:D i know, i know, i know....

still, i've enjoyed this thread as a result.

after a fair bit of thought though, i reckon i might not actually get ninendo's next console when it comes out. i could always wait 18 months, buy it for half the price and then get given a lovely helicopter ride with shigsy for buying a half price game from cash converters.

Next time, import your Nintendo products.

Every time I buy a US GameCube game, I receive 7 "PoundPoints". After 4 games I have enough PoundPoints to trade in for any full-price game I fancy, plus enough left over to trade in down at my local for beer. PoundPoints can also be spent in any shop online or on the high street.

Also, every now and again the DVDBoxOffice and PlayAsia PoundPoints catalogues offer me exclusive games not available in UK highstreet. So far, I've traded my points in for a purple GB Player, Animal Crossing, Mr Driller Drill Land and the Hudson Family Collection.

Do you see?

Thing is of course, and Mike hit the nail on the head, Nintendo (and all big companies) don't reward consumers. They merely dangle carrots.

Sainsburies 'reward card' isn't a thankyou from them, its a way to get you to spend more money. Nintendo would be losing out if they gave you 'free stuff' now, there is nothing left for you to buy from them.

'dems the breaks.

No you wont. You'll be first in line sticking pound coins to a photo of Miyamoto. YOU KNOW IT!!!

Aren't they sending exactly the wrong message to people who bought GameCubes at launch, and buy first-party games as soon as they come out.

They may as well be saying "Hey, don't bother to buy our console when it comes out.......it'll cost less a year from now, we'll throw in a game or two, and if you wait before buying our games, we may even give you free stuff for that as well".

There is something left for us to buy from them - their next console, on its release day.

Like any launch buyer would be willing to wait 18 months for new product.

Saying you'll import next time though will probably see Mario and Luigi kicking your door down, and smashing your consoles and TV.

Well said, Animal Chin

P.s. , emjay2kay, I was already killed by Bowser Nemesis for thinking about fiddling a receipt to get a Zelda disk :D

I gave one copy to my cousin Kate and the other to a friend that just got a Gamecube and hadn't really heard of Zelda. So.. if anyone wants to pass me on an e-mail invoice or a html invoice I'll be very grateful!

#warp pipe noise#

Julia: What? Bowser?

Bowser: S.T.A.R.S.!!!!!!!!! ... catalogue..

#sound of fireball hurtling across a room..#

#sound of synthesized calipso music as Julia looks suprised, jumps up then falls through the solid floor#

I'm not so sure at least some of them wouldn't. And even if the lines of waiting people at the next Nintendo console's launch are as long as they were for the GC, it'll be despite NoE rather than because of them. They are improving - it would be unfair to deny them that - but I think their latest Zelda disc offer proves that they have a long way to go.

See I agree with the initial post but you're missing the point of this scheme (Though Clive has already pointed out quite well). As someone who worked in marketing I can assure you this has nothing to do with rewarding loyal consumers. It's all about selling the selected titles. The reason it wasn't done before Christmas is that people were buying things anyway, the motivation was "What should I get little Johnny?". But Christmas is over now and there is still stock to shift, so what to do? Dangle a carrot in front of the people who are yet to buy a game.

People who buy a product consistently at launch don't really need to be catered for other than a few token gestures. That's the whole point of marketing, to sell, why waste time marketing to someone who is buying anyway?

This seems like a chance for Nintendo to get new customers and in a way bring them into the fold with some back catalogue games. They have a very cynical approach I'm afraid.

Oh and as for your letter. As much as it pains me to say,we had the mailroom boys filter out stuff like that and only bring us something which was very out of the ordinary. Someone will read it, agree with you and then bin it I'm afraid. Still, the message will get across, in a way.

The BeNeLux wing of Nintendo had a kind of similar offer up BEFORE the Christmas period: buy any two of the newer titles and get the Zelda Collection for free. Too bad I only liked one of those games (F-Zero GX) and didn't bother to buy a second, but I'd liked Majora's Mask ... Fortunately I still got the N64 version.

.::: Actually it was two out of the following three: Mario kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Party 5 and 1080 Avalanche. F-Zero GX was excluded strangely enough. :/ Oh and It was all of Europe excluding the UK and such. Leading me to think this entire Zelda-disc thing is a kiss-and-make-up type of affair.

But who are we kidding here. They 'practically' did the same thing with the GBA SP last year didn't they? NoE will be NoE.

Maybe the E should stand for Evil.

The Zelda disk promotion shambles is seems to be a UK balls-up more than anything. I know several parts of Europe where the USA style buy two games get it free promotion was run, which is better for long standing Nintendo fans or any gamer wanting to play new games as soon as they come out.

On the letter I fell putting in the release dates as an issue today is a little off, as that has improved no end with 1080, Mario Kart, Wario World and a few others arriving in Europe before North America.

The no show of Animal Crossing is still very poor though, although you wonder if some Yank is writing a bitter letter to NOA about the lack of Doshin the Giant. :D

As for the Stars Catalogue it's a good idea that's been poorly implemented, but then NOE don't seem to have a clue on how to promote themselves or their products. I'm just suprised their hasn't been a mass staff clear out from that place, it's clear they either can't see they are upsetting their current userbase, or are employing the old "head in the sand" option.

Yeah, you're right. So I didn't like a single game out of the selection.

But you Britons shouldn't complain too much; I understand that Eternal Darkness is also part of deal. And I've seen that for as little as 12 quid lying around here in Holland. Majora's Mask is worth that alone, and you can always give your Eternal Darkness copy to a friend or relative if you already own a copy.

Of course it is. That doesn't mean he's missing the point. There is no reason why the scheme couldn't be modified slightly and everyone would be happy. The disks cost basically nothing to Nintendo. Imagine if they sent a free copy to anyone who had already registered those games? Or everyone with a cube?

Imagine if the stars items (especially the GBA player) were not unlimited? They might actually get some good will from the scheme. As it stands it just a mess which has backfired PR wise.

Top tip: (got this from some TV consumer show).

Address the letter to the MD of the company. Mark it 'personal' and put it in a pink envelope and spray a bit of perfume on it.

That way his secretary will be too scared to open it first and you have a very good chance of the big cheese actually reading it.

These guys are often shielded from this stuff so it will probably surprise him.

i didn't get it myself.

btw when i quoted the release dates that was referring to my overall ownership period for the gc, fair enough it has improved lately but i was merely citing it as one of the issues that has annoyed me during this time.

jpickford i may try out that tactic...

Yes, you're quite right, MDs are shielded from those things. The thing is, he'd pass it down to another department, who would probably ignore it.

Not everybody is as generous and good natured as you JP, some companies really don't care. As it is they have incurred minimal damage (Let's not kid ourselves, they've lost no significant customers over this) and have also sold some more stuff. They will probably use the disks for either another promotion or for star points.

Cmon, nintendo are being dicks over this Zelda disc. Any other company would give it away - for free. Look at Sega with Chu Chu Rocket and Christmas Nights. Hell they even gave away the first disc to Panzer Dragoon Saga on the official magazine. Sony too arn't shy of giving away discs either.

Well, I've bought loads of Nintendo games (along with the GC to play them on), and I can never be arsed to register the stars.

Looks like all I'm missing out on is frustration.

Why don't Nintendo just sell the disk for 9.99 or something? If they're that desperate for our money, sell us the b*astard thing and let's have done with it.
