot of people. It is for me at the moment anyway.

I support it, conceptually, but then it feels like it'll happen right around the same time as we evolve into the kind of enlightened post-work civilization that Iain M Banks liked to write about.

community ownership won't happen without government legislation in my view because really you have to just force the clubs into a special kind of ownership, no one could realistically expect to pay these owners for the clubs and honestly the vast majority of them can fuck right off.

 

my other hot take is that i would ban academies and clubs would have to fund coaching at schools. youngest a player can be signed is 16 but they still have to finish school and all the coaching and facilities would be at school grounds for everyone to benefit from.

 

instead i'm just waiting for the arse to fall out of the game.

People have been waiting for this since Alf Common was made the first £1,000 player back in 1905.

Using the B team tonight is going to look even worse come the weekend when our first choice players are beaten by Southampton... 

 

Oxlade had a decent game but you'd expect him to based on his experience etc compared to the rest. 

 

Was impressed by Ramsay (even though he looks like a typical ned) and that Doak kid when he came on. 

 

Now time for the penalties 😬

Ben Doak looks sensationally confident for a 16 year-old. One of the few bright spots tonight.

 

Derby’s ‘keeper so far off his line for every penalty in the shoot out that he had a seat in the Kop.

Watched the Istanbul penalties again the other day and he was halfway back to Liverpool. Ridiculous how he didn’t get pulled back, but also LOL.
