Genuinely surprised at how little I missed Bezza, Mel and Sue. Settled back into its old routine rather smoothly, I thought, ad breaks notwithstanding, and Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig are both very likeable replacements. Contestants seem like a decent bunch, too: Julia has a wonderfully expressive face, Flo's clearly a star, and I immediately warmed to Yan after her Peter Beardsley gag.

Thought it was all good. Didn't mind Noel's voice over work wh9ch I know what a complaint, thought he and Sandi worked well together and showed promise of warming up as the series goes on both between themselves and with the contestants. I love Prue's dry demenor and as Paul has thawed in recent series it's a nice counter balance and a slight role reversal between the two judges.

 

The BLT, watermelon and pancakes were amazing, I also really liked the ramen bowl and the solerium, shame that she didn't manage to get the top on it. 

 

I really want want a mini-roll right now

Close your eyes and Sandy T sounds quite like Mel.

 

The only thing that jolts a bit is the ads, but that is made up for by the singing 3 tier Dr Oetker cake (nazi connections notwithstanding)

That's my main gripe it actually. Fielding was reigned in a little too much, it'd be like having Guy Martin as host and banning him from saying "proper" whilst walking around with a mug of tea

I liked it more than the BBC. Mel and Sue annoyed me the last few series, becoming an innuendo spouting caricature by the end.

 

One thing that does my head in though is the viewing figures. Average about 10m on BBC, now down to 6.5. I did read last week that this was anticipated as the 'exposure of channel 4 isn't that of the BBC'.

 

I don't get how 3.5m people appear to be unwilling to deviate from watching BBC1 at a certain time each week and will watch what is put on regardless, or will not defect to Ch4. This is the biggest TV show in the UK of what, the last 5 or so years? How can people who apparently love the show not go 'it's moved to channel 4, I'll watch it there instead'.

 

I just cannot begin to get my head around this mentality.

Was more of the same really. Seen Prue on enough other shows to know how she would compare. Format was shot for shot identical which is understandable but a bit disappointing.

I agree, it really was more of just the same as it was on the BBC.

 

I know many people would be pleased by this, but personally after 8 series, the format is starting to get a little stale.

lots of people saying today about the format being the same and how ch4 have copied it well, its made by a 3rd party company who hawked it round for more money, I imagine all the behind scenes folks are the same as they were never BBC employees in the first place.

I'm fully aware I'm in the minority but I never really liked Mel and Sue or Mary Berry so couldn't stand this previously. Now they're gone I can enjoy it. So long as Noel doesn't get too "random".

Same here, they were wearing thin for me and all the hugging and almost (dare i say slightly fake) crying along with "Oh come here, come here, you were amazing dont cry please" etc etc at the end of every episode was vomit inducing at times.

Oh god, some of those show shoppers this week were so so bad. The Operation one and the Great Britian one Chris did looked like they'd been done by school children 

 

Stevens was once again fantastic though. He managed to get all those chess pieces and have a great looking board all done in time. Pretty outstsnding considering some of the others didnt manage to get half of what he had done. Star baker 2 weeks in a row too, I think he's going to have to really fuck up to get the boot.

 

Hope the scouse woman goes, not a fan of hers, she's well shit.

I'm guessing this has all been stired up by someone in the media who has an agenda, reporting that outrage has been caused when in fact no one actually gives a shit or see's much wrong with it... obviously it's dependent on the circumstances...  turning up to a mates fancy dress party as a nazi is unlikely to offend anyone in the slightest... turning up to a a fancy dress party in a jewish owned hall obviously is....

Anyway - Bake Off is back and brilliant as ever. Two episodes in and I don't miss Mel, Sue or Mary one bit.

I knew someone would roll that one out... a nazi uniform and clansman costume are complete different.. one is the military uniform used in roughly a 10 year period,a lot of people who wore them didn't have much choice m... if it was an SS uniform you'd have a point... the other is something idiots choose to wear... as far as I'm aware people arnt forced to wear them...

 

Ive seen plenty of re enactors wearing nazi uniforms but nO one complains about that...

Just caught up. Biscuits was pretty good, loved the chess set and liked both the snake and ladders, and drains and ladders, but the rest were pretty poor. Caramel was alright, not keen on the stuff but it all got pretty tense with the waffles. Bread week is always my favourite so loved that.

 

I much prefer savoury baking, both making and eating, to sweet and I do feel that each series seems to have less then the last with even bread week including enriched dough and pastry focusing on sweet, and also things like caramel or pudding week. I guess ratings or focus groups must suggest that sweet is more popular.

I'm surprised by how similar this feels, Fielding isn't irritating me at all and it's been pretty charming. My only problem is that they seem pretty inconsistent in their judging, like they're trying to be positive about some of them and looking for problems with others. Pru seems like a total dick as well. I'm glad the old scouse lady went, couldn't understand a word she was saying.
