Perfect Dark

It still effortlessly puts to shame 99% of today's FPSs. (And seeing as I only first played it recently, there's not a rose tint in sight in that statement).

Perfect controls, great weapons, imagination and flair all over the place. Shit story, mind you, and framerate issues, although I found these 'disappear' over time, once your eyes are used to them. ;)

Brilliant! ;)

The thing that impressed me most was the weapon balancing. Of course certain weapons were better than others, but each weapon had a 'counter'. You could use a slayer to safely take out a laptop gun from round a corner, use a K7 avenger to spot the dragon mines etc.

Yep, one of my favourtie games ever. The Multiplayer is perhaps the best example of it's kind yet implemented. Not only do you have some great locations and everything customisable right down to the music but it had bots and lots of them. No tonly that but you could give them orders in game situations to guard a hill or protect you and they were very good at it. They could also be bloody hard if you put thier difficulty up and were a lot of fun to play against if you had no friends around. I really don't think any game yet has managed to beat it and if Halo had had a multiplayer any where near the complexity of PD it would have been much better (not saying that I dislike Halo but quite often I play on my own so it's nice having little things like bots around).

The single player game is also awesome but I don't want to go on for pages about it those.

One thing I will mention is that this is how Rare make great game. They puts so many extras in that there is so much to do (much like why GTA games are so succesful). You have the firing range where you can beat the challenegs and get more weapons and then you have others rooms with gadjets and more challenges. then once you have beate the game you can gain ascess to more levels and more settings... the list go on for ever. This game really had so much time and attention put into it that it deserved to be far more succesful (SALES WISE) than it was.

Rare, if you are listen give up on remaking CBFD and make a re-make of PD for the Xbox. That would be the best thing ever.

Still the best king of the hill mode in a FPS ever.

This is true.

The villa level is fantastic as you take out the enemies from afar with the sniper rifle and they stagger backwards to their doom below.

Lots of vivid experiences from this game that all seem to be in the first half based in the real world before the crazy sci-fi bullshit comes into play.

Came out far far too late in the N64 life for this to happen. I mean for fuck sake the summer of 2000. The PS2 was only months away.

This game needed to be out by Christmas 98 or the first half of 99 for Nintendo to really capatlise on the success of Goldeneye. Who knows how many more N64's they would have sold after all 98/99 was the year the PSone went into overdrive.

It worked so much better than Halos. You guard a hill for 30 seconds clean (no enemies in the base or the timer stops, but doesnt reset) and then you gain a point. The hill then moves. First to 10 points wins. In Halo the hill just randomly moves every 20 seconds or so and you accumulate time even if you are just sharing the hill with an enemy.

Also, the hill is marked green, but changes to the colour of the team thats occupying it. So everyone can see at a glance who is winning, or if one of your teammates are in the hill (so as not to luzz grenades). In Halo the hill just has a yellow boundary, which in itself obscures your vision.

Also, the secondary modes on the guns allowed the defenders to set up defences. Laptop guns and dragon mines. While the attackers could use cloaking, K-7's and slayers to creak the defences.

Halo's kng of the hill is terrible in my opinion. If you started with PD it just seems so WRONG.

Because if this thread I'm going to have to hook up my N64 and then be bitterly disappointed as I can't take the low, low framerate :D

Isn't there some sort of patch on one of the N64 emulators that fixes certain problems with this when playing on a PC?

Perfect Dark is among my top 3 games. At the time the frame rate never bothered me (never noticed/thought about it). I've not played it for a couple of years so I'm not sure if it would effect it now. I clocked over a week in multiplayer and got a 3 ranking I think (maybe 2). The stats made every single MP encounter really matter for me. I'm yearning just thinking about it...

As a few have said a simple port to Xbox would do me, never mind PD0 (which is bound to be dissapointing). Whatever Rare do from now on though, they gave me Perfect Dark, so I'm grateful :D

The more I think about a release of PD on the XBox, the more it makes sense. Just imagine the updated graphics, the downloadable content, the multiplayer options, the.....

Me and my mate discuss it often.

Why don't they just stick GoldenEye and Perfect Dark on one disc and make it a Rare Classics thing? They wouldn't even have to update / change owt, but if they did it would be lovely.

He said yeah, they could do Banjo 1 & 2 aswell.

Come on Rare you swines!
