We'll sign him for £35m. This is more of the same thing. They're holding out for £40m, we leak stories that we're prepared to buy someone else if we have to. They've got to balance the books in order to comply with FFP. They're just trying it on. Similarly VVD won't cost £75m. That's just them trying to extract the most that they can from the deal after all of the stuff about £44m + £8m leaked the day before yesterday.

That statement is utterly bizarre and makes no real sense if we were actually properly interested in him. I'm guessing there is more to this than meets the eye.  And as everyone above has said, I can't see us spending half our budget on one defender, he ain't THAT good!

He is that good... he'll end up at Barca or Madrid... that statement reads as "please don't give us a transfer ban we're sorry!!"

Surprised gerrard and carragher haven't been taping up our players like they did with the last few that left us for you...

:lol:he ain't £75m good!  Don't get me wrong I'd love to have him at the club (mainly because Lovren is shit) but I'd rather seek out a player half that price so we can buy in other areas.

And no, that statement doesn't say that at all because just saying sorry wouldn't be enough if something big has happened.

I was obviously wrong. Maybe they want to keep him for another season and then he'll get the big move @PopeSmokesDope reckons he is capable of.

They must have someone else as an option. I hoped this summer would be different but the public negotiation over Salah, now this Van Dijk crap. It's going to be exactly the same, ah well.

Errr it does if you're already banned from signing kids and have form....

Someone at your club will be getting fired for this... briefing the local press that you've spoken to a player and they want to join before asking for permission is frankly moronic!

Call me a cynic but I reckon this is just another angle. Van dijk will now kick off and our position is strengthened again.

Either that or we really did fuck it up on one of the rare occasions a highly sought after player chose us over Chelsea and City. <_<

It's certainly a bit bizarre because surely Chelsea and City must have talked to him as well...without consent.

It smells off to me. (Probably won't find out until he releases an autobiography in 10years time)

So basically we were briefing the media to try to bring the price down and it has backfired quite spectacularly. They've told us to apologise and end all interest and they'll drop it.

I see Van dijk deleted them on his twitter and then changed it back within an hour or so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're still conceding basically as many goals in a season now (well 42 last season, but 50 in Klopp's first) as under Rodgers when you went out to score for fun. Despite buying a keeper previously the second best in Bundesliga, despite spending upwards of £30m on Lovren who goes from shit to good depending on who he plays alongside and whatever else. Despite etc etc I don't have a point. And I think Sarah is really good, I don't know where he'll play or what he offers substantially more of than Markovic given Klopp must think he's so dense he can't be trusted enough simply to bring him back for the few Mane-less months when Liverpool just needed someone skilfull with pace.

'why are you in here, shouldn't you be complaining about your own team first?' I do !

The Mbappe stuff is winding me up as well, for years now it genuinely seems the names being offered up as expensive solutions are picked by children who've just turned on the telly, in the sense they're after the shiniest newest stand-out player and then the year after they're discarded with and everyone is after the next new thing.

The transfer window is a con and every season fans develop a collective amnesia, seemingly forgetting the last newest player who was meant to change things.

They talk about this a lot on Five Live, because they're obsessed with why we're so shit in Europe now (remember when 3 of the 4 semi final teams were English?) - you can basically tell who are the quality pundits based on their response. Our reactionary lot will always point to Spending Big in the transfer market, whereas the actual experts will just say that our issue is always throwing money at problems because we can. I think it was Andy Brassel who said Stoke has a bigger wage bill than Athletico Madrid !

Liverpool have gone pretty much the whole season -really looking like challenging for the title for few months too- without a recognised centre forward. In the face of every dullard on telly espousing their wisdom that You Need A 30 goal striker to win the league. Spurs have got that and least goals conceded though their total would have been enough in most of the previous seasons. No one is interested in another way to win games because it's easier to just say 'spend'.

I mean, if splurging £50m on a player actually changed things for a team it wouldn't gall so much. If you spend that on a defender, that should be right there a guaranteed  half as many goals conceded. I can't think of many big money signings making any real difference recently.

Sarah has to be Salah's new name now.

Oh man, I didn't see that .. I do hate iPhone autocorrect. I was using McDonald's wi fi and was in a rush because it was so late the place was emptying I expected to be thrown out before I could hit post thus losing it all.

Dominic Solanke scored another 2 in the U20's World Cup. Thats 9 in 12 for him with the U20's now. Obviously we've seen this before with younger people (Yesil) but he's looking like a good prospect.
